Watching Ray fight with the open end wrench in the tight spaces is a little painful. Been there often. It makes me crazy doing a 1/6 turn, flip the wrench, 1/6 turn, flip the wrench, and repeat for 60 minutes.

Alden wrench makes standard and metric sets of ratcheting open end wrenches made of high grade stainless steel! Use them all the time !

Or even a 1/12 turn. Sometimes a brake-union spanner comes in handy; (like a ring-spanner with a slot cut in it.)

Header flanges are never truly flat, always run them on a table sander to knock down the high spots and make them true. And always tighten from center out in a pattern for even placement.

I always wanted Headers for a couple of my old Hot Rods that were actually my Dailies. Between Ray, Jeff Bradshaw and the machine shop I follow on here I'm kinda glad I didn't. They have given me more than one "Duh" moment such as squaring up the flange with a belt sander. An exhaust leak annoys the p-hockey out of me. I have a small one now on my Trailblazer with the 4.2 but you can really only hear it when you pass a guardrail or something solid on the right side of the road.

We used to use brass nuts on the exhaust manifold flange and we put a couple extra ones on just a cover-up the threads makes it a lot easier to get them off later

My question is about that Left Side Header, it looks like the return line from the heater, is right up against the #8 Exhaust line, and to me it ;ooks like it;ll be back for some serious water line replacement.....

Not all vehicles are a pain in the ass. I have short tube headers from Banks on my 08 Silverado 1500 and the most trouble I had was a bolt I had to superheat on the original connecting bolt at the flange to the cat on the driver side. The shorty headers with polished and ported heads, high flow intake and a custom tune from EFI live has made a nice difference.

If it’s a 2uz, do it!! I’m planning on putting headers on my 96 Lexus with a 1uz the big (little) brother to the 2uz,3uz,3ur. They sound great but are a pain to get in

That customer should have supplied locking header bolts. Once they are tightened, they won't back off. Love watching your videos.

This was an excellent job, Ray. A little known finishing touch for stainless headers/collectors- After installation, spray & wipe with acetone (not BPC) then a liberal spray of WD-40 without wiping. After a few heat & WD-40 cycles- they will develop that beautiful rainbow, that also protects.

I opted for JBA ceramic coated for my 04 ram 1500. I dispensed with the kit gaskets and bolts and used oem gaskets and 4.6-5.4L Ford stainless steel stud and flange nut set. The flange nuts are serrated, one time use. The serrations keep the nuts from loosening. I did use aluminum anti seize on the studs. I may have used one 40mm steel stud and one 10mm copper nut in the hole very close to one of the runners, I can't remember. It's been 4 years, no problems.

I put a sliver of sidewall rubber from an old tire in my U-joint adapter. It helps keep the floppiness to a minimum so I can get it on those hard to reach nuts.

Hi Jay, Normally with the BBK headers you have for the driver's side a short bolt and a long bolt : small for the bottom side and long for the top side. If you don't be careful with that you can't screw the bottom bolt enough to make a good seal (you'll be stopped by the header tube).😁 It happened to me just like you.

Two temporary studs upon which to pre-position the gasket, heat shield and the header would make this an easier job. Love your vids.

Only if there is enough room to position the header over the stud before sliding it on. Your loosing a couple inches of space

Ray , watching you use wire on that heat wrap reminded me of my days as an Air Force jet engine mechanic in the early 80's . Every bolt on the engine had predrilled holes in the head and the bolts were wired to each other in a tightening direction . The wire had to be tight but if you overtighten then it breaks and you have to start over .

As a long time header user, I have found the gray muffler sealer extends life of gaskets tremendously, also, a heat cycle and retighten is mandatory. I also cut flanges between tubes with hack saw to get them to not warp so badly.

@@tonyincs yes to all your questions. A company named appliance headers back in the 70s had 3/8 thick flanges and separate for each tube or group of tubes. I never had them leak

Once you know something works, it is a whole lot easier to just do it up front. Rather than spend another whole day getting that damn headers out and back in again to try to fix a problem you knew was going to arise every time. On my 454’s, even with the best technique, if I get 6 months of hard towing duty between having to change gaskets I feel like I have won.

I think one issue is that Ray does not own these parts and has been hired to install them, not modify them. It happens that sometimes modification is necessary to fit such parts, but if the part fits without modification we can expect that is how it will be done. In any event it seems like a nightmare.

I remember putting BBK shorty headers on my 1987 F-150 back in 2003. It was very easy and straight forward with no leaks or rerouting other components. I'm glad I didn't have the headache involved with putting them on a Dodge PU.

I channeled Rainman Ray last night and discovered that the lower plastic agitator on my 2013 washing machine had stripped out splines, where it mates to the steel splined drive sticking out of the basin. The safety-mandated lid lock system makes diagnosis much more difficult, one has to unscrew the latch and duct-tape it in place to run with lid up to actually see what's happening and not happening. New lower agitator on the way....parts house had 16 in stock, so this does happen to others....

