Slash is a great guitarist, but this track doesn't need the solo reinventing, Orianthi is a great guitarist and it's a great cover, but ultimately, there is only 1 person who owns this solo. Eddie Van Halen, RIP man, fucking legend.

But anyway, NO Ed was not loaded when he got there because he didn't want to piss off Jones. In the end, Ed essentially re-wrote the song and took about a half hour to track the solo. He was given full artistic reign. MJ was down the hall doing voice-overs in S7 which made it that much easier for Ed to do his thing. The solo was parted but the final was cut on 2" tape. Slash created a lot of great iconic guitar riffs. But the virtuosity of EVH just is completely beyond his reach. It ain’t his thing. I suppose your could say he just choose to play it as “himself” rather than Eddie. But to me, this is an iconic EVH solo and I Slash’s quasi-bluesy riffing here just doesn’t work at all for me.
@donharrold13752 жыл бұрын
I think you’ve got to remember it’s Slash. He could probably learn that solo note for note in his sleep I’d think, but Slash tapping would just look utterly foolish and the guy just wouldn’t go there. It would make him look like a bedroom wannabe player and when you’re a huge name like Slash you’re simply not under any pressure to do that and he doesn’t.
@davidblickstein2 жыл бұрын
@@donharrold1375 I surely agree with you about the integrity of resisting merely copying. And goodness knows, the 80s, 90s and 2000s, 2010s and 2020s have yielded hordes of people seemingly not reaching much further than sounding like EVH. While I tend to avoid these internet contests about who was the best or most influential... and while I'm not even prepared to say that EVH is my favorite guitar player to listen to (I think it's Steve Morse actually), I will go so far as to say that IMHO NO guitar player comes remotely close to the influence that EVH had. He influenced the repetoire of technique of how a guitar can be played, he influenced how guitars are constructed/equipped, etc. etc. I love pretty much every other influential guitar player you can name, but I'm going to give the nod to "most influential" to EVH. Ain't gonna weigh in on "best", "most technically advanced", etc. But in the specific category of "influence" I just think it's hard to make put anyone else up against Eddie.

@@rockymits Honestly I don’t think that’s true. It’s going to look pretty silly for Slash to be tapping away? I’m fairly sure he got on board with the proviso that “I do my own thing”. It’s Slash? I agree. But it's also about the context of the show. The show Orianthi was rehearsing was a bowing out retrospective for MJ. In that context, I think it's better to remain more loyal to the original. Slash was doing it at a more active point in MJs career, where a new take on older stuff was a good idea to keep the show alive, and was a huge name in his own right with his own recognisable style.
