The album that this song comes from, Court and Spark, is one of the all time great albums, and among die hard Joni fans, maybe not even her best. Her song Big Yellow Taxi was a cultural phenomenon that encapsulates the entire hippy vibe from the late 60's, all in one song. She wrote the song Woodstock, but it became a big massive hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. She wrote Court and Spark on a piano but wrote the album Hejira on a guitar. Such a great album. 'Freeman in Paris'. 'Both Sides Now' (one of the most covered songs in history). The Blue album is considered, rightly so, a masterpiece. When she performed several years ago at a small intimate venue in Los Angeles several singing icons in their own right (Carly Simon, Chrissy Hind, Barbra Streisand attended because as Chrissy said, 'We wanted to hear a real singer'. Her lyrics are astonishing. Look at some of her album covers. She painted many. :) She wrote the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young hit, 'Woodstock'. And her song, 'This Flight Tonight' was turned into a rocker by Nazareth. Her music has been turned into a ballet. And she is a member of The Order of Canada - I guess the U.S. equivalent would be the Medal of Freedom? She is LEGEND. Her live version of 'California' will blow your mind. I'm 60 years old, and have been grooving on Joni since I was a teenager. It bring tears of joy to my eyes to see such young people swinging and swaying to what was Joni's first monster hit (sung by her). She wrote "Circle Game" and "Both Sides Now" which were hits before this, but they were sung by Judy Collins (for whom Stephen Stills wrote "Suite Judy Blue Eyes"), and "Woodstock", the first big hit for Crosby, Stills and Nash. Graham Nash of that supergroup wrote "Our House" for Joni, when they were a couple... "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" was written about Stephen and Judy breaking up. Joni wrote the songs "My Old Man" and "River" about him. Man - those cats sure got around, and bared their souls in their music. Trust me: laying it all out in your songs, AND getting hits out of that is not something Taylor Swift invented... and nobody did it better than Joni.

"Flower power" was the vibe, and a flower circlet or Daisy chain is what you were searching for, Rob. 😊 Joanie's voice is definitely one of a kind.👍

Since you are having a boy, you have to listen to Joni Mitchell sing "Circle Game". It's about a boy growing up. I'm sure that you will love it! And you'll probably cry!

Yes Joni is a class of her own. Each album is unique and amazing.❤️ early Joni is Chelsea Morning, Both Sides Now, Circle Game, Woodstock: then the Blue album followed by Court and Spark are iconic. Enjoy the genius of Joni.

For the Roses, one of her best and most accessible albums came between Blue and Court and Spark. For that reason, it often gets overlooked, which is a real shame..

@@bilahn1198 yes! first song came to mind is Woman of Heart and Mind.

I’ve requested Joni as well and I’m so happy they finally got to her. Please do “A Case of You” “River” and “Little Green”

@@MilosDaddy True, but we all know J and his need for genres need. From 60-90s she was kniwn as a folk singer. Which encompasses all the grest singer/songwriters of that age.

She is certainly an act on her own. She got her start the coffee houses in Toronto in the 60s- you nailed the hippie feel. Later she got into jazz see Court and Spark.

After Joni Mitchell, you should probably listen to Joan Baez "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down".
@kmj2173 жыл бұрын
It was actually written by Robbie Robertson of The Band and it was on their self-titled album.
@richardb62603 жыл бұрын
@@kmj217 yep. But it's always the first song I think of when I think of Joan Baez. Along with, oddly enough, "Rejoice in the Sun" from the "Silent Running" soundtrack.

I knew you would like her. She was definitely a one time talent. Many songs like this at that time. All about the rhythm. And the lyrics and voice.

I love her phrasing, and I concur on “River” an absolute beauty. “both sides now”, “big yellow taxi” and “come in from the cold” are my faves. And yes play some Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles were her band for a stint.

If you ever get a chance try " Diamonds and Rust " by Joan Baez. Classic from 1975. About a one-way love between two people.
