I sold a non exclusive licence for 250$ to a big artist and he still havent used it, initially he wanted the exclusive.
@StreetfighterU2 ай бұрын
Exclusive beats are almost never worth it (imo tho) because of the labour a producer puts into it vs benefits gained from it. Imo The time and effort put into a beat and for it to be exclusive has to be worth a LOT, and not just money wise but also getting your name out there and exposed to a larger fan base (likely being the rapper/singer’s fan base) when the official track gets released. If the artist doesn’t have that then what happens is that they start flaking or they disappear after the hype you get from working with them and seeing potential visions (that unfortunately don’t always pan out).

The concept of “leasing” a beat was always a scam 😂

@@schpilkas right How can you stop the artist from re-using ? How can the artist stop the producer from not reselling the beat again 🤦🏾♂️
@ghost-user559Ай бұрын
@@blkgostnone4092What do you mean? There is no limit to the producer leasing it, because they own it, so that’s expected if you didn’t get an exclusive. And the artist just gets a copyright strike and you remove everything they put up if they breach contract and reuse something they don’t have a license to use. That’s what all these copyright systems and license agreements are about.
@blkgostnone4092Ай бұрын
@@ghost-user559 Apparently you didn’t comprehend my previous reply, so I’ll restate it just for little ol’ you 😆. It’s a scam because you can’t stop an artist from using the beat beyond the set period. Depending on terms of the artist doesn’t pay, you can’t get the beat back. On the producer side of things the artist can’t stop a producer from reselling the same beat over and over. It’s really not a hard concept to understand “Copyright strike” lol cute….like that would stop anything Also keep in mind not many producers have the business acumen to actually put those “copyright strike systems” in place for THEIR OWN products (not using another’s entity’s TOS)

It's baffling how many artist complaints stem from lack of awareness on the legalities. One situation that nobody talks about is when an artist buys an exclusive, prior licensing artists still hold the right to continue using their copy (in all contracts I'm aware of, including beatstars templates). If this is a dealbreaker, they should ask about prior licensors first. If everyone did their homework, wires wouldn't cross nearly as much. I appreciate you bringing light to the industry "what-if"s. The game needs more minds like yours!
@ripplesakaauditorygenius96822 ай бұрын
As an Artist and a Producer I see both sides. But Producers for the most part copy and paste contract templates and are not transparent whatsoever with anything. Let alone most don't even respond unless it leads to a bag. So how do you do homework on something when you don't know what the assignment is in the first place? How am I to know if you are a sample producer or an instrumentalist that plays every note? And your contract voids you of any responsibility by putting the burden on the artist. And then you don't even mention that you used a major sample? So if my track goes viral and their was a sample that didnt get cleared then I am the only person as the artist that loses anything. IT IS THE PRODUCER OR BEATMAKERS CHOICE TO USE THE SAMPLE SO WHY SHOULDNT YOU BE RESPONSIBLE AS THE PRODUCER FOR CLEARING IT? Especially younger artists wouldnt even know a sample was used most likely. I work with a couple producer that clear any sample they use in a beat they are going to lease or sell... The same legit producers who Don't charge extra for trackouts that are WAVS and dont charge extra for Sync Licenses on anything. Oh yeah and dont expect 50/50 splits on the new master publishing and writing. ALL for free that is, And they make amazing money not up charging for nonsense. Or stealing half of an artists royalties, by retaining ownership in every new master recording from every artist. When you claim the leases are royalty free and we keep 100% of what we make!!!! lol as with any business their is legitimate producers, and then there is scammers. Its not the business. Its the Persons within the business you choose to deal with.. BUT im sorry but not all, but most producers are like the state D.A. There is no regulation or accountability at the production level And they can do what ever they want with no responsibility whatsoever because the contracts all put it on the artist. What about All the beats Ive bought from people that claimed they produced the music but come to find out they stole the beats Much much later? You say do the homework... How am I to know if you are selling me what you say it is? Because Ive lost thousands in my younger years in the business purchasing beats for an entire album I recorded that ended up the Producer stole every single one of the beats he sold me. Unless Ive got lease bag money from upcharging for everything or pre music or trap money how do I go about getting my money and recoup for all the loss I took on a 3 year project? Because they had a lot more money then me So court would just cost me more funds I dont have. And they would just continue the courts or appeal until I couldn't afford to prosecute any more. And look at the Ren and the Kujo situation right now. Kujo stole the sample for sic boi from a Bulgarian choir recording, Leased an unlimited license to ren. Ren got copyright claims and the song removed. The biggest song of his career. A song abut his auto immune battles and an important song to many that use music to heal. under my understanding, while Ren was in treatment for his sickness for some of the Issues he spoke on in the song, when the song first got distributed the distributer forgot to not use content ID, for litterally like a month or so and then Ren updated everything and gave credit to the original producer and the samples. Even though Ren had messaged his entire team not to use Content ID because it was a leased beat. Simple misunderstanding. Well now KUjo claims Ren broke the contract because of that. Admits he stole the sample and removed sic boi as leverage, Is demanding 3000 pounds and 15% of the new master residually and retroactively since the release. Ren had to pay I believe something stupid like 10k pounds to clear the sample. And now his career changing song has been removed from everywhere. THE PRODUCER IS THE THIEF AND THE LIAR, Yet Kujo about to pocket Rens royalties on the new master for a beat that he admittedly and knowingly stole the music for... Ren loses not only money but I know for a fact that that song means the world to not only him. but thousands of people. Not to begin with the tens of thousands he paid for the music video, to be treated like he didnt have rights to use the music and it looks like he stole it. IDK pretty fucked if you ask me. Kujo Makes a fat bag and isnt responsible for anything in this situation?! Hmmmmmm, seems awefully like Every major label Ive ever dealt with. Its not a Scam..... But its Scandalous as F*ck and a very covert narcistic way of conducting business. And thats just one example. Where is the artists recourse for such incompetency in the industry? Wheres the accountability?

