I took our Tesla Model Y on the most epic road trip, from The Atlantic Coast in Florida, to the Pacific Coast in California. The total trip was 7 days and 5,730 miles!
During the trip, I took full advantage of the utility of the Tesla Model Y by utilizing Camp Mode to sleep in the car. I used the mattress I helped to develop, which is a combination of the comfort of foam, and the portability of and air mattress. This means its super comfortable, and more portable than foam. The foam inside combined with the 4 valves means it can inflate all on its own.
I also used my cooler/fridge that I have to bring drinks along and keep them nice and cool. During supercharging stops, I would usually grab a drink and stretch my legs. Most charging stops were about 25 minutes followed by a 2 hour drive.
My car is equipped with Full Self driving, but FSD Beta was turned off to not have any strikes. I used Autopilot/FSD for 95%+ of the trip as it makes driving distances like this a breeze. That coupled with the ease and convenience of the Tesla Supercharging Network makes for the ultimate road warrior car.
The California Tesla Takeover event hosted by Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley was located in San Luis Obispo, CA on Saturday. Over 2,300 people were in attendance, making it the largest Tesla event of the year. While there, I was able to sit down and interview Sandy Munro from MunroLive for an incredible exclusive and candid interview.
This dream trip was an incredible adventure and highlights how electric cars CAN be great options for long distance road trips. I will continue to take road trips as often as I can and personally prefer our Tesla Model Y for these adventures.

Excellent reporting! The addition of the minor things you encountered and forgetting your windshield cover is what makes this program great. It is exactly like what my trip would look like. Perfection does not create memories. But mess ups, you 'll always remember the time that..... And those are precious.

Liftgate light stays on all night when open. We used a tent that drapes over the open liftgate. Use a pen to flip the latch to closed position and light turns off. In the morning, push the "close" button to open the latch before closing the liftgate.

Spouse and I will be taking a 3900 mile road trip late September in our Tesla driving from Chicago to Vermont (fall colors), back to Chicago, and on to Arizona. We will be taking our time and camping the whole way. The packing is a bit more challenging with two people, but the Model Y has an amazing amount of cargo capacity. We like to stay at state parks along the way sleeping in the car and charging from a 50A electric post when possible. Our setup includes a Luno air mattress, TesCamp window blinds, and a Crown Shades popup canopy which we set up at our campsite for protection from sun and rain. We buy our food and drinks along the way cooking our evening meal outdoors in camp weather permitting. We stay at the campsite for a day (two nights) or more, then drive a full day covering about 500 miles to the next campsite. The car provides late evening entertainment (e.g. Netflix, KZbin), and Tesla's Camp Mode keeps the perfect interior temperature all night for sleeping. Navigate on Autopilot, along with a couple 30 minute charging stops, makes driving a 500 mile day a snap. It's a fun and economical way to travel.

We live in Boulder and travel to Vermont a couple of times a year. The trip to Vt and on to North Carolina this spring was 5000 miles. We are going to Vermont at the end of September. We stay in motels. We have had no problems charging. It’s fun driving our YLD.

Kudos to Tesla for getting the trip estimates close. I recently road tripped 210 miles to Fish Lake Utah, a destination that is at 8500ft elevation, a big climb at the end of the trip. I joked that the 24% estimate would be used up if I ever make it to the lake. I was surprised it maintained 24% except for the times I drove over posted limit or passed someone. I arrived with 18% remaining. Sure will take away range anxiety on future trips.

Great video! That was quite a trip damn... you are way nicer than I am, I would have chased that honda until I ran out of battery lol I never considered electric cars, never even looked at them, thought they were pimped out golf carts, a complete waste of money and time. Last weekend we drove to the city to shop for a new car for my wife, we drove past a tesla showroom, my wife really wanted to test drive the go carts, I didnt want to but figured meh it'll make her happy, she'll hate it and we'll never talk about it anymore... well I discovered a whole new level of customer service, I found out why there is almost a cult surrounding tesla, we fell in love with those cars so badly that we drove back out of the showroom with one the same day... even the kids fell in love, and they're used to the space/ comfort of minivans. I cant believe I waited that long to get into one, I cant wait to have some free time so that we can take the tesla on a long trip, those things are so fun to drive, the planning and navigation to chargers etc. makes it feel almost like planning a flight. I've always considered driving to be a waste of time, so we'd always try to take the plane instead of driving, especially on vacation, now it feels like driving somewhere will be a fun part of the trip, your video got me even more pumped! minus the crazy drivers out there...

