Speaking of huge extinct bears, here is an homage to pop culture as well as zoology and history (but also military affairs and/or loosely-related topics): In the move The Pianist there was the scene where the man and woman fought over food. Also, they were in the country of Poland, a state later overrun by the USSR. The Soviet Union’s (as well as that of pre- and post-Soviet Russia) national animal is a bear. The Soviet military became stronger due to her war with Nazi Germany just as the (?short-faced bear, see: Arctotherium - Wikipedia) became larger due to competition with other animals over food. Competition was what happened in the scene in The Pianist since “competition” in biological vocabulary means fighting over food. Even after the USSR collapsed, post-Soviet Russia still has a very strong military. In a similar way, the largest living land Carnivoran, largest living carnivorous land mammal (or perhaps more broadly, all animals) is the polar bear, another bear. I say “all animals” because the saltwater crocodile which is much bigger is often considered a marine, rather than land animal. The word Carnivoran is used to describe the order (taxonomic/biological category) that includes carnivorous mammals like cats, dogs and bears. Actually, many (though not all) members of this order are omnivorous. The word Carnivora is just a name given to that order.

Arctotherium was named by Hermann Burmeister in 1879. A specimen of A. angustidens from Buenos Aires shows an individual estimated, using the humerus, to weigh between 983 and 2,042 kg (2,167 and 4,502 lb), though the authors consider the upper limit as improbable and say that 1,588 to 1,749 kg (3,501 to 3,856 lb) is more likely. An estimated standing height for Arctotherium is 3.4-4.3 metres (11-14 ft). It would still make the genus the largest bear ever found and contender for the largest carnivorous land mammal known. 🙏🏻🇦🇷🙏🏻🇦🇷🙏🏻🇦🇷🙏🏻

3:46 Is the Kamchatka really that heavy? Dam, I guess Kodiak’s not the biggest brown after all. UPDATE: Ok there seems to be some inconsistency about the sizes of these bears. 1) The American Black Bear was listed as 90-272 KG in this video. 90-272 is indeed the average weight range for males of this species. The largest one weighed 410 KG after being skinned, and was speculated to have weighed 500 KG when it was alive. 2) The Eurasian brown bear was listed as 250-481 KG. Their average weight range is 250-300 KG. 481 KG was the size of the LARGEST Eurasian brown bear ever recorded. 3) The Kamchatka brown bear was listed as 650-700 KG. That's the sizes of the two largest specimen of that subspecies. Their average weight range is 350-400 KG. American black bear: Avg 90-272 KG, Max 500 KG Eurasian brown bear: Avg 250-300 KG, Max 481 KG Kamchatka brown bear: Avg 350-400 KG, Max 700 KG I'd also like to add the Grizzly Bear (Ursus Arctor Horribilis). Their average male weight can range from 136 KG to 409 KG depending on region. The largest wild one was 700-750 KG.
