My Parents got Rubber Soul as a Christmas Present to me and my Brother. Capitol Records Release. “In My Life” is one of their most memorable songs. George Martin WAS the 5th Beatle. lol I knew he played the middle but didn’t know the genius behind his recording it half speed. I always liked his riff at the very end of it. 12 Years Ago I made a CD of my Daughter’s favorite Songs…old and new for her 21st Birthday. Her favorite Beatle Song is “In My Life.” It’s a multi generational Song…I’m really enjoying your longer versions here! Great Job! 👏 👏👏!

I'm playing and tracking this song. "for no one" just me, its such a reflection back of my own life as I look back at 77 years old. As a 15 year old, my girl friend and I saw the lads play live at Olympia Stadium in Detroit (45 minutes and my mom drove us downtown and dropped us off at Olympia (where the Red Wings played hockey). I was utterly in love with John as he wore glasses - I was just a geeky awkward girl with bad eyes. No one knew that John was married to another Cynthia (my name) ha! When I say we saw the Beatles, I'm not kidding - you really could not hear them- we screamed and cried and screamed some more - full on Beatlemania. Oh we did the same at the Dearborn movie theater in Dearborn Michigan too, for "A Hard Days Night" Screaming so loud that they stopped the movie and told us to be quiet! Imagine that!. It was quite a time, now I look back and play and sing and record John's "In my life".... Life goes on, obla dee, Obla daa

No wonder The Beatles loved George Martin. That man knew his stuff & saved The Beatles from falling apart earlier in their career. If I'm not mistaken. Beatles engineer Norman Smith has a big hit in 1972 as *"Hurricane Smith"* with *"Oh Babe. What Would You Say".*

In My Life was as good as anything Ray Davies or Pete Townshend were writing at the time. In the UK Rubber Soul did not get enthusiastic reviews by most of the music journalists at the time. The Beatles were still seen in terms of a Merseybeat group and totally ignored how the group were moving away from being a "pop band". It was only after the release of Revolver in 1966 that the likes of Melody Maker and the NME realised how much The Beatles were far ahead musically.

You need to be an excellent singer to do justice to that song and John's vocal embraces the melody with love and nostalgia. In Pete Shotton's book he recalls being at John's house one night when Paul and John were working on the song with a couple of acoustic guitars. So it seems Paul did collaborate a little. If you havent read that I encourage you to look it up.

After Lennon's death Sir Mccartney stated that a lot of songs we thought were John's, were actually his. For me it was a shock to find out that In My Life was actually written by Sir Paul. Both lyrics and melody were his doing. He sent John away to smoke a smoke and wrote the entire song in like half an hour.

Hmmm. Rubber Soul is a bit overrated (several mediocre tracks while others like the Stones, the Who and the Kinks were eclipsing them lyrically and sonically. I'm afraid same could be said of In My Life. It's a lovely song, and George Martin's piano break really lifts it to another level, but otherwise the arrangement is a bit plodding. The electric guitar riff in particular is pretty dull and, I think, does little to tell the story. Judy Collins' version is wonderful, but this is one of a handful of Beatles' songs where their recording didn't really do the song justice.
