In addition to the posters you mention, I also remember my local radio station (WLS, Chicago) broadcasting commercials for the album. These commercials made it sound like this was an important event. I recall an announcer saying something like, "A year in the making!!" Partly because of this ad campaign I was very excited for the album and bought my first copy the day it hit stores in the US.

Regarding the title, I’ve read that McCartney originally intended to call the album and title song “Doctor Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” but upon being told that there was an American soft drink called Doctor Pepper, he changed it to Sergeant Pepper. I guess by now there’s so much lore attached to the album, as well as to the Beatles, that all sorts of stories are going around.

I heard it a little differently. Mal asked Paul for the salt and pepper and he thought Mal said Sergeant Pepper. Yes it would be hard to believe that Mal wouldn't know what S and P shakers were. John later had 2 cats, Salt and Pepper the black one being for former, the white the latter 😎 Then they were reading mail from lonely fans, and Paul said "we're nothing, but a lonely hearts club band". Of course he'd already written Eleanor Rigby with "all the lonely people".

Two comments. #1: I've always enjoyed what the inspiration was for BEING FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR. KITE. It was an old Victorian circus that John Lennon discovered,and, from that, he created all those wonderful characters in the song(my favorite is HENRY THE HORSE). #2: It was the only Beatles album that didn't release a particular song as a single.❤❤❤😊😊😊

Terrific listcicle, enjoyed it! I remember a British documentary on the 30th anniversary of making of the album; Martin and the three surviving Beatles talked about how they experimented around with the instrumentation and recording. As for the name though, McCartney said he was going for an old-timey Old West vibe, Dr Feelgood's Magic Elixir Traveling Show sort of thing.

Anyone who has watched Paul play bass and any other bass player will know that Paul is really a guitar player. He plays the bass just as he would play a guitar, using his thumb before doing any finger picking and playing down on the strings. Bassists use their fingers, rarely using their thumb at all, and pluck up (towards their face) on the strings. There may be other bass players who play like Paul, but I have never seen one. Great video with a lot of stuff I didn't know. One thing that amazes me is the amount of work George Martin did on this and other albums. I hope he got royalties for all that work!

😮😮.... not really, this sounds interesting on paper, but untrue in reality...🎸I've played both instruments and know the Beatles by ❤️ . Guitar and bass playing have not much in common except you use amplified strings. The approach, the sound and feel are very distinctive 🌬️ Some bass players are more up front, such as Entwistle (The Who) or JJ Burnell (Stranglers), but Paul plays both amazingly with his unique melodic style 😊

I think Hitler was also supposed to be on the cover, but that was squashed for obvious reasons. A bit of trivia to add to number 10 - Paul was a fan of the names of West Coast US bands like big Brother and the Holding Company and Quicksilver Messenger Service: convoluted mouthfuls that conjured colorful images. Sergeant pepper’s lonely hearts club band was a play of sorts on those names.

In order to have the celebrities on the Sgt. Pepper cover, The Beatles wrote letters asking permission to have a celebrities likeness on the album cover. One such letter went out to movie screen legend Mae West. Mae replied "Why would I want to be in a lonely hearts club??" which was probably a no from her, but after The Beatles sent her additional personal letters asking her to use her photo on the album cover, she said yes.

I remember hearing "Sgt. Pepper's" for the first time in 1967. I was a Beatles fan and enjoyed their music very much. However when I saw the cover of "Sgt. Pepper's" I was taken aback at how they looked. I thought, what happened to these guys?? Then when I heard the music I wasn't connecting to it. I remember being fascinated with "A Day In The Life" but the rest of the album wasn't hitting me in the right spot. It's interesting that to this very day I don't much care for "Sgt. Pepper's". I consider it to be my least favorite Beatles album and I still consider it overrated. That first impression of the album never quite left me. I will always feel "Rubber Soul" to be the Beatles best offering.

Hi! And THANKS for the view and comment! So…. Here’s the deal. I knew that this subject would likely come up from the fan base, but I deliberately avoided getting into it because it would slow the pace of the video and drag it off subject, which is an important facet to me as a producer of the video. You are correct, from one viewpoint anyway. But The bottom line is, there is no single reason for the disparity; royalties certainly were a factor and were only one of them. There were also marketing, technical, cultural, and legal factors that figured in. The whole discussion could get rather subjective rather quickly, so I thought it best to leave it out of this video.

Guitar Trooper, I was so disappointed that Capitol Records did not release a Beatles Singles Box Set on December 26,1963 the 60th Anniversary of Capitol's original release date of the "I Want To Hold Your Hand" Single. I GMailed the C.E.O. at Capitol Records back in September, 2023! She never responded! To make things more frustrating, the Capitol Records building is now closed to the public for two years due to renovations! I wanted to personally lobby the staff at Capitol Records! I wanted a Capitol Records box set, which they've never released, to cover the period from "I Want To Hold Your Hand" to "Lady Madonna" with the original picture sleeves! As you know, that was the period The Beatles were strickly on the Capitol Records label in America. This was pre Apple and Yoko Ono who I find repulsive! As a matter of fact, the last time The Beatles had fun in the studio was on February 11,1968 while recording "Hey Bulldog" and filming a Promotional film for "Lady Madonna". After that, Yoko Ono entered the frame and it was truly a slow miserable death! I refuse to listen to anything post "Hey Bulldog" especially John's love paeans to that shameless tramp and homewrecker Yoko Ono! Just think! Ono's got all of John's estate which she refused to share with Julian! Julian had to sue her! I have the deepest admiration for John Charles Julian Lennon! He is such a genuinely good and decent man!

Guitar Trooper, how many songs does George Harrison actually play Guitar solos on Pepper? I am aware Paul McCartney plays the Guitar solos on "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Good Morning Good Morning." I was disappointed when I recently found out that George Harrison also doesn't play the Lead Guitar on "Rain"! It was actually John and Paul on Guitars and Ringo on Drums on Rain's Take 5 Rhythm track. I always believed "Rain" was George Harrison's finest moment on Lead Guitar. By the way the Giles Martin Rain Take 5 Rhythm track on the re-release of Revolver is much too fast! It's ridiculous! I have a bootleg and it's at the correct speed. In retrospect, I believe Paul McCartney should have been The Beatles Lead Guitarist. George was mainly a chordal player. He couldn't improvise a Guitar solo to save his life! George should have been on Bass.
@the_guitar_trooper
@the_guitar_trooper 11 ай бұрын
Oh gosh - I never tried to discover that! To be sure, George Harrison did play bass occasionally in the studio , but then, so did John. Once the group moved away from their earlier stuff, I think that George H. had an increasingly more difficult time with the lead parts.

Quotes by GEORGE HARRISON (Subject: Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band) ~ "To me it was kind of a bit tiring, or a bit boring because, I mean, I had a few moments in there that I enjoyed, but generally I didn't like that album much. My heart was still in India you know." "Sgt. Pepper was the one album where things were done slightly differently. A lot of time...we weren't allowed to play as a band so much. It became an assembly process ~ just little parts and then overdubbing. After [the India trip ~ September 14,1966~October 22,1966] everything else seemed like hard work. It was a job like doing something I didn't really want to do and I was losing interest in being "fab" at that point."
