I am a huge fan of Joni Mitchell. Try her song "Little Green" about her daughter she gave up for adoption. What makes Joni so remarkable is her lyrics. Her voice is incredible, guitar, piano, but her lyrics are phenomenal. Also, "The Circle Game" is one you should check out.

Oh Joni; we are not worthy! She had broken up with Graham Nash (of Crosby, Stills, & Nash). She went on a long road trip to self reflect. As a result she wrote River and all the songs for her iconic album “Blue.” It is considered to be a masterpiece. I recommend that you review “Carey” from that album. The song is about her experience in Greece. It’s a great deal of fun. I also recommend that you review “Free Man in Paris” which she wrote about David Geffen. That song is from the fantastic album “Court and Spark.” Joni is still performing and she is more popular than ever.

This is a most loved song from her "Blue" album that is very highly regarded by critics as one of the best ever by a female artist. She was not interested in hits but one that made the Top Ten was "Help Me". Also very special are her version of "Woodstock", which she wrote and gave to Crosby, Stills and Nash for a very different sounding version that you have heard, and her 2000 version of "Both Sides Now", very different from her version from 30 years earlier. If you are looking for "masterpieces", these last two will not disappoint you.

Both are really talented, their voices are pure and focused, they both write from personal experience, and they both influenced lots of musicians (including me). In France They Kiss On Main Street 9. The Hissing Of Summer Lawns 10. Black Crow 11. Don't Juan's Reckless Daughter 12. Come In From The Cold 13. How Do You Stop 14. Turbulant Indigo 15. Urge For Going 16. Cold Blue Steel And Sweet Fire 17. Hejira 18. Come To The Sunshine (Live on TV Series Mon Pays, Mes Chansons 1966) 19. The Circle Game 20. Dark As A Dungeon Honorable mentions go to the song For The Roses, and every single song on Blue is amazing and should be heard. Ultimately, it would be a challenge to throw a stone and hit a bad Joni Mitchell song (although pre-1980 was her heyday, and her voice post-1990 sounds very different and overall much older due to being a lifelong smoker and having polio as a child).

Yes, this is a somber Christmas track, but for many, the Holiday season isn't all joyous. I'd recommend listening to Sarah McLachlan's cover of this song - it's beautiful! Another song I heard you might like is "Little Green". Mitchell has been open about her experience giving up a child for adoption in the 1960s, and many details from the song align with her personal history. Mitchell's daughter, Kilauren Gibb, was indeed adopted by the Gibb family and grew up in a different environment than Mitchell's early life. Joni Mitchell's ability to weave personal experiences into her music is one of the reasons why she is considered one of the greatest singer-songwriters of her generation. "Little Green" is a poignant and introspective song that reflects on the difficult choices she faced during that period of her life. It's a testament to her songwriting skill that she could capture such personal and emotional moments in her music, creating a connection with her audience.

As others have pointed out, Joni is truly an artist (she started with visual arts from childhood.. primarily oil painting until the 1980's when she worked with acrylics for a few years before returning to oils. Every album cover that isn't a photo, is HER artwork. :D (she's painted probably hundreds of paintings of various styles, has had a few gallery showings) And she produced most of her own albums as well, further enhancing HER ART in the music. D Her first album released in early 1968 as I recall, and last album of new/original material released in 2007. As others pointed out, her health challenges from surviving polio and other misc. stuff, heavy smoking since age 9 or so, and wear and tear of touring, ...and back then, especially the self-taught musicians didn't know as much as they do now re: preventing injury to vocal chords etc.. All that, along with aging, resulted in changes to her vocal range, and other vocal aspects, but she developed new ways of using the voice she had in the 1990's, as can be noted in her Grammy-winning album Turbulent Indigo in 1994 (that album addresses a variety of social injustices/tragedies as well as the personal reflection type songs) It's been said that for every occasion, every mood/emotion, there's a Joni Mitchell song to fit it, and that's pretty accurate! :D Over 20 albums, including 2 albums of re-recorded songs of hers plus a few of her favorite "standards" with full orchestra which provides yet another "flavor" to her music.. :D *And the recent series of Archival materials (so far, 3 sets of 5 CD's each) has provided some new/additional unique and interesting versions of familiar songs (demos, live performances etc) and at least ONE song she'd recorded but never put on an album..

this song is from her album BLUE. i have watched reactors listen to the opening of the same titled song BLUE and begin to cry. the BLUE album was a watershed work and established J.M. as a writer/musician of tremendous talent. every song on that album gives the listener a peek into J.M.'s life, including the song Little Green which hinted at the baby daughter she gave up for adoption. Joni Mitchell has been a huge force in the music business and changed her style many times. she didn't care what people thought about the directions she took - she took no prisoners. decades of smoking changed her voice dramatically and in 2015 she suffered a brain aneurysm that damn near killed her. it has taken years to regain a semblance of her former life. she remains revered by musicians and fans alike and has been honored many times. there is no one like her.