Same thing happened on our washer except it was from the late 90s. Finding that part and attempting tear down and install would have been 1/3 the price of a brand new washer. Ended up replacing with a Samsung, was shocked to see it’s assembled in USA

That also depends on how corrosive the laundry detergent that you use, also is. I ripped apart my whirlpool, because the transmission splines were rounded off due to rust eating, weakening, and breaking off the splines, until the machine just wouldn’t turn. The machine was in a million pieces for a few months, until my neighbor, tossed out his old Whirlpool model (compatible chassis and parts) in their front yard. Very similar to mine. I ended up hand trucking the neighbor’s reject to the house, and fixed it with the parts from my busted up Whirlpool, and made another good washer.

This brought back memories of one of my first car repairs, I was about 13, the exhaust manifold on our 69 Ford F250 had cracked, my dad and I replaced it. I thought I was pretty big stuff getting to turn wrenches on a real repair!

Years ago the inner fenders were metal and when the headers wouldn’t fit you just take the hammer put a concave dent in in it . Everything you needed was always in the JC Whitney catalog except for the right headers

Should be fun going forward.....header bolts tend to back off at first. I used locking header bolts when I had my Camaro.

I want to "Thank You!" for teachin me about these sensors on the newer atuomobiles. I had a code po172 come up on my 2011 Chevy Impala. The auto parts store took me that it was a mass air sensor but I know it's not right because it's running rich on bank 1. It's goin to the garage Monday mornin to have it scanned again and repaired. Hace a awesome sunshine state of a day! We're watch y'all all the time.

Let us see how this works out after a few weeks of install. Those shorty kits are usually more of a pain in the ass with very minimal if any gains at all.

Love your videos as it is one of the first things I do in the morning looking at your channel first for new ones. Don't worry about being long or multi-part. Never too much for me. I find that I have mimicked a couple of things you do. When running nuts/bolts on I start the power tool before engaging and I say "click" to myself in my head or out lout when tight. LOL

This is the reason I prefer OEM parts instead of aftermarket. Sometimes simple bolt on installations is not that simple. OEM stuff you just know it's going to work when time is of the essence.

Pro tip - a lil dab of JB Weld on the 4 corners of the gasket will hold the gasket in place, allowing you to locate the bolt holes on the headers. Aquarium silicone works in a pinch also. Lastly I should mention that I’m a investment banker at my day job.

Duke, when I have to hold a gasket in place I like to use Elmers rubber cement. You can put it on both surfaces and let it dry and it will stick or just put it on one surface and hold it there for a couple seconds and it will stay, also cleanup is simple, just rub any excess and it balls up and is gone. I use it on my riding mower’s decals, when I power wash it the decals will sometimes come off and I use the rubber cement to put them back on. Works good!

Ray, I hope you were paid for the actual time it took you to do the job! If I were the customer, I'd have also thrown in a case of your favorite bottled brew after doing that job for me! I just recently went through job on a cracked rear manifold replacement on a old 3.0 V6 Camry, so I was feeling some of your pain as on top of the struggles I also live in the rust belt!

Welcome to my world! I have a 2014 Ram 2500 5.7 hemi that like ALL of them had an exhaust manifold leak and broken bolts on the right side first... now the left side is starting to make noise! I wish I had a machine shop nearby that could resurface the cast iron manifold and solve the problem forever! Those shorty headers are a waste of $$ in my opinion.

I would have been screaming at the truck for having something mundane like that break at 50k miles. That would have really chapped my ass. It's not like it's the 70's anymore where that was just expected. Especially since it looks like this fella takes pretty good care of his truck. But...Chrysler...you know...they saved 17 cents per truck by going cheap on the manifold bolts.

Kind of brings me back to the first time I replaced broken exhaust manifolds/ cat converters with siezed and broken studs in the heads of an early ford escape 3.0l. Ahh.. the memories!

They sell heat shielding with a fiber glass with external foil insulation sleeving in rolls that you could slide over the heater hoses after disconnecting one end on each hose. Plus they sell heater hose by the foot at the part store if you wanted to totally run the hose away from the exhaust.

With headers I believe you have to drive it to fully heat saturate the heads and headers, then retighten the bolts.

After ten to twenty heat cycles the customer needs to check the torque on those header bolts.

wouldnt have been easier to cut that long bolt down instead of a spacer it would have also given more room for the socket ps great job

If I paid someone to install my headers and saw that nut on a bolt mess I would ask for a discount on the labor. That is OK on your personal car but never should be done to a customer's vehicle.

Should have either cut the bolt to size or gotten another bolt of the correct length. If I had paid to have headers like this installed, I would not be happy with a nut as a spacer, where a spacer should not be.

No, that was not the problem.. Listen: 35:04 The shank is the smooth part of the bolt that has no threads. In other words, he did it because he ran out of threads to properly seal the leak. Cutting the bolt shorter would have solved nothing,

Years ago I bought a set of ARP locking header bolts. Had a retainer clip that rides on side of header so can’t unscrew. Great idea part

agreed..l put them on my 2018 GMC Sierra 6.2l shorty headers and have not had to re-torque them in over 3 years.

