As a 2022 Model 3 owner, I think for anyone who drives less than 250 miles per day and can charge at home, the Model 3 or Model Y are very good cars for the money and probably the best EV's you can buy. If you can’t charge at home, just make sure superchargers are available in the areas you travel. If you have a Tesla store in your area, you can always make an appointment to test drive one. They do not pressure you to buy anything and it will answer any questions you have about EV ownership and daily use.

Eh, if you can’t charge at home or work then your commute should be less than 30% of the range so that you aren’t spending a lot of time at the supercharger. I get free slow charging at work so I’ll get about 25-40% battery every day depending on a lot of different conditions.

I've owned a 2019 Model 3 LRDM for almost 5 years and 63k miles. It's been the most trouble-free car I've owned in my 69 years. Battery capacity has degraded 9%. The car has had zero maintenance other than one set of wiper blades and a set of tires. Warranty repairs have been minimal and trouble free. Over the 63k miles I've owned it, the car has averaged 249 wh/mile, including lots of high speed and cold temp driving. Just yesterday I drove the car from Jackson Hole, WY to Berkeley, CA (900 miles) and achieved 246 WH/mile....almost exactly the EPA rated range. This drive included many hours of 75 MPH cruising. Most of my charging is at home at zero cost (using solar panels), or at the house in Jackson at 6 cents a KW/H. When traveling long distances the Supercharger network has been flawless. Over the 63k miles I've driven this car I've saved about $10k in fueling costs in addition to ~$5k in maintenance costs. At this point the interior of the car is virtually indistinguishable from new, and everything works at least as well as it did when the car was new. I should also note that with the ongoing OTA software updates the car just keeps getting better. All in all I'm a very satisfied customer and would be definitely buy another Tesla vehicle. One final thing, the "dealership experience" with this car has been orders of magnitude better than anything I've experienced with any other vehicle I've owned. The service centers are knowledgeable and honest, potential problems can be diagnosed remotely, most of what little service I've had has been done in my driveway, prices are reasonable, and the quality of work is far superior to 3rd party dealers. The purchasing experience also has been head and shoulders better than what I've experienced with 3rd party dealerships. All in all, a great ownership experience. Oh, and this car hauls ass, handles really well, is great in the snow, and gets 125 MPG.

That was a 80° day where I cruised at 69mph for the entire trip with my AC set to 74°. I charge at home about 80% of the time and after 4 years, my range estimate still shows 310 miles for a full charge which would likely equate to about 275 - 280 real miles. My car currently has 37,339 miles.

Nice balanced review... FSD though is now (month ago!) $8k, not $12k... not sure how you missed that? and, the monthly subscription is half, $99 not $199 (MUCH better deal, as it's not tied to the car and wasted $ if you later sell/trade-in or totalled in accident. You might as well save your money and just pay for the month you test it?) Also, FSD is not so much a "safety system", but... cool gimmick/feature; all the safety systems (emergency braking, sentry cam, others) ARE FREE standard in all Teslas, and even the great highway AutoPilot is free/standard on all models/trims. Newer ModelYs after 2020 also got slightly but notably improved suspension supposedly (and dual-pane front windows to reduce noise)... not NEARLY as marked suspension/ride quality improvement as the refresh "Highland" Model 3 got, which smooths out bumps and road noise a LOT more than the old 3/Y... hope can bring to a refreshed Y soon... meanwhile, the new Model 3 Performance still has the $7.5k tax credit, go buy that :) 5-8% battery degradation in 4yrs/40k miles is... about right, maybe bit high, but as you said have tortured it a bit... biggest degradation comes up front, then it plateaus, so.. probably won't lose much more than a few % more over next years.

Plus brake service and coolant. Maybe going slightly above the recommended service (meant to just barely make it to end of warranty ) kept us out of the shop for major repairs but it just could do as much as the model Yp. Fair review. Also have to note that wind conditions also impact range and the vehicle will let you know how much of an impact it is. My MYP is a 2022 and I agree that Tesla has improved the build quality a lot. I have a colleague who bought a new MYP same color as mine and his build quality was way better minus no parking sensors and cheaper rear calipers. I’m use to still ride quality as I’ve always drove high performance vehicles. I like the tight steering and nothing moves like a high performance EV. I subscribed to FSD as it’s cheaper than buying it out right. $99 a month and I use it for my work commute and weekend trips. Version 12 is really good and it makes the long drives easier to deal with. Worth the money if you have a long commute to work or take weekend trips out of town. The residual value is horrific. I paid 70K out the door and Tesla offered less than 28K on trade 😂 this has me really rethinking about how I manage my fleet. I still have my 2013 Honda Accord Touring and it’s paid off in good shape. No plan to sell it. I will keep the MYP as well after paying it off because the maintenance so far has been insanely low. Tired are expensive but that’s to be expected for a high performance vehicle. The free software updates keep the car fresh. I will just do a short term lease on a new Tesla and keep my MYP for long commutes and road trips. There are Tesla vehicles out there with 100’s of thousands of miles and they are still going strong. Makes no sense to give a good vehicle away for next to nothing.

Don’t believe the hype. They are talking about the fastest charger you can install. That would also require a bigger breaker panel which the utility wont allow if the local network can’t handle it. There are different levels of chargers. The mid tier is just a dryer plug and will charge up overnight. Using a lower level charger is also easier on the battery pack.

Charging at higher speed uses less power than AC and using an oven or stove top. If you and your neighbors can cook and run the AC at the same time you are fine. Also you can set the start and end time. Since I am cheap I plug in when I get home and set the car to star charging at 9 PM or later when the rates have dropped because grid usage is low.

