Depatie-Frieleng was the animation studio that created the animated titles credit sequence for the first Pink Panther movie, taking the concept of the pink panther shape inside the diamond and making it a cartoon character, and audiences at the theater laughed so hard during the credits that United Artists comissioned Depatie -Freleng to produce more animated shorts with the pink panther character to be shown before the UA movies in theaters (for example a James Bond movie in the sixties had a pink panther cartoon attached during the coming attractions), soon after tv networks bought the cartoons and made a pink panther show for tv and Depatie-freleng created more characters for the show like the Inspector and the ant etc. So in the movie "universe" the pink panther is just the diamond, in the cartoon universe the pink panther is the actual character.

Strikes Again is my favorite. That Cato fight with the slow motion nunchuck to the face and subsequent slow motion "AAARRRGGHH!" is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I'm Alan Jones and I took over as editor on 'Return of...' and became full editor on 'Strikes Again' - 'Revenge' and 'Trail' so I do know a bit. Too many little points to go into with this history but I will say that Peter became more and more difficult to work with and that Blake had suggested making a slightly different 'Trail' to Peter who refused to be involved. Blake believed this was Peter just being contrary and not wanting Blake (and him) to make easy money. I always felt 'Trail' should have been made as a tribute to the Peter Sellers Clouseau character and not as an introduction to new inept detectives but Blake had been so frustrated by Peter that he wanted to prove he could do it without him.....which he couldn't.

The original Pink Panther films hold a special place in my heart for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the talent involved. It's also a part of family history - sort of. My parents had just gotten married in June of 1965 and were on their way to Niagara Falls. On the long drive, they decided to see a film playing at the drive in: "A Shot in the Dark". They loved it!! They were fans of the series ever since!! Dad introduced me to the film series when they cam along in the 70s and 80s and we laughed uproariously! Whenever one of the original films comes on, I sit down to watch. So glad you're talking about these films because this will generate interest in the older movies if some younger viewers have only seen the more recent Clouseau stuff. It's my favorite comedy movies franchise, but I only include the ones with Sellers in this group. For me, the best films of the series (with Sellers) include Return of, Strikes Again, and Revenge Of. I suppose I like them silly. The more disguises, the better. And I suspect we shall never see cinematic comedy like this ever again; these films take sequences and do them with long careful takes and with cleverly composed choreography. The pacing is often almost languid but it makes things all the more funny. You just don't see this kind of comedy movie-making today. Maybe it's because of audience attention spans, although I can't be sure. I can't remember the last recent comedy film I enjoyed that had long takes, and big gaps of silence as parts of the gags. The Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies make me laugh every single time I watch them. There's at least one skirmish between Kato and Clouseau where at one point we go into slow motion ... but we also get to *hear* everything in slow motion; that is genius. It's so funny.

It's interesting you mention Strikes Back was like a James Bond spoof considering Sellers was in the original Casino Royale (1967), the not really, Bond movie.

When I was a kid, I always wondered why the films were called the Pink Panther series, when it seemed like it should have been called The Inspector series, like the spin-off cartoon series.

it is weird how all it takes is "we thought we could replace the director and actor and then call the movie Inspector Clouseau" to sully that name ever being used as a title again, even when it makes much more sense. Studios are so sensitive to that kind of thing, especially when it's their own doing.
@markdicristofaro904 Жыл бұрын
Many actors have tried to recreate Clouseau, but Peter Sellers was the only one who could make it great. And Herbert Lom is the only one who could complete, Dreyfus. It's very rare when comedy becomes gold, these two captured it and the world benefited. And these movies wouldn't have had greatness without the rest of the actors and actresses. Everyone did a great job.

Thanks so much for putting this together! Growing up, it was incredibly confusing to me that my parents could enjoy this movie so much given that I was more familiar with the cartoon ... and the Pink Panther was barely in these! That irritated me to no end. But as a an of Laurel and Hardy (love how you dropped that in there) and physical comedy, I'll give Peter Seller and this series another shot.

I grew up with these movies and still love them dearly! But I could never bring myself to watch Trail and the film without Peter Sellers. The first one is still my favorite. It's a bit different and the humor more subdued (comparatively), which puts it slightly ahead of the others for me.

I thought it would be great if you looked at the 2nd draft script of Romance of the Pink Panther to get your thoughts and see if you feel it would've worked or not even without Blake Edwards involved. The script for Romance is online its 115 pages long. It was planned as the final film in the series. If Sellers hadn't passed apparently the week after in Late July 1980 he was supposed to go to LA to have major open heart surgery, it was planned to start filming Romance in September of that year in Paris but if Sellers wasn't feeling up to it after the surgery it wouldve been delayed till January 1981. He also made arrangements to use the same studios in France that he used for his final film The Fiendish Plot of Dr Fu Manchu

This is one of my favorite film franchises I was first introduced to the series with the animated shorts when they aired on Boomerang, and unfortunately the 2006 remake and then I discovered the old films and started watching them and I loved them, it’s sad how the series fell from grace after Peter Sellers’ death but I feel like there were some missed opportunities while they were making Curse of The Pink Panther they wanted the series to be the comedic answer to the James Bond series and that’s the way I see it.

Catherine Schell's character in Return is actually Clouseau's wife from the first film. She ran off with the Phantom in Pink Panther, and here she is still with him in Return. Weirdly, Clouseau doesn't recognize her, but she apparently does.

@@Olya290795 It must be the same characters. The actress from the first Pink Panther came back with David Niven's character in Trail of the Pink Panther. Catherine Schell is addressed as Lady Litton in Return. I can't see David Niven running around with a mistress for one film and going back to his wife right after it. It's just more weird continuity from a film series full of odd stuff like that.

Can't be as Clouseau wouldn't act that way around his former wife. Clueless as he is the dynamic simple doesn't work if they're the same person.

While I love all of the films with Peter Sellers(aside for Trail), my favourite in the series is still the first one. I just love the scenes where most of the main cast plays part in the comedy, such as the scenes in Clouseau's room or the car chase toward the end. It does however lack Dreyfus who is probably my favourite character, even over Clouseau.
