PHSW is to Tengu Plant format as CRV is to Goat and TSHD to Edison. So glad to see this format getting more love as Edison has exploded in popularity and Goat continues to receive new players from modern YGO, but both lack a certain *something* after a while. Tengu Plant is the only one of the 3 where I can play Mystic Piper-centric decks, one of my absolute favorite cards.

Amen, this is probably my favourite format in Yugioh, when I first heard about Goat Format and how it'd been gaining a following I tried looking for videos on some Synchro/early Xyz stuff as I remembered that being when the game was the most fun for me personally, at the time I was sad that I really wasn't finding much on the subject, so it's nice to see it get some recognition :p

@@midshipman8654 Edison is good too, but a lot of my favourite 5D's stuff comes from the later half of that era, stuff like Trishula, Shooting Star and Quasar, Adoration and Trinity, a lot of the plant support, and I could keep going, but that's why I'm personally more partial to a format a bit later in the timeline like this one.

I really love this Format, it´s my by far favorite. ^^ I loved to play T.G. Stun and Agents back in the days, but I also played Dark World and Six Sam during that time. All of of the decks and strategies you´ve shown are really nostalgic to me. Great Video, it felt like a step into a time machine xD I recognized that there is a Trance Archfiend in the Dark World deck, which you can´t play in that Format since it´s from Order of Chaos xD

The formats that I enjoyed the most over my years of playing have been 2011 sept, 2012 shock lock, and all of 2014. Nationals for 2014 could definitely be put in the same tier as 2011 for being a format with great diversity. I personally really enjoyed 2012 windup shock lock format though because i played dark world and the windup matchup was so easy for me. Early 2014 was a really cool format too because it was really diverse as well. A regional I topped had bujinn, first fist, mermail, infernity, glad beast, and dragon ruler all top. The second half of 2014 was very iconic with the release of ba, sknights, and shaddolls. I suggest checking out all of these formats. Great times in yugioh!

I also have a lot of nostalgia for 2014. I remember my roommate and I grinded out games all the time. He was experimenting with dragon ruler builds and I was playing zombies. With malicious at 3, mezuki at 3, and plaguespreader at 2, it was a good time. I used to open up with pyramid turtle into Endless Decay which, if they crashed on turn 1, meant he had 4000 attack. And then trap stun into zombie master, lavalchain, dump malicious, and once I got a plague I pump out two level 8 synchros. and if I got real lucky I drew return from the different dimension which was back at 1 lol. Ahhh, good times. I don't even know what the best deck was, there were a number of dragon builds, mermails, I played against madolches, bujins. Also soul charge came out which entirely changed the format (and helped me a lot). I think I quit shortly after, though, so I don't remember if I liked late 2014 since I felt it was powercreeping too much and my zombie deck would be worthless =/ so I sold it. but it was fun times. i liked that back and forth yugioh. Back then it usually took me a few turns to set up - get a zombie in grave, draw plague or malicious, either draw trap stun or bait out their traps, and once I was all prepped then I'd combo out a board and either win in the next couple turns or lose. I guess I am that old crusty bitch who dislikes current yugioh, but nowadays people shit out a board in 1 turn, despite hand traps, and then stop you from even playing. Like, I used to think rescue rabbit into laggia was oppressive, but jesus

Piper Chaos is hella fun, and you have access to Meklord Emperor Wisel in this format, which can be devastating when dropped at the right time. I recommend checking out the Decade of Duels Discord, which is largely dedicated to this format. I also recommend subscribing to Who Needs Meta because they play this format a lot.

For years I've said this is my favorite format of all time. More than Goats, Reaper, Edison, Shaddoll/Qli, or anything else. Only I never had bumped into anybody else that thought the same but I'm glad I'm not alone. To me during this format they fixed about all the glaring problems of the Synchro era like Trishula, Mass Driver, Fishborg, etc, without pushing their respective decks out of viability. Even the newly introduced T.G. and recently hit Plants felt evened out. I could play anything from Ojamas to Flamvells or even frigging Crystal Beasts or Assault Modes and give a fight and feel like I had a fun time. The Xyz mechanic was introduced with good cards that didn't yet break them up (Utopia, Gachi, N 17, Leviair were all awesome). I don't think early Xyz spam like the Wind Up loop was a thing yet. To me soon after, the Xyz era was about to make a powercreep jump bigger than anything the game had seen prior to that point in history, and so this format was the last time I felt like I could make anything Legacy work out and experiment without too much OTK. I'm very happy to have stumbled upon this video.

For chaos strategies, there's also twilight and chaos plants. As for other, lesser known decks this format with varying viability are flamvellsworn, worms, morphtronics (lol) zombie plant, and even pure scrap.

