imagine basing methods on what a study using random non related wolves thrown in to a random setting resulted in. its like doing a study of human behavior in a prison yard and then saying "yup this is humanity". what wild wolf packs display isnt dominance at all they are just teaching and reminding members of the pack what the rules are or in a pups case its just good parenting. also you are right they do not migrate but will follow or trail a herd (that IS migrating) for miles until the pack decides what to do next. also imagine how things like a dominance role and alpha this and that looks to a dog coming from a human. its like trying to talk about the policies of a country while not knowing how that country operates or even the language and culture to someone who was born and raised there. if things can get lost in translation when two people of different languages and cultures speak to eachother then surely the same can happen when a human is trying to communicate what they want to a dog using dominance based methods right?

literally was commenting on a video about how harness actually don't increase pulling & that i walk my husky mix on one & got told i was wrong about harnesses & that kiba being a husky mix means nothing. like, our walks mostly has kiba in front of me, the leash is loose & he is aware of what i'm doing so if i stop, he stops. it's incredible how easy dog training is with treats but so many people are dismissive of it. i really like how you include video examples of the right way to do things.

Thank you so much for being you and doing what you are doing. I'm 63 years old and am horrified by this internet/you tube 'dog training' world that seems to have exploded in the last decade. It seems that things have regressed. I thought we were turning a corner with more understanding of animal behavior (real - aka domesticated dogs are not wolves, etc.) and particularly canine psychology, communication; and the dog - human relationship. I thought people realized that what makes for a good TV show is not good dog training; nor even good information. (Cesar may have a few things right, but a lot more wrong). But, I'm horrified to see all these big sites with 100s of thousands of subscribers and positive comments, with click baity titles offering quick fixes. And videos of dogs appearing to be 'well behaved' or 'well trained' , that you can see are nervous wrecks; and no learning or behavior change has taken place. Suddenly I see prong collars on dogs all over my neighborhood !! And Tay, I am talking about a gentle old yellow lab, a cockapoo! , and an English Mastiff who is the most gentle big giant I've ever met. I feel like things are going backwards. Seems like a combination of our society wanting quick fixes, lack of critical thinking. and then unscrupulous 'trainers' seeing an opportunity to make a lot of money off of the former. Anyone can call themselves a 'dog trainer' unfortunately, and the public is swayed by dubious qualifications and/or professional looking websites. I don't have any fancy certification, I am self taught. A scientist by training, I had the great luck to study with a wonderful canine behaviorist, and then learn from my own experience as well as many others who use philosophies like yours. I'm retired, I do not call myself a 'trainer', but I have informally fallen into this role for some of these neighborhood dogs. I'm currently working with the cockapoo and his owner .. because you will not be shocked to learn, this sweet little dog is now fearful of dogs he doesn't know because for 2 years, his owner has been jerking on a prong collar when he barked with puppy excitement at a dog he didn't know. I'm interested in learning more about you and how you work; but I don't think I can watch any more of these ' reaction' videos , because I get so upset..BUT - I think it's great you are doing them, because it will help educate others who might not yet understand . A long YT comment I know, but thanks for listening!

Thank you for sharing, I really appreciate your kind words and support! I wish you the best of luck with your cockapoo client, poor little thing. You can do the great work of spreading awareness in your own neighborhood. The more we share appropriate information and humane methods the better! Keep up the good work ❤️

Could you explain how dogs are not pack animals? I thought dogs were pack animals, but dominance theory got the pack structure wrong. I've heard the pack structure of a dog is closer to that of a family versus a hierarchy.

I have a couple of videos on my channel explaining pack theory, if you search the word pack theory on my main page, it should pop up!

Saw an ad for Garrett Wing's free dog training course. Thought about taking it but wanted to talk to you first. Is it positive reinforcement or are they going to have me punish my dog?? Just want your opinion.
@K9TayАй бұрын
I have a playlist on American Standard Dog Training, which is Garrett's company. I recommend you watch those videos to decide for yourself. I will say he does NOT use positive reinforcement, and will aggressively correct your dog. But you can see for yourself.

@@K9Tay Thanks. I looked at the playlist and decided I'm not going to go for it. Susan Garrett's course was SO much better.

If you leave dogs to breed however they want, unchecked and unsupervised, they end up as...dogs. Dogs are not wolves. There are wild proto-dogs today, dingos (which likely came from East Asian dogs), and the Canaan Dog. Canaan dogs are probably the closest living model for prehistoric dogs. They are still not sure if all dogs came from the same wolf-like ancestor, or if convergent evolution was going on globally alongside humans.

my dog is a pure mutt (basenji, yorkie, shih-tsu, and mini poodle) and my god his prey drive could rival that of a game bred terrier on most days. he would go right to the beach nearby just to dig up crab holes if i let him.
@K9TayАй бұрын
Awww sounds like a good time for your little pup!! Good luck with that prey drive, I could never handle that 😅🐺

Thank you, lol . i'm not sure how or why the public seems to be bamboozled by this completely illogical idea - the whole wolf thing! A dog is a completely different species !! That is just basic science. And , if you want to go the evolution thing, the dog diverged as a species 10,000 or more years ago (it doesn't matter exactly.. a long time is the point).. AND of course, what makes the dog UNIQUE, unlike any other animal, is that it co-evolved in an interdependent relationship with humans. Where they came from may be of academic interest, but it doesn't matter for the current dog-owner relationship. You have a dog, and a human. Or dogs.. and humans . Now is what matters :)
