Bear Ruby and Crew - Tricksters

-Bella trips the alarm from the West side of the house, as usual,
-gullible me heads toward the source of the commotion to investigate,
-Ruby and Crew breach the porch from the East, while I had my back turned.

Ruby seemed pretty relaxed with Patrick in a different spot than usual. Ruby seemed curious, but not aggressive. It continues to amaze me that bear moms seem comfortable with their cubs near Patrick - and sometimes unattended! That’s a LOT of trust! I don’t see what Patrick does to let the adult bears know that they are too close, but whatever it is, it seems pretty gentle. Ruby took her mild reprimand pretty well. She showed she understood. It looks like the adult bears (especially Ruby) understands that a mild reprimand is just a reminder for her not to get too close to Patrick. She clearly knows that she is still welcome on the porch - as long as she follows the Porch Rules. She seems a LITTLE startled, but only for a second or two, then she gives Patrick space. She MIGHT even feel a little guilty! Patrick has REALLY mastered the art of bear communication. He assumes they are smart and that they understand the Porch Rules - especially after a few visits. I love how Ruby and Simone know that their cubs are safe with Patrick. The cubs know they can hang out on the porch if mom leaves, but they also know they need to catch up with mom, so the cubs only spend a minute alone on the porch when mom heads off. One of my favorite videos is of Simone seeing a car coming, so she climbs a tree. When she sees that Patrick is the driver, she immediately climbs down the tree, knowing that Patrick is TOTALLY trustworthy and she is completely safe. Simone knew Patrick as a friend, even out of context.

Yes I almost did. Ruby is smart. She could’ve assumed the little one ran ahead into the bushes. But she knew the cub didn’t leave the porch. She came back looking for her cub and looked at Patrick. I almost fainted. But soon after she did leave one of the cubs on the porch and went ahead to leave. I guess by then she deemed him innocent of any wrongdoing because she saw the third cub. 😳

I can't help but chuckle at the cubs trying to climb down from the railing - it's hard to get a toe-hold when your little hind feet go through the slats and hang in space. They're so cute when they climb down from the fence. So careful. Same when they pass the 'pole'. I reckon balancing on that railing is nothing to them though, considering how skillful they were at climbing big trees already when they were just itty bitty!

Close encounters of the Ruby kind! Those cubs are so cute, following their mom in single file on the railing. And that one when he realized mom was gone. Poor little guy got quite a scare. Bears should instinctually avoid humans. A bear who doesn't fear humans can end up being a "nuisance bear" and could end up euthanized. Wild animals aren't cute and cuddly friends. Leave them be.

Its great to see the bears again getting up to mischief. I really missed it when they stopped you from feeding them , they started to give up coming around as much. It's amazing that their memory has them still checking the porch for food. It's amazing how gentle the mom bear is , they say never be around a mom and her cubs , yet she brings them to you, and while she will size you up , she knows she can trust you. She could easily have moved past the chair and really hurt you, but she doesn't, bears might be dangerous , but they aren't stupid , they know you as source for food so the mom let's you sit and watch, its almost like she has made a deal with a human , its actually really clever and intellectual, a non verbal deal so both human and bear get what they want.

Sydney Australia 1200 noon Saturday 15 June 2024. Temp 13.9 degrees Celcius. Raining 🌧. Always able to enjoy the bears that come to visit you and raid the birdseed. The little ones would continue on Mum's milk, is that correct, as well as what is available in the wild. Their scent must be all over your verandah and railings. Also, after all this time, it is lovely to hear Bella barking as she always does. I'm sure these videos are a blessing to so many folk who live elsewhere. Those bears are so at home. The garden and lawns are looking so lovely. 👌
