Had to ban Mix Master Mike from competing back in the day because he destroyed everyone. article below.... Since he started scratching in San Fran, he’s spun records for both the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, one of the most recognized turntablist crews of all time, and the Beastie Boys, one of the most influential groups in hip-hop. He’s also been barred from competing in the national DMC championships after winning one too many titles with fellow Pikl QBert, and received a lifetime achievement award from the International Turntablist Federation.

You guys have GOT to get into the Paul's Boutique album a little bit. You will LOVE it!! They sampled a ton of 70's funk and soul and just mixed it into this crazy beautiful mash of incredible hip-hop. Start with anything. Shake Your Rump is a blast but it's all so cool. Some have referred to Paul's Boutique as the "Sgt. Pepper" of hip-hop.... I'm not sure about that but it does establish a new direction for the Beasties heading into the 2000's.

No second record playing a loop, no drum machine, no computer. He's rapidly back-spinning on kick and snare parts, then jumping to separate synth and horn parts. On one record. Because he's a Master.

Great observation that a lot of reactors miss that this is throwback, as it was their intention on a lot of this album. And an interesting choice at the time as our generation was starting to realize we were "getting older". Mixmaster Mike is/was one of the most prominent djs in the world, coming out of the Bay Area with the Invisibl Skratch Piklz crew. It was a big deal in the culture when he joined the BBs. @@mikefetterman6782 I get it & agree with you to a point my friend. I have no doubt the Beastie Boys played a very important part on helping to evolve the game of Hip-Hop to another level. However, the BB are really one of many Hip-Hop artists who helped put Hip-Hop on the map. But I wouldn't go as far to say Hip-Hop wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for the BB, that's a little silly to say, don't ya think? Don't get it twisted, being a BB fan from day-1 I truly believe we can maybe count on one hand of other Hip-Hop artists who had as much impact & gave so many contributions to Hip-Hop who compare to the Beastie's. On another note just to keep it a buck here & come correct. The BB album "License To Ill" hasn't been the biggest selling Hip-Hop album in quite a while. Although, the BB might have held that title back in the day, they certainly don't anymore. That title belongs to "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" album by OutKast now. Also the BB "License To Ill" album wasn't the 1st Rap album to go platinum either. Run-DMC's album "Raising Hell" was the first album to go platinum really. Just saying...

Ill Communication and Check Your Head were amazing in how they they used a couple tracks to pay homage to their punk roots, and then dropped 'new school' psychadelia into hip hop. But within the BB catalog, Paul's Boutique is an incredible demonstration of implementing music samples into hip hop. Check out the song Shake Your Rump. That album used samples from 105 different songs, yet were laced throughout each song very cohesively. I'll admit that it was their later, psychadelic stuff that hooked me. But there are definitive traces of genius scattered throughout their older albums. And to think, they started out in New York's underground punk scene. Like other NY artists during the early days of hip hop and rap, they spread their musical horizons, adapted hip hop to their repertoire and made history. Excellent reaction, guys. :)
