Please join me as I explore the life of Sid James - Not just a Carry On.
Sid James was a legend of the Carry On films - appearing in 19 of them - they have come to represent Sid James and his name is now forever linked with the Carry On comedy genre.
However, there was another side to Sid James that isn’t so often considered - during this video we’ll take a step back in time as we go back to Sid James' roots and observe how he transformed from a school failure into one to the most popular comedy actors of all time.
Sid James had obsessions that included work, women, gambling, drinking, and smoking - but not necessarily in that order!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and hopefully watch the video! If you would like to support the channel, please leave a ‘like’ and ‘Subscribe’ as that’s immensely helpful in keeping the channel going and it’s FREE! I won't ask you for donations of any kind and that’s including Paypal donations! I value your support and if you’ve already subscribed - Thank you so much! You’re wonderful!
Please feel free to leave comments - we have a fabulous growing film and nostalgia community at Beautiful Bad & Bizarre - and it’s great fun with some interesting discussions!
I do my best to respond to all comments but it can take a bit of time - so thank you in advance for your patience!

I had met Sid James in 1975 for one of his rare live to air tv interviews, Brisbane, Australia. I was Sid's cameraman and floor manager for that tv interview. Sid was a gentleman, polite and very funny of course. He was a true professional. I enjoyed his company over the two hour television period. A time I will always cherish and never forget.

Scratchy, I agree. To me, Sid WAS Carry On, and its also a great shame that The Lad, Tony Hancock, dropped Sid as he was worried about the double act stigma. However, he went on to do things like The Blood Donor alone whilst Sid's star grew in the Carry on firmament. I find Sid magnetic on screen - and I always watch him when he is in a scene as he is quite infectious! I mastered his laugh over thirty years ago and still say "Oh gawd blimey!" all the time!

When I was aged 14 I had a Saturday job shampooing hair in a high class hairdressers called Hugo’s. It was located in park road halfway way between regents park and Baker Street. Mrs James valerie, was a customer, she was a very quiet and elegant lady softly spoken. Mr James Sidney would cross the road to the public house opposite called the Windsor arms and wait for her, a very nice couple. Happy days that would have been in 1973/74 roughly

The Carry on films are CLASSIC and as watchable today as they were when they were first shown. Although there was a lot of inuendo there was Never anything else Just plain funny. They didn't rely on Bad Language or anything nasty "Just inuendo"- "Pure family fun". On top of that the cast were very professional, you only have to look at Barbara Windsor to know that. Big fan of Sidney James, What a talent, He was becoming a star in his early days 1946 , onwards. Long before Carry on film. He was there With Hollywood stars, Jack Palance. Tony Curtis. Burt Lancaster, He was so lucky at that time. The rest his history, I've so many Carry on Films Never get tired of watching them , Im" Descustid with fellow carry on star's Who didn't attend his funeral," Sid James once said to a guy who was having a go at a fellow carry on female star To take a walk Sid had done some boxing in his time,? That was a Man there to look after the stars should he be needed,Anyway, it was nice to see two fellow carry on star's Berard Bresslaw & Jack Douglas attended Sids Funeral, Can't Believe No other Carry On Stars attended , Its going to be a bit hurtful when i see a Carry on film from now On , 48 years ago now Since Sidney James left Us, From Myself & Other Fans God Bless , 😊

Same here! I grew up absolutely loving Sid - obviously, some areas of his life were not perfect, I'm pretty sure that goes for most of us - but I always found him most entertaining and a great actor - in some very serious parts! The boxing thing - he rather overegged that particular pudding - most of his boxing was more brawling - when he was younger 😂 apparently! I can only imagine the reason there were so few attendees for his funeral from the Carry On team - would have been due to his relationship with Barbara Windsor - that's just my thoughts on it - as I do believe there were a lot of issues around that time and it's possible it had something to do with that? Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching! xxxx

My parents actually knew Sid James and most of the carry on crew. The carry on films, for the most part, was filmed in pinewood studios not far from Uxbrigde. I remember the story my birth father told me about Sid James. My birth father was a mechanic, and Sid's vehicle had broken down. My birth father at the time didn't know who Sid was. When he arrived at Sid's home. My birth father was greeted with gun fire. Sid James was apparently on the roof shooting at crows. That's how they met. My parents actually took me and my brother to his house. I was too young to remember where about it was in London. All I do remember is that the front doors of these homes opened up right onto the street. Sid, of course, was long gone by that time. For some reason, both my parents knew and had a lot of friends who were actors and actresses. Sid James was merely 1 of many that they knew. I remember what my mum said about people like Sid James. In those days, people became actors not for fame and glory (well, most of them) but as a job to support themselves and their families. The most famous person my parents met was Cliff Richard. With Cliff it was actually my mum that met him and not my birth father. But when it comes to Sid James I know that my parents always thought of him highly. I think that they had migrated out to Australia when Sid passed away. Because I reckon if they were over there, they probably would have attended to his funeral. RIP Sid James.

@BeautifulBadandBizarre I wouldn't put it past it. They probably did. I know that my poor birth father had a close encounter with Vincent Price. And there's a Dracula film out there somewhere. That there's in the footage is lights across the lake and that'll be my birth father and his friend. They were fishing in black Lake, which is apparently a part of pinewood studios. But Diana Dores, I'm not so sure. But no doubt they had some running with her. The worst people my family had an encounter with were the infamous Cray twins. But that was my grandfather. But so did Barbara Windsor. I only learnt about that recently. I can tell you the story about Vincent Prince if you like, it's extremely funny.

