Damaged sealing of the cameras tried (dozens of types since 2006) have all enabled water penetration, including humidity, and eventually failure if used outdoors in the weather. High rainfall area here, about 3m pa. Bears would try the patience deeply, with thoughts of rug blanks. A possibility to try is taping extra hot pepper powder on them. Double sided tape with its external surface liberally coated enabling it to be tasted without penetrating a layer of tape & the camera would be something to experiment with. Extra on the external battery cover etc, other critters will rip those off. Even a separate bait just below. Two cameras facing of course, it will have entertainment value if it works. Positioning them somewhere less obvious will also enhance results. A couple of climbing steps to get it higher & out of biped predator reach is one way. A cheap laser sight rested on it will aim it ok, and wedging something behind it to adjust aim.

We bought metal boxes and used deck screws to attach it to the tree for our stealthcams, definitely helped stop the bears from chewing them up and helped keep people from stealing them. My whole family buys bear tags and fill them every year. There seems to be an over abundance of bears now, or at least a lot more than there used to be.

Michael, I feel your pain. They’ve destroyed lots of cameras, apple trees, wood splitter gas tanks, tractor seats. As for trail cameras I carry a 6-7’ ladder and get the camera up high pointing down. They’ve left them alone. I buy cameras mounts that screw into trees. I put them in scrub trees they I won’t damage by screwing the mount in. It allows me to angle the shot and center it much better than the straps. Good luck!!

How about setting up the camera in pairs so you might get a video of the “attack” to see if it gives and hints as to why they seem to be so attracted to them?

Bears are fun to observe. It’s interesting that the bears there are so interested in your cameras. I have seven cameras out on my place, and numerous bears around, but they don’t bother the cameras much - only twice in about ten years of putting out the cameras. I Also don’t have the same issue with them damaging timber. Lots of orchards and vineyards around me - a more convenient food source might keep them out of the trees.

It's possible the bears are hearing some frequency from the trail cameras that are causing them to attack, another KZbinr has a similar issue with his bees, cellphone, and Bluetooth microphone whatever signal the bees pick up causes them to swarm the microphone and cellphone.

Get a cheap plastic container that fits on top of the camera. Tape it on with just well enough so a light breeze won't blow it off. Add a liberal helping of ground black pepper and cayenne pepper. Bears like to come around and stick their noses in things and take a big sniff. A cope sniffs of that mixture just might satisfy Mr. Bears curiosity about trail cams. It only takes once for dogs to figure out not to sniff around black pepper. There's also a commercial product (that used to be called "Critter Ridder" ) that you sprinkle on dogs favorite pee spot. They take one whiff and it puckers them right up. Of course bears would probably eat it, but it might be worth a try.

Cayenne pepper in a balloon attached around the camera. Of course no need to blow up the balloon or balloons, but a couple of bites on it they might leave them alone. You could try household ammonia in balloons instead of pepper. Once or two tastes of the ammonia and they will remember cameras taste bad.

Hot pepper, like others said, might work. It might repel other animals too though. It would likely get washed away from the 1st rain that happens. Are there waterproof capsules that would be broken open by anything messing with/biting them? DIY aluminum foil pouches? P.S. Do you think detritus covered root flares could be killing some of the old growth trees?

I've only had a bear bite my cameras twice in the last 25-30 years. First time was with my first 35mm film game camera. I often hang them high and use lock boxes, cables with locks and python locks. I wonder what would happen if you sprayed some cayenne (or even hotter) pepper spray on there, or better yet some bear spray! Then you could let it dry before you put up the camera. Once it gets rehydrated by the bear's saliva, it'll burn like hell and hopefully put them off messing with them after they've gotten a mouthful a few times and start associating that negative experience with the cameras. Worth a try anyway.
