I agree with your first point entirely but I think you're mistaken that people didn't realise Damon was behind Gorillaz; it was a big story when the band was born that Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewitt lived together, came up with the idea of a cartoon band and made it happen. I don't think it takes away from the success; in fact I think it enhances it, because in the late 90s we were tired of Britpop and Damon could have been seen as baggage.

I was sitting in the airport moving from New York due to things getting so bad post 2020, never thought of doing that let alone so soon, u gain a complex love relationship with the city & it's ppl for anyone who has lived there, I sat relatively numb to the whole situation in the airport.. until this song started playing in the loudspeaker, I love gorillaz soo much so there's that added to the situation, I sat there letting the tears roll down my face, i wanted to hide from the emotions & situation that just hit me so suddenly, didn't want anyone to notice so I didn't give in to whipping my face so ppl wouldn't look over at me, felt surreal sad yet positively beautiful, but after that day this song has a special little string in my heart

I was never into Gorillaz seven years ago. I was a college freshman, and it was only through the guy I fell infatuated with that I got into their music. That guy did a cover of this song and I still remember very vividly how I got so obsessed over this. Melancholy Hill will always be special to me, even if I'm no longer 'involved' with that guy. Listening to this still warms my heart.

Such a beautiful song. I remember in the late 1990s I was at school, and I read an article in the NME that said that Damon Alburn was thinking about moving into electronica. I told my friends and they just couldn’t conceive it, because back then it was totally inconceivable for indie/guitar musicians to play electronic music. Then Radiohead released Kid A, then a year later the first Gorillaz album followed - and then suddenly the crossover was mainstream
