Alejandro alongside Bad Romance and Telephone is part of her 'Fame Monster' album which she described as a culmination of her fears; death, fame, sex. This particular song is about her fear of men but the video as described by the director is "about a woman's desire to resurrect a dead love and who can not face the brutality of her present situation. The pain of living without your true love." also, during this era, the 'don't ask, don't tell' issue was really big so she decided to make a commentary and she said in an interview that it features a “homoerotic military theme” as a a celebration of her love and appreciation for the gay community; admiration of their bravery, their love for one another and their courage in their relationships.

She payed homage to the "homoerotic love" in the era of "Don't ask, Don't tell" law in the military. The clip was directed by fashion photographer Steven Klein who is known for his amazing editorial work and for his rt in collaboration with stars like Madonna and David Bowie. His style is this very dark aesthetic with a bit of Eastern European War aesthetic.

I've always gotten Hitler/Nazi Germany vibes from the scenes in black and white with the men with the black hair and bowl-style haircuts, so your comment about Schindler's List is interesting and spot-on, IMO. The part where she's dressed like a nun (and she eats the rosary) is a commentary on the Catholic church and homosexuality. This is one of her more iconic videos but also one of the ones that has the most open ends and has always been the video of hers that has made me really "think" the most.
