There's a story that one day The Rascals were recording in the Atlantic studios in New York. The studio door opened and Otis Redding stuck his head in. "I wanted to see if you guys were really white," Otis said. The Rascals are one of my favorite 60s bands. Felix Cavaliere was the lead singer here; he also played keyboards, mostly Hammond organ. Dino Danelli was one of the great drummers of the time, Gene Cornish played guitar, and Eddie Brigati was the second vocalist and also cowriter with Felix of the group's hits. Onstage they set up like The Doors with no bass player. Felix got bass with the organ pedals. The backing vocals you hear were Eddie and his brother David who was an uncredited fifth member. My other Rascals faves are "People Got To Be Free," "Lonely Too Long," "What Is The Reason," and "Carry Me Back." Some live clips of the band show what an amazing drummer Dino was.
@nathanwahl92242 ай бұрын
I wonder who was the studio bassist then, this sure as hell is NOT pedals. Whoever it was, was incredible, what a fantastic line!! Very funky, bouncy, running a counter-melody the whole time. Not way under-rated, it's totally unknown, adds so much. What a shame. Sorry to hear that their live performances didn't have it.
@rrailguitar22112 ай бұрын
@@nathanwahl9224 In their early recordings Gene Cornish would dub in simple bass parts. Later they brought in session players, probably based in New York. The two names I remember reading about are Richard Davis and Chuck Rainey. There may have been a couple others. Richard Davis had a jazz background, played on Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" LP and early Springsteen records. Chuck Rainey played on a ton of records (such as "Aja"), and was a favorite of The Rascals. When the Brigatis left and Felix Cavaliere was trying to take the band in a jazzy direction Chuck was made a band member, though The Rascals didn't last much longer.

Jay and Amber: The band would bill themselves as the Young Rascals for the last time with the single release of "It's Wonderful"; from that point on they were known as simply 'The Rascals'. Their first official single release as "the Rascals" was the optimistic 1968's "A Beautiful Morning", which reached #3. Internationally, the band was exceptionally popular in Canada where "A Girl Like You", "How Can I Be Sure?" and "A Beautiful Morning" all reached #1. But they struggled in the UK, where they only twice reached the top 75, with "Groovin'" (#8) and "A Girl Like You" (#35).

The original blue eyed soul band. I loved this song, but I loved their more soulful hits such as "I've Been Lonely Too Long", "A Girl Like You", "Good Lovin' ", and "How Can I Be Sure". It's a shame these guys broke up because they couldn't stand one another. Some other so called blue eyed soul groups may have been seen as appropriating a culture, but these guys were always respectful and always seemed to add to it. I saw them live twice during this era and they were great performers and great people.

First off, another great reaction to a great song Amber and Jay. This one is a blast from the past for me. I've always loved this song as a huge Rascals fan. One spring morning in 1969 I was walking into a college building for an 8:30 class. This guy came walking out of the building from a 7:30 class and looked around as he was leaving the building and broke out into this very song. He sang out loud "It's a beautiful morning. I think I'll go outside for a while." Without thinking I responded in song "And just smile." He grinned at me, and we stood 3 feet apart on the sidewalk in Tahlequah, OK and sang this complete song. He sang lead and I sang the background/harmony vocals. A few people stopped to watch and listen, but nobody said anything. We finished, gave each other a high five and went on our way. I went to my class, and he went wherever it was he was headed. Have no idea who the guy was and have never seen him again. But it was an incredible memory attached to an amazing tune. Thanks for letting me share this. Keep up the terrific reactions guys. You rock! Peace out.

Just wanted to relay sad news. The other half of the group Stealers Wheel, (of "Stuck In The Midde With You" fame), has passed away. Gerry Rafferty & Joe Egan were songwriters, and their harmonies were wonderful. This is exactly why the Beatles never allowed any of their songs to be used in commercials. They did want their songs to be connected to any products like shoes or cereals. That’s why Paul McCartney was livid when Michael Jackson used Revolution in a Sony commercial. Jay just proved the point.