The stage manager at the Sunderland Empire in 1976 was Melvyn James ('James' being Mel's real surname). I can confirm that your account is largely correct. I never met the man but know people who did. Sid was very highly respected and loved by everyone. Indeed, so was Hattie Jacques. Both sadly missed.

I once heard a story about Sid James' affair with Babs Windsor. She was still married to Ronnie Knight who warned Sid to stay away from her. The affair continued and a few weeks later, Sid came home to his flat to find that all the furniture had been rearranged, nothing broken and the flat was left clean and tidy but everything was in a different place. It was a warning that Sid and Babs took seriously and their relationship cooled until after her divorce from Knight.

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre too upset? I have worked in a funeral home for over 30 years now and I rarely get someone who is too upset to pay their last respects… For people who find death confronting I suggest they at least stand on the road where the hearse will be heading and emphasise that they don’t even have to look at the coffin, a bowed head to avoid looking at the reality of their loved ones fate can also look like their head is bowed out of respect/reverence. People find that an acceptable compromise so even if they had been ‘too upset’ they could have shown their faces in one way or another. Watching all the documentaries and reading a few autobiographies about the Carry On ‘family’ - as a massive life long fan of the Carry On films - it seems that a lot of people, particularly Joan Sims didn’t like Sid’s extra marital dalliance with Babs, so that might explain their noticeable absence 🤷🏻‍♀️ Babs on the other hand went from being a shameless social climber to a much loved actress and all her bed hopping was forgotten about. Very odd I think! Edit… Typo

Yes! I can only go by what I read in the newspaper and they were the exact words! That was really interesting and you did incredibly well to compress so much information into such a short video. I believe Sid's contract with the Carry On films was unique amongst the actors in that he benefitted to an extent from repeat fees. It's generally well known that everyone else was paid badly by the producers. I once read an article by Margaret Nolan who said that Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas did nothing to help Charles Hawtrey, for example, when he experienced financial hardship. Possibly there was some resentment towards Sid for similarly not sharing, but as you say, professional and personal jealousy comes into it too. Sid was the only performer to appear in every single one of the radio Hancocks and personally I think the comic timing of both, as well as many of the scripts, was far better to listen to than watch. I don't think Hancock ever truly acknowledged the contributions of James, Williams or Hattie Jacques and Bill Kerr rightly pointed out that the programs went up a notch when Hattie arrived. Anyway, thanks again for the video and especially the Liz Fraser inserts. She never looked better on screen than in 'Double Bunk' and I've watched that and waited for her arrival many times.

Yes!!!! I read that Joan Sims fell on hard times financially too and Liz tried to help her get help from them as well! But nothing! I don’t have all the facts at hand this morning but I also believe the women were paid considerably less than the men - and Joan said they did it because they all enjoyed being together. Hancock I think had major ego and insecurity issues - I think initially Sid was a vehicle for Tony to shine - and then he started to see him as competition - it hurt Sid horribly when the break came. Liz was amazing - she struggled through many tragic events in her life but was such a trooper!!!

You've excelled yourself with this one the amount of detail is amazing. I've read the biography on Sid and yes his personal life in South Africa is rather confusing. Believe it or not but as a young man Sid was quite handsome. It seems the craggy face was a genetic quirk in the Solomon male line. Get to around 30 and they started developing the look Sid was famous for. The early pics of him show a smooth skinned young man with expressive eyes. Another reason he got out of South Africa was his womanising. As a ladies hairdresser he had access to all the crumpet in town married or not. He had the gift of the gab and as a result a lot of fathers and husbands were after his blood. When Sid died I was 15. I remember celebrity deaths before that like Hancock and Jim Clark the racing driver but they were remote just someone on the news. Sid was on telly, the pictures, everywhere. At school we tried to copy his laugh and we loved him. His death hit me as it did many. I cared that he was gone Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond Sid Fiddler Sidney Abbott, Sir Rodney Ffing ( two F's) was dead. There's only one Sid and there's been no one like him since or who could ever replace him. Hancock Street???? It just had to be didn't it? Cheers 👏👏👏👏👏

Phew! That is a truly superb run through of his timeliness. More importantly, from what is known, it's an honest overview of Solly. It must have been hard to compose a love letter to such a rough diamond, but this was yours and I think you have done an amazing job. Sid x Ps I'm sad much of the carry on team didn't attend his funeral. Whatever their misgivings and judgments were about him, he helped make those films and their careers bigger than ever. He deserved better.

Thanks as ever Sid!!! ❤❤❤ Yes Mr James had a complicated life - names… places…. love life - it was all a lot to unravel - and so many different versions! I thought it was sad to that not many of his Carry On colleagues attended his funeral - I don’t know why - I could make some guesses for a couple of them - but not all of them. The truth is too that while Sid had his faults - they all did - we all do - it’s called being human! Thank you for watching! ❤❤❤

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre when I think of those golden years of British cinema, his name always comes up. He was so successful. The nation adored him. I'm sure that, along with his personal lifestyle, irked some of the cast who wanted more limelight. I understand they all had issues with others, especially the creators, whom they felt ripped them off. Jack Douglas once told me that. He was sore that royalties never came when the movies were shown on TV, year after year. In the end, it was a paying job and they didn't need to take that gig. They did because, as much as it wasn't Macbeth, it was good honest work and the nation loved each film. The more we dig, the nastier it gets. Thanks again, Shar. You're doing great work, as always. Love, as always. "Sid"

Oh my goodness!!! You got to speak to Jack Douglas!!? How envious am I!!! 🤩 that’s amazing! I agree - Sid was very much loved by the viewing public - of course he wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I don’t remember anyone not loving him back then!!! ❤️❤️❤️