That would be a bummer.
@ymcpa735 ай бұрын
Depends on where you drive. I have a model S. My daily drive is mostly on canyon roads at 50 mph and some freeway driving usually in traffic. My car is averaging 261 kw/mi. That equates to about 383 miles. When it's just canyon driving, I'm getting about 230 kw/mi, or 434 miles. My car has the 21" wheels and is supposed to get 375 miles per the EPA. So, on those kind of drives, I'm exceeding the EPA estimates. Now on road trips at 75-80 mph, I'm getting about 290kw/mi or 340 miles. Now in real world driving, you normally aren't charging past 80% and not going below 20%. So, the distance between charges is lower than the EPA range. My car is a 2020 and has 50k miles on it. So far, I have just 1% degradation because for daily driving I actually keep it at 65%. We'll see how it does when it gets to 100k miles. I doubt you will have issues with the battery. Even when the battery is no longer any good for driving, it will still have value for home energy storage. So, you won't be dumping it. I also doubt recycling will cost anything. I have recycled the batteries for a universal power supply and no one has every charged us anything.

Well if they say the most battery degradation occurs in the first 50K miles, 5% would be about right. What we don't know is how often you charged it to 100%. Did we really save money by not having the fill up with gasoline but subjected to steeper depreciation ( vis-a-vis gasoline car depreciation)?
@katherinesilens29945 ай бұрын
Most of the depreciation on these cars, which were released 4 years ago, is due to a combination of price cuts and the instant value-off of tax credits. When you take those factors out they actually hold value annoyingly well, as anyone who's shopped for a used one and compared it to the real price of a new car knows. If you get 7,500 back on a new car and last year's used cars are less than 7,500 off... it's only depreciated in the technically correct sense. That said, price cuts still do result in loss of residual for those who bought when it was ~80k during the pandemic hike. That pattern shouldn't continue, and it was known to be a temporary thing during that time, but still sucks. I wouldn't expect that to continue; the next hit should just be the mid-life refresh called Juniper. The real cost is insurance and tires. My insurance is good and I'm definitely saving a boatload of money in comparison to alternatives I was considering, but the whole market is strange right now still.

We owned a Model Y for nearly 3 years. The following is a PSA for anyone considering any EV: -The digital key sucked -The AC sucked. Felt hot on even a spring day with the AC “blasting” & takes up to 120 seconds to actually cool the air. -Average $1,000 per year in tires. No, we don’t drive crazy. -2 tow trucks for unforeseen issues (ICE to the rescue when the Magic School Bus episode is over) -15% range degradation at 2.5 years -average $151/month electricity cost to charge it -$350/month for Tesla Insurance because the car erroneously generates collision warnings for parked cars on the street and people on sidewalks. -$1,000 deductible times 2 ($2,000 total) for windshields because the Tesla acoustic glass is easy to internally shatter from the same road debris that just scratches a normal windshield. So yes, we are on our third windshield. -in total it was $4,500 in maintenance in 3 years for a “maintenance-free” car -the car pulled more than its entire battery capacity from the charger during the last freeze, so I can’t leave it in the airport parking garage for a couple days in the winter -the rear windows (where the cars panel gas are) randomly rolled themselves down while the car was parked & unoccupied and would not roll back up without manual override. This happened once every few days and we have narrowly avoided this happening during thunderstorms. -multiple screen cutouts while driving on the freeway & one uncommanded software update that left my wife stranded for 30 minutes -minor injuries to my wife because of full-force phantom braking on the freeway -at least 2 instances of pressing the “accelerator” down and the motors not engaging. -2 month loss of use of the backseat due to seat belt buckles being jammed A spade is a spade. The Model Y is a dangerous lemon, and I was thrilled to get rid of it, even being $13,000 upside down in it. I truly wish you better fortune but I will never get an EV ever again.

I can't believe people buy NEW 2024 model year Teslas actually. The newer Model 3 and Model Y long range AWD version both see their range revised downward again just last week. And with Tesla recommended charging of no more than 80%, the stated range of Model Y LR AWD of 308 is reduced to 246 miles. That is not what we call a "long range" model. And if you get the Model Y LR AWD with the 20 inch rims and tires package, the range is further decreased to just 287 miles. and 80% recommended charging of that further reduce the usable range to 229 miles only. Forget it. But, if people are buying the older Teslas, I think at least they are much cheaper to get their toes into the EV world. Yet, don't forget eventually the batteries will die and it is still a big question mark how to recycle the enormous amount of dead batteries and who will do it and for how much.
@ymcpa735 ай бұрын
You don't own an EV do you? For daily driving, the range doesn't matter. I plug in daily and the car is charged up every morning. So, 246 is more than enough for daily driving. On road trips, I charge to 100% right before I leave. On a trip from LA to Las Vegas, we stopped at Primm, NV to charge 270 miles away. It still had 15% charge. That is 317 miles of range on freeway driving. Daily driving is in traffic and the range is actually even higher. I exceed the EPA range on daily driving. Now you are correct that for trips over 500 miles, the range will be less because it doesn't make any sense to charge past 80% on a supercharger. The charging speed slows too much. So, after the initial 300 miles of range, you will get about 200 miles from each charge. So, the Vegas trip required just a 10 min charge, but a 1000 mile road trip would require about 1 hour of charging. I take trips like that maybe once in 3 years. 95% of my driving is local.

What happened to the interior? The interior B pillar has a huge gap to the roof and the rear ‘hook’ is missing. Typical Tesla quality.
