I’m 50 years old and been practicing windmills for about a week now. Just the other day something finally clicked and all of the disparate movements finally came together and made sense - I can’t wait to go practice some more today and eventually land this move. Today I’m going to start learning flares. What got me suddenly interested in breakdancing was the fact that it’s no secret on the mats that people who have a background in breakdancing do EXCEPTIONALLY well when they transition into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ...and now I 100% see why! Everything from movement to positional awareness to strength is instantly translated into Jiu-Jitsu skill, for what it’s worth, just sayin’

The step-by-step approach was nice. I wasn't overwhelmed. He layed out a simple form that was easy to learn and follow, then added more to it until it became the full move. I feel like a lot of dance moves would be easier to learn this way.

Thank you. You're the best, I will give it a try. I've been failing to get it using the most common method of learning for a long time, it hurts cause I go all out to try and at least get one. I think one major problem for me is I really have to know what the rotation should feel like to get the proper momentum going, second it lets my hands learn proper placement and timing by actually getting a few rounds in, thirdly I can practice as many times as I like without my muscles getting tired or risk injury. I'll let you know if I ever get it!

SuperbLotus Good try bro!! I see your problem is that you should swing your hip to the front & try not to get flare so high at the front but make it high at the back. If you watch closely, your hip did not swing to the front,your kicking leg is swinging to the front & it is correct but your hip should go to the front as well. Hope it helps.

I've tried to learn a Flare for 2 months, my teacher was already getting pissed because I just couldn't get it done. This is a complete different approach, I really want to try it to see if it works better for me! Unfortunately, I don't have such a big room to practice it, I can only practice at the beach (therefore I also can't practice a windmill, which I'm also too stupid for) but for the first steps I need some kind of good floor. Anyone has any idea what I could do? Haha
@PieChienTeddie9 жыл бұрын
I think you can basically do it on any floor as long it is hard. I won't recommend you to do it on the beach though because learning flare on top of the sand was not a really good idea.

Hi folks I'm probably the most unusual 55 year old around town, I have very fit body and perform as a part time pro dancer and stripper, I look 10 years younger than my age however. Ive been trying to catch the flares for years unsuccessfully until a few days ago. The mistake I was making that is hardly mentioned is; I used to swing my hips too low and short, I stopped @ 5 to 4 o clock but once I filmed myself I saw the error. Now I complete my swing @ 2 -1 o'clock and I swing higher with more power completing 3 rounds easily. I still need to clean it up but I can now go around. So anyone learning the flares take note of where your hips completes the swing, remember 2-1 o clock or 10 -11 o'clock