If I knew leasing beats even existed when I was more dedicated as an artist/songwriter 10-15 years ago I probably would be poppin off right now! Instead, I decided to get into producing myself which took obviously a ton of time away from my actual passion (recording vocals/song writing etc.) It took me *YEARS* to finally get my instrumentals to the point where I felt like they were worthy of actually being released. So instead of releasing half a dozen albums or more in the last decade, I haven't released a single damn album! It's only been the last couple years that my instrumentals are finally at a level that I'd be happy to record/release. I had no idea you could even lease beats for so damn cheap until about a year ago! I only got into producing because I knew I'd never be able to afford to buy beats. Back in the early 2000's producers were selling (or attempting to sell) their beats for 2+ thousand dollars! Aint nobody got time for that! Now I'm here 40 years old and realizing I could release a ridiculously top end album for less than $2000 grand by simply leasing a bunch of beats from people that have dedicated their entire lives to producing beats! DAMN!

Those automated contracts on the beat leasing sites are the real scam, I once read one saying the producer has the sole right to copyright the new song made using the beat. So if you're a producer out here leasing beats you probably got a couple songs out here you can just copyright

leasing beats is a scam not just for these reasons. I think its unfair but also kinda smart that a prod can charge someone for a beats and then turn around and keep selling the same beat over and over. theres no 1of1 no authenticity just easy money
@DJPain12 ай бұрын
You can always buy custom beats or work with producers in your area who are in a position to invest all that time into you. Beat leasing doesn't stop you from doing that. So it's not a scam, it's just an arrangement you don't personally like.

What about the 10 year term on 99% of these (beatstars)licenses? This is the main reason I have recently been staying away from leases.
@DJPain12 ай бұрын
You really think we’re monitoring your usage of these beats? I can’t remember something 10 days later let alone 10 years 😂
@jayrobb46322 ай бұрын
@@DJPain1 So leave a takedown up to risk? We can say this or that, but the only thing that will hold up in a court of law is the license/agreement. The future use and monetization of the beat would be considered an infringement. Bad advice here.
@DJPain12 ай бұрын
@@jayrobb4632 Then just renew the license, that's the obvious answer. I don't know why you're mad at me for this lol

I hate leasing beats because when i shoot a music video and put it on youtube and use content id. the producer gets paid for something im paying money to promote and market. Also i ran into problems when trying to get music videos on tv.

I believe the issue that may come with sync is if a producer used a loop on a beat from a source that they can't remember exactly where it came from. Then they may have to track down that other 3rd party loop creator. It may be a little extra work but it's worth it.

@@ProdByWarrenKashh if they don’t know, they shouldn’t be selling it
