I'm surprised to hear you say that things like sausage links, ham slices and potatoes aren't part of an American breakfast. For anyone outside of the US reading this, it absolutely is. These are some of the most common components of an American breakfast, especially at a restaurant or home-cooked. I grew up in California and have lived in Texas for 10+ years now, these are common ingredients in both states and I've seen them in other states I've visited. I think English people get a very different perspective from TV or something about the food we eat in the US. I have an English friend who lives in Texas near me, they have only been here a year and the amount of times I've heard them exclaim how surprised they are by our food is off the charts.

American Breakfast Tips: * We do have sausage links and/or a slice of ham quite commonly for breakfast * Biscuits and gravy are a southern style thing but can be found all over * "Jelly" should be clear of any plant fibers, seeds, etc, like a juice with gelatin. But we also use the terms jam, marmalade, and preserves, which refer to more chunky versions of fruit spreads. * Pancakes look good but if you get that little extra char on them they are so amazing.

Jam and jelly are two distinctly individual things and both are beloved and sold in the USA. Jelly is made with fruit juice while jam is made with whole fruits. It's also highly unlikely that the jam or jelly (fruity bits in it or not) was black currant flavor. Black currents were largely decimated in early American history from a disease carried over on imported European plants. So finding black currant anything in the US is pretty rare. It may have been grape jam/jelly tough because Americans often have grape flavored products where the Brits have black currant.

Just as an added educational fact; Jam, Jelly and Preserves are not interchangeable words as they are made very differently. Jam: made from mashed fruit. Usually has mashed fruits. Jelly: made from strained fruits. No fruit chunks in it. More like half melty jello. Preserves: chunks of fruits that aren't always mashed. EDIT: Wow. I was not expecting the variety of comments. I love the 'Merica mentions like this isn't the method recognized Worldwide. This post is less about correction and more about education in a simplified manner. This has nothing to do with 'Murica vs the World. Sheesh. Buncha pitchforkers round here.

@@DaysofKnight i'm not a huge fan of ham steak, or "country ham" for breakfast, id rather have sausage links, steak, corned beef hash or bacon(rather than sausage patties); the ham is always a bit salty for my taste, but i do occasionally eat a ham steak with breakfast - especially if im getting a breakfast biscuit. and he probably isnt away that they sell them(ham steaks) in damn near every grocery store in the US, and breakfast sausage(links) even more so. my favorite breakfast though has to be: 2 sausage links, corned beef hash, hash browns, 2 eggs(both hash browns and eggs with plenty of tabasco), rye toast and hot tea with milk and sugar. either that or just steak and eggs lol.
