Im purely sample based for everything until i get real instruments to record in a studio. Damu the fudgemunk got me hooked on beats. I always wanted to be part of hip hop so I started rhyming at around 10 yrs old but didnt get more serious until 15 then when i got my sp202 i focused on beats more but lost interest as it was very limited on what i could do until i got a maschine mikro mk1. Honestly if it weren’t for my samplers id probably be outside dropping pieces. I could honestly say hiphop is part of my life one way or the other.

HEY - Dope video man! Ive been enjoying learning different techniques in beat-making. Self-taught since 2010, and it wasn't until 2017, when I got Logic, that my processed evolved. Now that I'm a certified audio engineer, it allows me to approach the process in a different way, and once again, Im looking to teachers to fill in the gaps. Im mainly a original/Loop based producer - Im interested in sampling as another tool in my kit. I dig your approach and appreciate how you break everything down. Thanks!!

I love starting my songs in so many diff ways, normally whatever I decide to mess around with first I’ll use as the base, whether it be keys and pads or a sample chop. But Iv noticed my songs with samples carry a vibe that is uniquely diff that something without starting with sampling, like a transmuted vibe morphed out of the song used for the sample, yet it’s entirely new.

Agreed you have to know the goal. If it's for an instrumental to be listened to as is it can be as busy as you want it. But, if it's meant for a vocalist to jump on you have to leave "room". Just imagine that the vocalist is another instrument track that you don't want to clash with what you're making. Also be aware the human voice occupies the same frequency as many mid-high instruments so you don't want too many of those in your track, worst case you may need to notch filter those frequencies a bit to allow space for vocals.

Samples (Zoom ST -224) and keyboard beats (Roland XP-80) - I actually have sampled myself dropping brooms, spoons and plastic totes - and making my own drums - and I’ll sample chords and sounds from my keyboard then mess with the filters to make it my own - also I have Resampled and mixed my own sounds along with the original sample to try n mask the sample from being too easily identifiable.... if any of that makes sense...

Yo! I do both but lean heavily on playing original work, as until recent years I didn’t have anything to sample with and was deftly afraid of copyright and all that lol. My biggest inspiration was always The Roots and various jazz groups (specifically Weather Report) and I grew up around musicians, so I learned from all of that. I think I disappointed a lot of them when I focused more on making video game music lol. Anyways, I’ve always hella admired and looked up to producers like Premiere, Dilla, Pete Rock, PUtS, Madlib, etc for just how genius they are at picking up sample ideas from damn near anywhere. Me and my homeboy have sessions where we’ll basically sit around listening to tracks and just picking out what samples are used and how lol. Love this channel and wish idve found it sooner, btw!