@@BeardedTeslaGuy As a current ICE driver, the concept of not filling to 100% every time is confusing. Can you shed some light on that? Hoping to join the Tesla community in November. 👍🏻
@aguywithcats
@aguywithcats 2 жыл бұрын
@@73av8r5 The idea is simple: you only need to charge enough to reach the next charging destination. If you are going from place A to place B, and the computer says to reach B you should leave A with 60% state of charge, then there is no reason to charge past 60%. Don't worry, there is a margin included so that you don't arrive at B with zero percent battery. Additionally, the time it takes to charge is not linear. When the battery state of charge is low, charging is very fast. As the battery gets more "full", the rate of charging slows. At the risk of over-generalizing, to go from 0% to 50% charge is very fast. To go from 50% to 100% takes a long time. So if you don't NEED to charge to a high percentage, you save a lot of time by not doing so! Only fill up as much as you need, not as much as you can.

Thanks for taking the Southern route. I live in midwest and during the winter months I use the I44/I40 corridor with my ICE vehicle. I'v been waiting for someone to do a long trip in a Telsa. I consider a a long trip to begin at 5,700 miles which I have done many times. I am watching this to see how you do crossing the Mojave. The last time I made this trip Mojave ICE stations were down due to a power outage and I had to pay $7 USD/gallon for gas.

@@BeardedTeslaGuy Flat tires, minor accidents and bad drivers are a common site on a 5,700 mi road trip so I am glad you included that in your video. Just so you know with the exception of AZ. I find it easier to drive the Interstate highways rather than diverting to state roads. Reason, many ICE fuel stations are disappearing and I waste time trying to find open ICE fuel stations as many have closed.

Here are my stats based on my recent 950-mile trip. We did a long trip this month with 2 Teslas(model Y(2022) and 3(2019)) and a Hyundai Palisade. All cars were with almost full capacity of people, Model Y(4) Model 3(4) Palisade(7). The EPA estimate was very off on Teslas. I drove MY and kept the average speed between 70-75mph with a power consumption of 320kwh/mile. It did cost me $101.64 with 3hr 24 mins of charging overall(I didn't add the home charging price here, I started from home with 100% charge and reached back with 9% left). kwh price ranged between 35-44¢. Tesla pros: Autopilot...I don't have FSD Tesla Cons: I had to maintain the lower speed to achieve the millage. Need to be careful about weight. Less comfort for passengers. All supercharging stops didn't have amenities like food and restrooms. We had to stop again for food. A lot of planning was required. The gas car did cost $128 for the entire trip Gas car Pros: More capacity, Better comfort, fewer stops, no change in MPG with 7 people and full of luggage. Gas car Cons: Adaptive cruise is not as good as Autopilot but it kept the car in the lane most of the time by following the front car. My conclusion is that there was only a $20 saving with EV, and the further we go the costlier the charging gets compared to Gas. At this point, I feel that Tesla is only good for daily commute and for some special occasions. The direction that Tesla is heading on to increase the price on everything makes them more irrelevant on saving. Remember that the gas prices are going 👇 now.

Thanks for the information. I'm still trying to figure out if more and frequent super charging stops is overall faster than going a little slower but extending the distance between super charging stops, seems illogical to have to stop after only 80-90 miles. If I keep it around 65-70 mph I can get consumption around 250w per mile, I don't have free supercharger miles so try to reduce consumption. On a recent 1,300 mile trip from MI to FL had only 6 SC stops and stayed overnight at motels with Tesla destination chargers. It was a very doable and easy trip.

Hello, I am not yet a Tesla owner but soon, delivery date 1-2 Oct, however I am looking forward to it and while waiting I am educating myself watching KZbin videos. I have a question, why do you not charge to 80%, Tesla instruction say mine will charge up to 282 kilometers or 175 in 15 minutes to 80% (I know ideal conditions and level 3 charger) but it would stress me to leave at 59% to reach destination at 14%, why not leave at 80% and get there at 35% (keep the tank full) and have room for major detours or a big accidents and stuck on highway for 3 hours while they finish an investigation or commonly in Canada stuck for 6 hours in a snow storm while they clear the roads. Cheers and thank-you for your video! Looking forward to your answer if you would.

Did you consider campgrounds for any of your overnights? 1.) They usually have showers; 2.) You can charge there by plugging in your mobile connector; 3). No delay to hit the hay, and 4.) you can charge to 100%, allowing a longer first leg in the morning.
