Disney also needs to make an original villain. NO twist, NO betrayal, NO internal conflict with oneself. An ACTUAL villain like Gaston, Ursula, Cruella, even Chernobog and he never talked (unless you count House of Mouse) Last Disney movie with an actual decent memorable villain was Ernesto Delacruz from Coco....THAT WAS FROM 2017!! I bet no one remembers any villains from any movies that came after Coco, let alone like any of them (I'm looking at you Ercole from Luca...literally had to look up what was his name) (Edit: none of the villains are in order of who I like, its just a list of random villain names, I was just listing off villains, thts it, nothing else. Also, forgot that Coco was Pixar, but thats not the point, the point is that it has been a very long time since we had an actual decent villain from Disney.)

I HATED Ercole, and not even in a "oh dude I admire him as well written villian character!" kind of way like yeah, dude throws his superiority and weight around, and he makes my blood to see him sink so low as to beat up little kids, but he's also so pathetic, and he's eats up a lot of screentime that could had gone somewhere else. I get that's the overall point of his image and character, but eh, the movie could do without him.

This. I wish that we'd get more movies where the son wants to follow in the dad's footsteps, but the dad doesn't want the son to because of variables like danger, lack of time, stunting relationships. Stuff like this would be so much cooler. Or maybe even the, "I'm not you, dad!" trope could be at least interesting if something came around where the son realizes that he has to follow as a matter of responsibility, honor, or duty to family/tribe.

I agree! Most of the time it seems like the kid never expresses dislike of the things the dad has him do until some ‘outburst’ that starts the movie. Either that, or they get upset over like, normal discipline that every kid should get. Stuff like “You’re not allowed to go to the party because you did something illegal” is TOTALLY valid parenting, but movies use it as ‘kid is right, parent is wrong.’

@@chiseledcanary9656 Ironically, the relationship between Jaeger and his son was the only part I thought was even remotely interesting despite the fact that yes it is overdone to deeeaaath in the genre. To the movie's credit, I also kinda liked how they didn't fall into that woke trap of making men incompetent morons to make the women seem that much cooler. The mom was a great pilot and good fighter but the dad was also a great inventor and good explorer. Other than that, yeah the movie was painful to watch. I intentionally and willingly fell asleep at the end in the theater because I didn't want to watch any more of it.

Animated films usually don't get talked about in regards to their directors, so I wondered how this movie managed to fumble a pretty decent premise so badly. Then I learned the same directors made Raya and the Last Dragon and it suddenly made sense.

This might be my personal opinion, but Raya was HELL to watch (at least for me), all the characters were forgettable, the "antagonist" was a literal woman-child, and Sisu...I wanted her to actually die multiple times throught the movie, I hated that character so much. Strange World was mid, but honestly, I would rather watch a mediocre film than an insufferable one

The sad part is the world building probably isnt too bad it just the story is centered around the characters which are bad. Like the whole idea of the world being a giant turtle actually opens up a lot more questions which in turn leads to a much more interesting story. Like were the humans there native to the world or are like parasites like fleas or if they came from somewhere else then how did they not know about the giant turtle? Clearly they would've had some kind of sign that something was off. Like its a aquatic turtle does it not ever dive underwater? Or is water too shallow for it to dive and if thats the case than why did it adapt to live in water if 90% of it body isnt submerged. Theres a lot to go on but sadly we'll probably never find out.

I wonder if there are other turtles or is it just the one, was there more and this is just the last? Did the worlds "primitive" people have folklore about it? Its like they made it bad on purpose. And shoving the turtle plot twist at the end was all they thought up to. Because it literally doesn't have any affect on the outcome. Its practically alluding to a better story but then they ran out of time and shoved it out anyways. Showing the turtle is something you should put in the middle of the story and not the end. That way you have plenty of time to flush out why no one knew about it to begin with.

Dreamworks is becoming the new big entertainer nowadays. Their writing is better, animation is more experimental, and gives us what we want in a movie, even if its designed for kids. Take the new Puss in Boots for example. There's a lot of moments kids laughed, a lot of moments adults laughed, and the villain is actually scary. Underneath it all there is a lesson, but it isn't forced down our throats.

The majority of new Disney movies nowadays just push not only the typical family (or puberty issues, whatever the hell they can come up with.. like Turning Ded), but also woke shit down our throats, ESPECIALLY to CHILDREN. And CHILDREN watch those movies not knowing this and getting lost later in life and becoming and having woke ideas and shit later on (A few examples is this movie under review in the video, Lightyear, and several others). It's honestly sad that Disney's movie quality has degraded with time now that they're becoming corporate... Disney movies after Rapunzel didn't have any impact on me, but that's because in fact that there wasn't a good villain, and the hero didn't make a journey full of obstacles, which the previous ones did. Dreamworks is doing a good work with this. His villains are VERY memorable, have a good story, and look intimidating. Death so far is the BEST Dreamworks "villain", (Not that he really is, he's a force of nature, but still) he did send me shivers everytime I could hear his whistle. THIS is how to make a good villain. I'm tired to of these family issues with Disney in their stories.