Folks have already recommended a lot of great songs for you to explore. I would mention her song "Woodstock," because I know you're a fan. Her uptempo songs folks have mentioned like Carey, Big Yellow Taxi, and Raised on Robbery have a more uplifting mood. Joni's career is still going strong. She moved from her folk sound to a more jazz-based feel over the years, so her later recordings didn't get as much mainstream radio airplay. She had some serious health issues in 2015, but is back and doing live performances again, often with singer Brandi Carlisle. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and received Kennedy Center Honors in 2021. ;o)

Nevertheless, every Joni album from Song To A Seagull to Hejira are masterpieces.

@@dggydddy59 Agree with you, For The Roses tends to get overlooked, but for me it's her best album

I’m not old enough to have seen her during her time, but I’ve been lucky enough to see her twice (recently) for her Joni Jams, at The Gorge and The Hollywood Bowl…seeing a legend like her was everything!

My absolute all-time favorite singer-songwriter with over 19 studio albums to her decades long career which came to a halt when she suffered an aneurysm in 2015. After a long recovery, she's been able to perform again in 2023 in a limited way at the age of 80. From her earlier folk days, I suggest "Song to a Seagull," "Cactus Tree," "Woodstock" (check out the live performance), "Conversation," "Blue," "California," "Case of You," "Carey," "Last Time I Saw Richard," "Rainy Night House"; from her folk-rock-jazz style, "Help Me," "Court and Spark," People's Parties," "Car on a Hill," "Edith and the Kingpin," "Woman of Heart and Mind," "Your Turn Me On I'm a Radio," The Hissing of Summer Lawns," "Shades of Scarlet Conquering," "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire"; from her full-on jazz style, "Hejira," "Amelia," "Coyote".... (Her live concert album 'Miles of Aisles' (1974) with back up group the L.A. Express contain many of these songs.) There are so many masterpieces and gems throughout her career that have a way of piercing the mind and soul of the listener. Enjoy!

Joni has so much material. Her debut album was in 1968, her most recent in 2007. 19 albums, and everyone of them is worth a listen. If I were to list all the songs you 2 should listen to it would be 30 or 40 titles long. But here's an interesting tidbit. Robert Plant wrote the song Going To California (from Led Zeppelin 4) for Joni after hearing her song California, from the same album River is from from, Blue. You should react to both songs, maybe on the same day.

"Woodstock," "Free Man in Paris," "Morning Morgantown," and her cover of Elvis's "You're so Square."

She was asked if she knew that this song had become a christmas song. She said "why should people who are sad at Christmas not have a song?"

Nice reactions, kids. Really cool you're enjoying and appreciating Mitchell's music this much. As for not getting more requests for her, remember, there are literally droves of fantastic musical acts to pull from for over a century. That said, I highly recommend most anything from her 1st 8 albums. Favs include "A Case of You", "For Free", "The Jungle Line", "Chelsea Morning", Raised On Robbery, Blue, and "Cactus Tree".

Give yourselves a treat. There is a video of a live performance with Joni singing “California” from a BBC show in 1970. An added bonus is she’s playing a dulcimer (the instrument she played on “Case of You”). Her vocals are amazing! There is another live video (I believe from the same BBC show) where she sings her song “Woodstock”, (which Crosby/Stills/Nash would cover later), but Joni’s version is incomparable. 👍

Brilliant songwriter covered by more singers than I can enumerate. 🔥🔥 Prince covered her song, "A Case of You". All the paintings you saw in the video were hers. 😉💞 as for her career, last year she sang with Brandi Carlile in the Joni Jam which was a tribute to her after recovering for the past few years from a brain aneurysm. 😳👍😌

Hey Guys, Joni has a Vietnam anti-war song she sings a-cappella called “The Fiddle and the Drum”. Be ready to sit in silence for 15-30 seconds when the song is done. Cathartic to the max.

One of the best things you can say about an artist is that there is no one else like them, and it is certainly true in the best possible way with Joni. I concur with "Big Yellow Taxi" as you next Joni pick.

Her live album "Miles Of Aisles" is great! Listen to the whole thing, but "Carey" is one of my favorites!

one of the earliest Joni Mitchell is " Urge for going" from a Canadian folk song tv show. It's worth just to see how blown away the other musicians are!!!!

This is a time of year for a listen to "Chelsea Morning" Joni has so many songs to hear from herself and others who performed these soothing songs. CANADA is proud of this girl.

A friend’s mother gave me her Joni albums when I was around 16. I fell in love with the music and the lyrics but, as a 16 year old, I didn’t always get it. Was fortunate enough to see Joni perform when I was around 23 and, now at 62, so much of what she sings about has resonated with me as I’ve matured, got married, had children, and now heading for divorce. So many song lyrics from the 70’s had themes that I didn’t understand when I was a teenager but I’m so glad they were there for me as I became an adult.

I am from this era and she is just amazing, I am so happy that younger people listen to her and appreciate the gift of her amazing lyrics and voice. This song reminds me of when my husband died. You go back to so many places when you lose someone. Thinking about all my wrongs, etc. We had a very special relationship, but I think most people who lose someone have regrets as to actions and words that were no said when they were alive.

Probably suggested somewhere down there but Little Green from the same album (Blue) as this song is the one that just slays me every time. Based on her own real life experience of being a young single mother and trying to cope before giving her child up for adoption.
