Honestly, I far prefer the story of DS2 to 1, and it took me a fair bit to realize, but the story of the Bearer of the Curse coming to Drangleic to cure their undeath, being told in the first moments of the game that they would forget and abandon that quest, and then for that to define the endings is perfect. Do you follow the path laid out for you by the Herald, and forsake your own goal to link the fire, something the previous king did not do, and prolong the Age of Fire yourself? Or, do you stay true to your original goal, forsake the throne, and pursue a true cure?

Dark Souls 2 could have been the strongest in the series were it not for the crippling development hell it had to wade through. The story is great, the gameplay, while imo is worse than the first, it's still pretty damn good, and the multiplayer was the best it'll ever be. It's a shame, what we could have had
@leithaziz2716
@leithaziz2716 Жыл бұрын
My issue has always been that the themes of DS2 are compelling, but in terms of what you're doing a motivation feels somewhat lacking. This is gonna be somewhat long, so if you (understandibly) find this comment too long, you can ignore me. This is mostly my thoughts and hopefully they don't stop you from liking said game any less. The last thing I wanna do is view my opinion as facts. I think back on something Mr. Vangeris brought up in his Dark Souls 2 commentary. Aside from breaking the curse, what's the driving force that's pushing you to do anything? The Emerald Herald will tell you to seek the four old ones and the king. After you find the king your next objective is to reach Aldia's Keep (which the game does not tell you about. It's just availlable now because you have the king's ring). Progression feels somewhat artificiall. In DS1, Oscar saves you in the Asylum and tragically dies soon after. He tells you that we're both undead and that we have a fate. We need to ring The Bell of Awakening to find out what that is. When reaching Firelink Shrine the crestfallen knight tells you that there's 2 bells and gives some advice on where they're located. After ringing both bells Frampt will show up and tell you your fate. He says that it is to succeed Gwyn and undo the curse of the undead, pushing you to find the Lordvessel in Anor Londo. After obtaining said vessel, he will send you to the kiln and tell you to seek powerfull souls that can satiate the vessel. After doing that you are tasked to kill Gwyn and link the flame, repeating the cycle. You have people constantly guiding you and giving you a clear goal that drives you to move forward. Granting Oscar's dying wish is a motivator to find the Bell of Awakening and link the flame, as that's the best way to repay him for setting you free. On subsequent playthroughs you can also meet Kathe who'll shed some light on Frampt and the truth behind the curse of the undead. In DS3 you show up to Firelink and are told to return the four Lords of Cinder to their thrones. Once that's completed you're told to link the fire. Very clear cut objectives. There's even NPCs directly tied with 3 of the 4 Lords that guide you towards them and gives you some insight on them. Hawkwood with the Abysswatchers, Anri with Aldritch and Siegward with Yhorm. If you want to do more you can talk with Yuria for a unique ending giving you a different perspective on how some people view being cursed/hollow. Characters like Emerald Herald and Aldia don't do much to guide you. The former will just tell you of something that exists and to seek it and not elaborate further, and the latter will share his philosophy with you (which is interesting to think about, but that doesn't necessarily tell you anything about what to do besides choosing a certain ending). This makes the experience feel lacking in focus. I'm not saying these games should spoon-feed you, but DS2 (to me) sometimes feels directionless, and being aware of the game's troubled development likely didn't help. Those are my thoughts, and if you've read through all of that, Thank You for reading.

@@Bubbly_Dragonthat’s not a fair argument. Ds1 is highly unfinished and even worse in the remaster, it’s massively janky with bad ai and empty maps yet is considered a masterpiece. @@leithaziz2716 bro did you like pay attention to literally anything in ds2? The land you’re in, you can’t leave bc of the curse. Your self you can’t remember, your family you’ve forgotten. The only way to get your life back is to cure the curse. Far more compelling than “we’ve arbitrarily picked you to be the chosen one who does things we’ve given you no reason to want to do” or “same thing but bc some guy said it’d make his family happy” in ds2 it’s “my entire identity is slowly being erased and I have forgotten my family and memories that made me who I am, I have to cure the curse”. A lot of your criticisms apply vastly more to ds3 if anything. Or even bloodborne. In bloodborne the only explanation you get is “just enjoy the hunt” Also time frampt example is unfair. It’s not only narratively lazy plot progression but ds2 did the same thing but better in the form of Aldia who provides meaningful dialogue about the story and your place in it. Providing more of a choice in the player then the shallow “evil frampt vs good frampt”