Worth noting that agents had MANY variations in this format in the main deck. Some opted to run more traps, some were chaos oriented like the list you posted, some went with Herald of Orange Lights over Veilers, etc. Even looking at the Top 32 of Toronto you can see how much people were customizing the deck to how they thought it should best be run. I really appreciate this content, Edison has finally started to get some consistent content but Tengu Plants format was largely left alone besides the Plant deck everyone has known about for many years.

I recall playing it at the time and managing to put together a somewhat decent Infernity deck. It was pretty awesome when I didn't brick As for Infernity, can Archfiend come back at 2 ? It's been 10 years you know, even with Sage coming out I don't think it's really gonna break the metagame apart

Just as a testament to how cool this format is: Tengumania 2 (which happened this weekend) was won by a Mist Valley Falcon beatdown stun brew. It’s a sweet list, and it shows how this format has so much room for creativity.

For the Dark world list, trance archfiend is not legal in the september 2011 tengu plant format, it was released in ORCS.

Just a heads-up: That Dark World deck is illegal in this format. Trance Archfiend was released in Order of Chaos, which followed Photon Shockwave. It’s a relatively easy fix, though, since you can replace it one-for-one with Fabled Raven.

One thing I do want to point out on this is how important Maxx C is to the format. Your deck has to have a viable stopping point if hit with Maxx C. There's a big reason decks that want to push through it side Debunk. Also turn player priority really hurts the viability of Veiler.

so, what would you say are the pros and cons comparing this to edison? I remember really liking playing the (sometimes bricky) agents. I remember everyone having to play tengu due to how incomparable its card advantage was.

I think that when you want to play a mirror then Tengu Plant is far better than any of the Edison mirror matches, and I think there are a number of cool rogue options like Scrap, Piper, TG, etc. that don’t exist in Edison. But all in all I think it’s personal pref, the existence of hand traps in the format is 2011s greatest weakness in comparison to Edison.

I mean, between goat and edison is like 5 years, so the feel is pretty distinct. though I guess its comparable to reaper format in that sort of way.

@@YGO_Renaissance this is an incredibly subjective take. the unknown variables that hand traps create is a different game in terms of reads/counterplay in comparison to a trap centric game. hand traps is a big part of the reason people prefer edison, having to play into concealed interruption at a wide scale, especially cards as swingy as maxx c can be a con for some.

Is junk doppel bad ? I ve always heard about the deck (it was famous) but its not on your list . Also is pure agents superior to t.g. the variant ? Finally , why not rescue rabbit present in glad ?it helps with swarming esp for herk

Rescue rabbit is PHSW which isn’t a legal set in this format. Junk Doppel I really like but didn’t include just for time’s sake and bc of how similar it is to Tengu Plant. Pure Agent, Chaos Agent and TG Agent all have their advantages and honestly I think it’s mostly player pref

I'm back into it, but I'm left really confused most times as to how the new stuff and archetypes work. Luckily Goat is a fairly popular format, but I kind of miss synchro spam.

I’m surprised Scraps weren’t on the list of competitive rogue decks. Evan Vargas really stomped a lot of decks with Scraps with his losses admitting to misplays as opposed to the deck itself. Made excellent use of Fiendish Chain, CotH, and Dark Coffin

Generally people play with the pre errata versions of cards, but you can use newer copies ofc, just try and remember the older text to keep it accurate!

@@Arturomiguel-kd5bu HEROes weren’t as popular until Order of Chaos. Blade Armor Ninja single-handedly made Bubble Beat an amazing deck. But they definitely existed before then. Super Poly is great at disrupting a lot of decks, Gemini Spark and Hero Blast are strong with Neos Alius, and Abs Zero and The Shining are powerhouses. Plus, you still have access to Future Fusion and Vision HEROes Adoration and Trinity.

Hero Beatdown Nordics Malefics Worms Every single one of these decks except Lightsworn made top 32 at a YCS at least once. There is no question March 2011 had more deck diversity because TGU was not playable. Edit: I'm not saying Sept 2011 is a bad format, but it doesn't have as much diversity. Sept 2011 is probably a better format if you are one of the players who prefers Heavy Storm to be legal.

@Sleepy YGO I haven't looked at YCS results as deeply from Sept 2011 but I would expect fewer unique tops because of a faster format where Heavy Storm is Legal and Royal Oppression is banned. TGU makes deck diversity and tech cards basically fall off a cliff because every deck is going to want to splash 3TGU + Sangan instead of something more creative. I think BLS is too strong of a card and prefer just having 3 Chaos Sorcs being legal. I also prefer heavy-less formats because with Heavy being legal Starlight road becomes a sacky card and slower formats in general are more interactive and thus, skill-based. March 2011 Pre-XYZ should become the Standard Plant Synchro format imo and is the the retro format I play along with goats. However, to each their own.

But of course to each their own, I certainly understand the argument against TGU however, your points are perfectly valid, to each their own indeed