The Lion King: child protagonist’s father dies in front of him and he weeps at his corpse’s side Mulan: a horde of no-nonsense warriors without a single speck of comedy destroys an entire village, including a child, and the protagonist has various breakdowns about her qualities and what she can bring to the family Cinderella: main character undergoes domestic abuse in an exaggerated, yet still very realistic and topical manner Moana: main character mourns her grandmother, co-protagonist was abandoned as a kid Strange World: characters always SLIP and RUN and SMACK ON THINGS and SCREAM and act WACKY!

Strange World is bad. Its marketing and box office was an absolute disaster. The movie itself is a hodge podge of generic story tropes, conflicts, and messages. They really try to force the conflict between Searcher and Jaeger and they really want you to think that they're exactly the same, and they're really not. Jaeger abandons his 15 year old after trying to force him to be exactly like him. Searcher lightly implies throughout the movie that he wants Ethan to continue his legacy, but he only becomes kind of forceful towards the very end. This conflict doesn't make sense and it's nothing new at all. There's some interesting ideas, like the giant creature thing, but nothing is done with it. This movie is bad.

The thing that’s forced between harder and searcher is the conflict between them. Hell, searchers whole thing wasn’t even that his father left him, so bringing that up never mattered to anything. The issue was that his father brought searcher on explorations and then the story collect forgets that the only reason searched found the energy in the first place, was because his father took him on an expedition Al thought Ethan’s whole thing wasn’t developed, there were signs that Sarracher was forcing Ethan to be a farmer when that wasn’t something Ethan ever said he wanted to be. Just because he did it differently does mean he wasn’t doing the same thing his father was supposedly doing to him.

@@BabyGirlTiny Honestly, I think it would've been interesting if the adventures themselves weren't the problem by Jaegar's need for them coming at the cost of his relationship with his son. Like in the first part, we see how Jaegar is something of a neglectful father thinking that Searcher is his son so he doesn't need help while we see Searcher struggling to keep up until he finds Pando. He tries to tell his father, but his father isn't listening until Searcher finally screams to get him to hear and tell him about the Pando and how they could farm it and just be a normal family. Jaegar rolls his eyes saying that they're Clades and danger and adventure are in their blood and why to sit on a farm when there's so much to explore. Searcher argues back that Jaegar only started taking him on adventures after his mother died and that he never wanted to go in the first place. Jaegar tries to ask if would he really be content living the rest of his life on a farm, doing the same thing every day and Searcher says yes. He says he's tired of putting his life on the line just so Jaegar can get the glory. Jaegar says fine and says he'll continue on his own then. Searcher calls out to him before getting angry and saying that he hopes he gets lost. He would come to regret these words when Jaegar does go missing beyond the mountains which causes him to cry in secret.

The theory is that the relationship was subdued to force Disney corporate's hand. They have a tendency to flat out cancel films with gay characters. So the studio made a character who was gay but the relationship was such a tiny part of the movie that it wouldn't be enough to make Disney bring down the axe.

They did it with Treasure Planet, except at least Treasure Planet was a solid movie in its own right (even if it is just Treasure Island in space) and just got outright screwed by its terrible, spoilerific marketing. Basically, what happened with Treasure Planet is that Disney intentionally set up the marketing to basically spoil a majority of the movie, in order to make sure that the movie bombed at the box office as justification to say that "people don't want 2D animation anymore". I wouldn't be surprised if they screwed Strange World up to try and engineer circumstances that can be used to justify a claim of "people don't want new and original stories" or something like that.

Man this movie's plot and conflict would be so much better if the 'twists' weren't twists and we had an actual antagonist. A: The 'twist' that the planet is alive should have come way sooner, like have Jaeger just say it when he reuinites with Searcher. It'd give these characters more reason to want to save pando before its revealed that its an infection. B: Have an actual villain, maybe have the bad guys be an evil corporation that want to be in charge of the city's energy instead of Searcher and pando. Callisto can still be a double agent, now she's just working for this corporation with a mission of making the crew disappear; and when its revealed that pando is an infection they go like "haha now we're going to exploit this resource for MONEY, we dont care if the turtle dies!" the bad guys all die in that PG-rated Disney fashion when the immune creatures realize they're another form of 'infection', the turtle doesn't die because that part was literally pointless, and the protags find like a more safe power source in the form of the turtle's shit or something I dunno. I came up with this in like ten minutes, compared to what must have been WEEKS in a writer's room for the plot we actually got. How do you fuck up the most OBVIOUS 'save the enviroment' story like that? Would it be ironic if Disney of all companies made a plot that says corporations are evil? Yeah, but its no more ironic than a notoriously homophobic company adding in their 30th 'first' gay character.
