I’ve gone through multiple phases of binge-/repeat-watching this video, probably several hundreds of times in total. Still, every time I watch it, it transfixes me-I get chills. This is high art dressed up as low art/kitsch. There are several very powerful thematic undercurrents that it taps into, as well as some more overt thematic material and symbolism that make this video positively brimming with semantic content. It is a feast for the subconscious. Artistically, both in terms of format and style, it manages to perfectly capture the ineffable and ephemeral yet infinitely rich and timeless character of a dream, better than I think I’ve ever seen it done before. This is _exactly_ what dreams are made of and how they feel (at least my dreams). For various reasons, it does all this in the vernacular of American Friday night high school football and its halftime shows. There is something very democratic about this-this is the mixed dreams and memories of millions of people, archetypes of male/female, the timeless battle of the sexes and all the savage vagaries of youth and love, all the high drama and the all mundane pettiness, this video captures it all. Now when will AI be able to replace Ray Wise with RFK Jr (it doesn’t have to do much), and edit in a bunch of anti-vax protest and various conspiracy theory signs in the crowd? Everything else in the video can be kept the same, and it would be a perfect mirror of our current times.
