okay, so, fun story, I once met Joni Mitchell. I was working in a store in the airport in Calgary, it was a book store but also sold music and movies and travel accessories. One day Joni came into the store, and I was pretty sure I recognized her but I assumed it was just someone that looked like her. She asked if we had batteries and I showed her where they were. She grabbed 4 packs of the most expensive alkaline batteries we had, and while I was ringing them in, she noticed music playing on the sound system and asked "is this the new Dylan?" It was, and she bought the only Deluxe Boxed Set copy we had. Then she handed me her credit card and I saw the name, and said "I thought it was you!" And she got the biggest smile on her face. She signed an autograph for me, and another from my roommate at the time who was a huge Joni fan. I got to chat with her a bit, she was very friendly and not in a hurry at all. Here's the kicker: a few weeks later I read an interview with her in a magazine, and she totally trashed the new Bob Dylan album (the one I sold her), and kinda shit-talked Dylan in general, saying he's inauthentic. I will always find it amusing that I was partially and indirectly responsible for some legendary trash talk from one of Canada's heroes.

She wrote the songs, played her instruments wonderfully, sang like an angel, and is an accomplished painter and living legend. Please explore her entire body of work. She's one of the artistic titans of our age. Don't worry, Amber, she makes me cry, too. It's mostly because I'm just in complete awe of how good she is, and this song is a perfect example.

Joni does describe herself both in her song “a case of you” as well as in her interviews, as a Painter first, “living in a box of paints”! I get that she does this in her songs through the perfect use of her very selective use of words and melodies to paint in your mind the pictures from her songs!

So the instrument in the beginning is a not an acoustic guitar at all; it's a mountain dulcimer. It's an instrument used in folk music, which sits flat on your lap; you strum across with it a thin guitar pick. Amber, that may explain why you find the tone much more crisp and clean-sounding; it's actually an entirely new instrument to your ears. Next Stops, Joni Mitchell Edition: "Big Yellow Taxi" "Hejira" "Coyote"

@marktotton4097 I mean what I said. Despite the considerable body of critical recognition, it's only recently that she's been getting the kind of devoted attention she's always deserved. The Dylan comparison is a good case in point. She IS up there with Dylan, and whilst he's sold 125 million albums and has an Oscar and Nobel Prize to his name, Joni's got neither, and has sold just over 9 million. That's hardly a difference determined by their respective quality. Joni still hasn't received the plaudits she deserves.

Joni Mitchell is an incredible artist. Keep digging through her catalogue - you will not be disappointed. This was my mom's favourite album and I was raised on it. One for your family is "Circle Game"

Thank you for showcasing three of our amazing Canadians. Corey Hart, Jeff Healey, and Joni. Could you please add Blue Rodeo to your mix? One of our very best Canadian Bands - with an over 30 year career. I promise once you go down the rabbit hole you'll never want to stop. Try, Diamond Mine, Trust Yourself, Heart Like Mine is just a small list to get you started.

She's one of those people who defined her generation. One of the best folk singers of all time. Try 'Both Sides Now', 'California', and 'Big Yellow Taxi'. There are acoustic live performances of the first 2. I think they were from some BBC show from 1970. Btw, she re-released 'Both Sides Now' decades later. Both versions are good but very different.

Joni is a complete artist. Great songwriter, great voice, underrated guitarist, great lyricist, painter and a woman who made her way in the music business without compromise!!! This song is about the end of her relationship with Leonard Cohen. She can drink a case of him a be still be on her feet because she is done. Just before our love got lost you said "I am as constant as a northern star" And I said, "Constantly in the darkness Where's that at?'' Her lyrics is influence by the poetry of Leonard: I remember that time you told me You said, "Love is touching souls" Surely you touched mine 'Cause part of you pours out of me In these lines from time to time This verse is about Leonard's mother giving her some advice: I met a woman She had a mouth like yours She knew your life She knew your devils and your deeds And she said, "Go to him, stay with him if you can But be prepared to bleed" Enjoy!

I love the whole Hejira album. I'm torn though between the title song, "Hejira" and Amelia for my favorite.

@@Timoeltejano Thank you. Amelia is the song of whose title I was trying to think. Tribute to Amelia Earnhardt, yes? Great song.

I second Hejira .. her voice and that unmistakable bass from the greatest to ever touch the instrument; Jaco Pastorius.

Not only does Joni have a voice like an angel, the lyrics and music sound like they're from what only can be heaven.

I think you’d also love Eva Cassidy - Somewhere Over The Rainbow for another pure voice.

Amber's reaction just to the first verse of this song was one of the purest and most beautiful reactions I've ever seen, and many other times you could also see how Joni's voice just reached down into her heart and soul (and Rob was certainly feeling it too). I don't believe in any of the gods mankind has invented over the millenia, but this is the type of song that makes you know there is something more powerful at play in the universe. Music like this touches parts of us that is spiritual and connects us with a higher power; no doubt about it.

Not a guitar - a mountain dulcimer. Joni has always been my all-time favorite female singer. Not only does she have an angelic natural voice but her lyrics and phrasing are immaculate and on a higher plane.
