Everything from his amazing balance to his very active framing of opponents to keep them off balance mid combination is bewildering to watch, it's like watching a fighter switch from sumo fundamentals to violent striking in the blink of an eye. I'm glad to see him succeed with such a commited style, it's honestly a sight to behold

Loved the sections at 5:42 about using constant controls/traps after striking and before striking to set them up. Although from a different sport, mayweather and duran also use a similar form of control/trapping to set up their punches. Mayweather uses a lot of hand traps, head control, and framing with the forearm to stop punches and off balance in order to keep him safe after and before initiating offence. Duran uses a lot of elbow, shoulder, & bicep traps, and guard manipulation to reduce the impact of punches(or stop punches), off balance the opponent, and to open up the guard for more offence(also uses frames sometimes). Both also use the jab consistently to pin the arm/glove, blind, and occupy the guard in order to set up offence or to close the distance with more safety. Of course both use tactics from each other and some tactics more than the other. All this to say that constant disruption through controls, trapping, and guard manipulation is extremely important to stay safe when pressure fighting and fighting in general. Most likely, you're not going to be able to react to every strike with a block, slip, roll, or pull. So, using more preventative measures through proactive disruptions like controls, trapping, and guard manipulation is extremely important.

Love your stuff. Absolutely want to see a longer breakdown of Superlek vs Rodtang. Also you should look up Samkor Kiatmontep. He was the progenitor of Superlek/Rodtang/Buakaw. In fact he trained Buakaw himself. He was a dominant fighter in the Golden Era of Muay Thai. He fought and beat all of the greats of that era multiple times, including Namsaknoi, Karuhat, Wangchannoi, and Saenchai (yes, that Saenchai). And he did it all just with his left kick. He'd just kick you endlessly, with legs like a pair of baseball bats--and there was nothing you could do to stop him. One of the greatest kickers in combat sports history. There's plenty of footage of him on KZbin, and I think Sylvie of 8LimbsUS has spoken with him. I'd love to see a breakdown of just how he was able to dominate in the Golden Era with just his left kick, and how his style echoes thru those of Buakaw, Rodtang, and Superlek...

Happy to finally find a fighter that I can relate too. I'm totally amateur of Muay Thai, training at home for the love of the sport and body mechanics. 9:09 I really hate that rodtang "knockdown", esspecially considering it arguably cost him the fight. If you look at other angles, you will see that both the elbow and the knee actually missed his head. In reality, he simply tripped or got shoved to the ground.

I think Superlek was mostly a backfoot fighter for majority of his career. He only turned into an aggressive pressure fighter after he came to ONE, primarily because ONE rule set favours aggression. So, that means he is a very adaptable fighter. Same for Nong O.
@TheModernMartialArtist2 ай бұрын
From memory he always seemed to be a front foot fighter who was also really great at moving backwards all the same, but it's been a while since I watched a full fight of his that wasn't at ONE so very possible you're right!
@zylumite2 ай бұрын
@@TheModernMartialArtist I guess it depends on the opponent. I have mostly seen his fights against punchers and clinchers, where he was primarily on the backfoot. Maybe against other technicians he might choose to be aggressive.

Hahaha That makes a whole lot of sense. Just to prove my point you're an uneducated casual. I will ask you a simple basic beginner question, (even though I already know you will get it wrong) so hopefully you man up by answering the question compared to other uneducated casuals who refuse to answer. What scores the most points and how is it scored in a Muay Thai fight?
