Yes, in Kalevala the Bee is the life giver, they can bring something back to life with the honey from the Gods. Many Finnish bands uses Kalevala as some inspiration for their songs, Amorphis uses it probably the most, they have many concept albums just concentrating on one character of Kalevala. They even cooperate with a poet Pekka Kainulainen who writes them poems or short stories from Kalevala mythology which they then translate in English to fit the songs. J.R.R Tolkien was heavily influenced by Kalevala, when he was a young undergraduate he even started to write a short story in English about Kullervo, one of the tragic characters in Kalevala. He never fully finished it but it's been released later as unfinished.

My husband's band opened for 2 Amorphis shows back in 2017 (Calgary and Edmonton), and they are true professionals. Their sound check was clean and efficient, and of course they put on incredible performances. My favourite songs are a bit older - "Sampo" and "Skyforger" would be amazing!

This is an amazing band a must have on your collection, been listing to them since the 90's and till this day, never disappointed. One of my top favourite band. Saw them live and the concert ground was shaking under my feet of how powerful Tomi's vocals were it was awesome :) they were perfect live and so was the vocals, so worth watching live and can't wait to watch them live again. I would also like to recommend band called Mokoma (mentioned here previously). They sing in finnish but they are definitely a stable in finnish metal scene and has been for decades. Sydänjuuret is a great song.

The song is about the story of a bee who comes to the underworld, to bring life in the banks of the river Tuonela, where many skeletons lie. That's my understanding but I know it's based on the Kalevala. It's a great great book, I highly recommend reading it to understand Amorphis' influences :)

You have found another Finnish metal band that is my favorite. And interesting information, Marko Hietala (yes ..., Nightwish's Marko!) has produced a few older Amorphis albums ... And gave Tomi Joutsen tips on singing during those albums. As you had researched, this band draws ideas from the Finnish poetry collection Kalevala in several songs. Its currently known poems were collected in the early 19th century. The youngest of them are about 700 years old. The oldest poems ..., no one knows. But this style of poetry became common in the Finnish-Karelian-Estonian region 2000-3000 years ago. And it can be said that the arrival of Christianity gradually killed it out of Finland. During the 16th century it died out of Western Finland, it was still found in Eastern Finland and Karelia until the beginning of the 20th century. (Guess what area Tuomas Holopainen from Nighwish comes from ?, Yes, from Eastern Finland and he could write absolutely brilliant Finnish poems. One wonders if there were ancient poetry singers in his lineage.) Every Finn "has to" get to know the Kalevala at school ...

Great reaction video. I've loved Amorphis since I discovered them when I about 15, in 2007. Great band. I think you should react to The Golden Elk from them next, is a bit of a slower more elegant song, but probably my favourite song from The Queen of Time. 🤘

I am a huge fan of the "2nd Amorphis Generation" with Tomi Jousten. Started with the LP "Eclipse". one of my introductions to heavy metal music^^. I always like your reaction to it But also the "old classics" are fantastic. As a tipp for you: Headphones, their "Tales from the Thousend Lakes" - LP and do the seawalk in Vancouver during sunrise. Perfectly ;-)

Great reaction, thanks. Characters from Kalevala exist on old Nightwish songs too, for example Elvenpath. Overall, I'd like to see more reactions of the older production. The sound quality in the old (~2006) video clips is usually rather poor, so reacting to the studio versions is sometimes better. And Thomas often seems to hide some surprises in the songs, you aren't necessarily able to hear them live. But for now, thanks indeed for the Amorphis song. You do know they are supposed to play on the Nightwish tour (hopefully) in the spring?
