This is absolute magic- I inherited a collection of 45s with this in it and at 12 (1981) I fell in love with it and at 49 still listen to it in my car and at work. Such a talented group here

Originally recorded in two parts (on May 21, 1940), and initially released on Columbia 35530. Drummer Ray McKinley is the vocalist...

Great find! Interesting to hear what's probably the original recording of this standard.

I hope it's the original since Daddy Slack is playing it (and co-wrote it)

In 1967 I used to do a drum "play along" to this and watch my baby daughter, Wendy, scrunch her face and bounce up and down while holding on to the side of her crib..................very entertaining! :)

Can you imagine the Andrews, Betty Hutton, Marion Hutton singing this with Bradley? The music was just rocking before Rock.

Everyone gives credit to elvis as the king. But he did not invent rock. Rock traces its roots back to the mid 1940s with tunes like this. The first true rock songs came out in 1948 or so. One of my favorites is sister rosseta tharpes Up around my head released in 48. Elvis, chuck, jerry, they were the second generation of rockers. But they get all the fame sadly.

@@ajtstvandmusicarchivechann1585 Mid 40's? This recording was made in Feb. 1940. And boogie woogie is from the 30's

@@ajtstvandmusicarchivechann1585 Did you know Elvis didn’t even write any of his songs. A real musician writes his own stuff

Can't find the lyrics @ my usual source, but they're pretty clear. And great swing music, too. (Swing, boogie-woogie, big band...I'm kind of tone deaf on the differences...if it jives & moves, I like it; even if it's from before I was born, so what!)

Boogie Woogie was written in 6/8 time, which is where ‘Eight to the bar’ comes from. Big Band applies to all music music with a large ensemble, usually eight or more musicians. Swing music was born in 1926 when a music critic describing the Bennie Goodman concert at Carnegie Hall in 1926. Writing his critique on the concert he said this new jazz really swings, or words to that effect.

It would have to be a musical reference, because otherwise, wtf would it mean? I'll meet you at the bar at eight, and if you beat me there, I'll buy you a drink? The early hipster slang was funny.

Back in the late 1930s and early 1940s my fiends and I were all "hooked" on eight 1/8 notes per bar boogie woogie style music (eight to the bar) :)