@@leithaziz2716 but, the lack in motivation, or the understanding of the motivation is part of the point. there was a woman and a child in the intro, but they fade away. we know nothing of them. maybe they were important to our character before, but that is already lost. not being told directly what to do and go is purposeful. because this is the game that shows you how going hollow affects the people. not the world, not the civilizations, the individual it's the game that better shows what going hollow would feel like. you know you gotta do a thing, you want to do it, but why? why go? why follow cryptic stories about how we can get healed? why keep going? why not just let go? I don't even know where to go... and the character beats the curse (or just links the fire) because just wanting to not go hollow is enough. it is exemplified in so many of the npcs, lucatiel desperately trying to get us to remember her name before she herself forgets. the stone seller who forgets who her father is, while he blacksmiths right next to her. the man near the death counter who sees no hope in even trying anything. this games asks you to hold onto the smallest piece of information that may heal you, because that is all the character has

Despite all its flaws, Dark Souls 2 holds a special place for me. It was my first fromsoft experience and it nearly destroyed my desire to play soulsborne games because of the difficulty :D But the story and the music. It honestly capture me, I hated the gameplay but I loved the rest of DS2 (Don't worry, my next experience was Bloodborne and it completely made me a soulsborne fan) The one saving grace that made me come back to DS2 was Majula. Even after I gave up, I'd occasionally turn the game on and just explore Majula, listening to the music. Out of all the games, Majula feels so different. Dark Souls 1 hub are the ruins of an old kingdom, grand and fallen apart. Dark Souls 3 are at this peak of a cliff, with great thrones for lords who're deserting the cause. Bloodborne is a realm made to the visage of a workshop that belongs to hunters long past, using memories to act as a prison. Even Elden Ring, a strange timeless pocket realm for rest based on the capital kingdoms barracks. But Majula? It's just a village. A small settlement that happened to be at the borders of a kingdom. It's not some grand fallen civilization, not some secret dimension. It was just a humble home. Abandoned. Forgotten. Even the music of the other games makes each one feel some kind of fall from grace, some area that used to be grandiose. Now fallen to ruin. Yet Majula feels more sombre, less grandiose and more melancholy. Like returning to your old childhood house only to find its in shambles. Memories make it feel so nostalgia on how it used to be cozy but now it feels sad. The memories are happy but that's all there is now. Just memories. It was a village, full of life and people who were connected to the life of the kingdom but lived their own day to day stories, the royals and monarchs and gods felt distant and bigger, so much more than just some humble cottage by the cliffside. Too quaint to be in some vast kingdoms city. It's hard to explain Majula apart from just... Home.

Dark souls 2 would be my favorite Dark Souls game if it wasn’t for the third game’s dlc chain. It shows us a beautiful world, slowly and gently burning down into nothing. Even the memory of these beautiful places and people is gradually lost to it. It’s a tragedy in quiet verse rather than an epic in an opera house, and that makes it special to me.

To put the endings in a nutshell: Taking the throne links the flame and continues the cycle of decay-- of a world rising from the ashes of the old only to rot and die, for another chosen to link the fire and start the cycle anew. Leaving the throne ends the cycle. Ends everything. Without the flame, the world falls into darkness, a final decay it will never awaken from.
@sincodemayo
@sincodemayo Жыл бұрын
Well, yes and no. The thing is, the first ending is inevitable. Whether you link the flame or not, eventually somebody will. We've seen that the flame can go out and re-ignite again. The second ending, however, is where things really get interesting. In this case, the second ending includes the crown of three kings having been assembled, which means that the bearer of the curse can live outside of hollowing, and outside the cycle. The world still "plunges into dark", which really just means mankind is able to flourish for awhile, which is exactly how DS2 even happens in the first place. But the first ending will still happen whether you do it or not. We see this through DS3, of course.

The summons ruined one of the best things about this dlc. At 15:53 the "invader" was supposed to follow you around to then backstab you, its the same npc invader on the second dlc, the one that runs away into a cursed tower filled with enemies.
