I think it's a great video but I find it unsettling, like that there would be a team that chose these bizarre colors and put on this uncomfortable performance (and that the audience would find it eerily enticing). It all feels discomforting and evocative of some "other place". It's really great though.

Yeah it’s really a trip something like this isn’t more widely recognized, it’s a master class in the cohesiveness that a music video can achieve when given enough attn and time. It’s kind of a lost art really, and if you consider the amount of years music videos have been a normal thing, it wasn’t really that long. So something this great should encapsulate a brief moment in a very brief story called humanity, but to so many, it was kind of swept under the rug bc it was already kind of too late at that point. Eric wareheim(spelling) is a genius though, and Beach house is great as well. If i sound a bit over the top, just think on what I said….. in relation to time, our lives are just a small snippet of a larger story, a larger story, that is just a small snippet of another much much larger story. Maybe I didn’t word it correctly, sorry I randomly came across this video this morning and nostalgia has got me thinking too much. Apologies.

I’ve gone through multiple phases of binge-/repeat-watching this video, probably several hundreds of times in total. Still, every time I watch it, it transfixes me-I get chills. This is high art dressed up as low art/kitsch. There are several very powerful thematic undercurrents that it taps into, as well as some more overt thematic material and symbolism that make this video positively brimming with semantic content. It is a feast for the subconscious. Artistically, both in terms of format and style, it manages to perfectly capture the ineffable and ephemeral yet infinitely rich and timeless character of a dream, better than I think I’ve ever seen it done before. This is _exactly_ what dreams are made of and how they feel (at least my dreams). For various reasons, it does all this in the vernacular of American Friday night high school football and its halftime shows. There is something very democratic about this-this is the mixed dreams and memories of millions of people, archetypes of male/female, the timeless battle of the sexes and all the savage vagaries of youth and love, all the high drama and the all mundane pettiness, this video captures it all. Now when will AI be able to replace Ray Wise with RFK Jr (it doesn’t have to do much), and edit in a bunch of anti-vax protest and various conspiracy theory signs in the crowd? Everything else in the video can be kept the same, and it would be a perfect mirror of our current times.

Aissa Tyley but what is the video trying to get across? is it trying to portray how us and audience crave entertainment or is it genuinely showing the content Of The video actually being entertaining?
@flimmyperu8 жыл бұрын
+dalmaximus I think it has a lot to do with sexuality, and fighting for affection. However what gets me is the energy and raw spirit of the young athletes, like nothing can stop them. The whole video really overwhelms me. Yes I do feel it has a lot to do with our insatiable appetite for entertainment, like a constant drug, and the more we see, the more it takes to impress us.

Aissa Tyley yeah it's a strange one to work out. some Of The talent is awesome yet I still wonder what the message is. when that dude does the forward flip at the end that is crazy. but my fave part is the girl in the sheet. as a vegan who recognises the murder that happens daily humans can really produce some beautiful Shit.
@zoned76096 жыл бұрын
The song itself is about the rarity of true love, I think. "Once in your life - it happens once, rarely twice" Maybe this is just about people peaking. In relationships, in high school, in life. The song is about a romantic peak but this is about every kind of person's plateau all at once, but not exactly despairing of it being the high point but rather celebrating it. I dunno, I could just be high.

This song and video are stunningly beautiful. Ray Wise is perfect - and the way the whole thing just 'is' - its obvious a LOT of planning and thought went into this, but its not at all heavy-handed in its delivery. I've always thought this could be some dream an older man had about what he wishes his high school life had been like. In reality, he wasn't the jock, he wasn't the popular guy, so he didn't know much about those things. If you'd told him that sports involved pink and yellow leotards and hoops connected to them, he'd believe you. Cheer leaders were just promiscuous individuals he could never be around. But here, in this ideal universe, he's the center of everyone's praise and joy. He's gaining what he always craved, which was appreciation; appreciation like the jocks received. I might be way off, but I dunno.

The impression I got of the song's lyrics was that each one of us represents what someone somewhere has wished to find, in a loving relationship that is. There's a randomness to finding the other, "wishes on a wheel." The video perfectly encapsulates that in that an arena of individuals are treated to a celebration of what they are, a wish someone made. It's lavish and dreamlike, daring and dangerous, nonsensical and gaudy. It's beautiful. I'm especially moved by the phrase, "One in your life, it happens once, rarely twice." Masterfully written song. The root, to the relative minor, to that painfully gorgeous minor 3rd. Perfect.

This is probably the best work we'll ever see from Eric Wareheim; this is his apex. Aside of that one episode of Tim & Eric (the Jim & Derrick one) this is probably the most nuanced work he's done so far- quixotic enthropy, somber and still- among the freakishly mundane and overweight americana that only a artsy kid trapped growing up in middle america can understand. Well done!