Long tube headers add torque. Not sure about shorties.

I spend a lot of hours watching YOU work. Time we'll spent! I so miss doing auto's. Now I diagnose and repair mill amachines and equipment. Shorten the bolt leaves the job clean, no nut spacer. Or maybe use a SS nut.

The flange bolts were getting hard to turn because of the heat from the running engine. Remember! All exhaust work cool and lubricated!

As the owner of a '14 Ram with a hemi I've thought about replacing my stock manifolds with headers when and if the studs break. That ain't happening after watching you struggle! Stock manifolds forever! Thanks for sharing your misery so the rest of us can make life-improving decisions.

"And if"... haha, you were fine with just "when", it will happen. Don't be afraid of the headers, this was a fairly trouble free install. If it doesn't develop a leak in the next few years, it's a win. That driver's side leak issue is just as likely with the stock manifold replacement. If you do get the broken studs on stock manifolds, replace the gaskets, bolts/studs, and have the manifolds decked/planed. Don't use new manifolds or you'll rinse and repeat.

You need some safety wire pliers and safety wire comes in handy- i actually safetied an oil pick up on my 454 engine if you don't have a welder it worked!

I enjoy watching your videos, they're very entertaining. I enjoy watching a lot of these shade tree, backyard and independent mechanics.. I've actually picked up a few small things here and there. Even though technology has increased a lot and the automotive field has gotten a lot more complex you can still learn from these back yard or farm type mechanics.. they know how to make things work

Excellent job Ray: The last time I installed exhaust headers it was a real bear. In my shop any custom work is performed on an hourly basis with no exceptions. I pray you didn't quote that job at 2hrs labor. TMP from N.J.

Back in the day I would install the headers for my buddy's 1969 Ford Cobra with a 428 Cobra Jet engine. It would be an all-day job to get the bolts and or allen head bolts in and tight around the boxed in shock towers and get them tightened up. He often pulled the engine to make changes and would always have me do it because he did not have the patience to do it. I even bought a finishing tap to make sure the threads in the block were clean and could be finger tightened as much as possible. Fun times.

You got lucky with removing those bolts. Mine broke off in the head enough where my mechanic had to remove the head. It’s such a tight area to work because they mounted the motor so low and far back behind the front axle between the frame rail. Good for weight distribution/center of gravity but not for working on it. We cut the dipstick tube and added a piece to make it longer to clear everything. The add and full line on the dipstick are in a different spot now 😂. We zip tied the two coolant lines to the ignition coil packs so they wouldn’t get burned. Sorta wish I went with long tube headers on mine instead of the shorties. It gained torque/hp, but nothing crazy. It’s a truck not a challenger scatpack so I didn’t want to throw a lot of money at it.

Oh and lol. I have a 2005 magnum hemi. I put l.t in mine lol. Stud kits are a must and also s.s. We had to remove the engine mounts , transmission mounts and lift the engine a bit . ... For the d.s.t we welded 3 nuts together. Tighten down thethe header then run a short bolt through the dst .

@@standhd Maybe not even that especially if he didn't upgrade the downstream part of the exhaust system and do a tune on the computer. The other problem is that quite often with headers and exhausts both on cars and bikes is that what power gain there is is in an RPM range that you will almost never used on the street. Friend of mine in Dallas does dyno tuning and he said that all too often people want headers installed but don't want to do a full tune and then come to find that their 800 to a $1500 parts and labor header system gaveless than 5 horsepower. It was always amazing to me the folks that would go through the effort to do the hardware but not the software.Back in the olden days everyone knew that header work also included carburetor work :) He would advise them to do the whole job but if they chose not to he was a great believer in it was their money and they could spend it however they wanted.

Generally speak this kind of engine mod is a waste of time/money. Yes, they look interesting when you open the hood, but the cons outweigh the pros by a long shot.

You gain a little bit of horse power and toque plus it sounds nicer than stock...you might spend your money on beer and cigarettes and other like doing this stuff....not your place to criticize what other do with their money.....and others won't criticize what you do....

@@KingSobieski those where a manifold not a header...a good header has individual tubes that are of equal length that are welded into a collector. A manifold just has a tube running down to each cylinder that has a mount for each exhaust port.... There are some cars like corvettes that had stock headers and were sought after by car enthusiast because of the performance and looks

This takes me back to when I had my 2010 Dogde Avenger. A peice of crap to work on, but drove like a Cadillac after, lol. The smallest problems always stalled my progress, like having to remove the whole knuckle for a ball joint replacement, because the press tool was a mm too big. Big fan dude, it's good watching a pro do it and not have grease up his nose after.

Come on Ray- cut 1/4" off the end of the bolt. Also that heater hose clamp could have been reversed to lift up the hoses.
