I look at Kate's body now and wonder what the controversy was - models these days are SO MUCH thinner then she ever was. We really have become a society of extremes - never have we all been so obese and overweight, and never have our models been tipped so far into underweight. I think the two are related and the bigger we become, the more and more we desire and idolise thinness.
@miwfreak43123 жыл бұрын
I wouldnt say so much thinner. But they are about the same. Lol. And she was the model that brought back that extremely thin model trend. Before her you could be a bit bigger and walk the runways.

So true. I had a body slightly smaller than Kate’s almost all of my teen years, even after puberty. I was naturally thin and ate whatever. It’s so silly and lame that people, especially heavier set people, can’t simply believe or fathom some people are just naturally thin. Which is how Kate got scouted in the first place. And I do believe models like Kaia Gerber (at the height of her eating disorder in like 2018) are so much thinner than Kate was in the 90s.

The 80s and early 90s were pretty gross about these young models (I mean showbiz was always kinda gross about kids - look at Judy Garland). I think Brooke Shields has talked about how she was considered a 'thing' and sexualized in the public eye pretty early. Drew Barrymore's whole pubescent life is sort of a horror story considering she was drinking and going to Studio 54 when she was like 10 or 11. Even Corey Feldman/Haim talked about it. But if we're being pedantic about the context of 'thing' here I think he meant it like the phrase 'pretty young thing', which is a fairly common phrase (although...come to think of it, it was popularized by a Michael Jackson song). Calvin Klein's whole 90s aesthetic was fairly creepy though, not something I noticed when I was younger. To me they just seemed like the cool older (because I was a kid) fresh faced kids. You get older and realize a lot of them were teenagers when they were writhing around seductively. In another interview Kate says that photographers always wanted her to take her clothes off, despite the fact that she used to hate her body.

"Model should be thin, and clothes look better on thin" - when people could actually say the truth without the whole world attacking them.
@Chrisa24329 жыл бұрын
Yes models SHOULD be thin. And yes clothes look better on thin ppl that's a truth. I am slim and when I buy a new outfit people ask me (even irrelevant people on street, supermarket) where I bought it from. This body type sells the clothes. And I'm not a model now I was doing tho some modelling in past
@Devio429 жыл бұрын
+joeruffin This idea was heavily ingrained for you to believe this. If the fashion industry would've started with bigger women in the first place, it would be the opposite. Truthfully, it isn't about women at all. Designers profit, and bigger clothes = having to spend more money. This idea sprung up from the 1950-1960's were models were slightly thicker. But now the idea of "looking better = skinny" is a money scheme and you sir, fell for it.
@CameronCourts7 жыл бұрын
To say that it is "nature" is untrue. It has a lot to do with culture. For example, Black American men prefer their women to be thicker, while White American men prefer them thinner. Centuries ago, European men also preferred heavier women, as it was seen as a sign of wealth and status. In the 90s, having a flat butt was considered the height of beauty(by white americans). You weren't truly "thin" (i.e. desirable) if you had a big butt. Today, however, almost everyone accepts that a bigger butt is most desirable. That's not nature, that is culture.
@miwfreak43127 жыл бұрын
calafeast a lot of people these days love bigger butts and in the 90s I don't believe it was that big. Maybe still in black culture but now I feel like it has spread. Most men who I talk to these days prefer girls with thin waste, yet a nice sized booty. White and black men alike. At least from my experience. The fashion world still pushes for very thin women but our culture is definitely celebrating that body type as well. So I definitely agree that it's a cultural thing. I think that you are little prejudice tho since you capitalized on black/white women when this never really was about race but body type. You also implied that white is high class and black is not. You may not agree, but I think it's pretty obvious and that you should reflect. Because it's becoming less and less acceptable! Anyway, I've noticed while watching porn that the women aren't size 0. They are not fat either and are definitely still thin but not model like thin. Which I think shows that men are at least liking that as well. Nevertheless, I do think that thin people wear clothes very well. And are perfect for the modelling industry. Its just clear to me tho that culture has a lot to do with our beauty standards.

“There’s nothing about her that’s fake”. This is true including her personality and spirit. She never hid her brash Croydon heritage. Or pretended to be someone else (off camera). Would she make it in the modelling/influencer world today? She doesn’t come from money, she’s not a celebrity type (very private), and most importantly she’s no artificial or doctored. I would say no. Because, Kate is the perfect example of someone who embodies a certain time and place (like Twiggy). That grungy/indie laidback-romantic period of the 90’s was in full swing on both sides of the pond. She’s kinda punk meet’s aristocracy. Club kid and princess. Alien and at the same time familiar. Brassy and delicate. Just here her speak and all will be revealed. I don’t agree with the child-woman analogy as this is a warped projection by an American man (hetro then, gay later). One can look at Kate beyond the gender performance. Compared to the top “models” of today she’s a dream.

Kate Moss has always striked me more of an edgy woman, not /cute/adorable type like much. She might have some typical features that are common among women with such faces, but she is one example that show that there are no specific rules. Madonna is also an example of a face that could have some such features, yet she does not have that girly or cute face at all.. She is also more of an edgy/rock-chic type of woman, not the cute/adorable type. Sometimes it just seem that some label people based on features that can mean different things to different people. Usually you just know this by intuition, even if there are more general rules that usually apply, but not always. Also a face can change from time to time and be affected by things like exhaustion, illness etc. Miranda Kerr has more of an obvious cute/adorable type of face, but I would not call it child-like. Women are just different and they do not need to be given labels like child-like or badass or whatever label they pick. Let women be allowed to just be the way they are without having to discuss every tiny thing. Women are different and men like different things. No need or any purpose to try to force everyone into being the same or trying to push men to like the same. Just accept that everyone is different and like different things.

what makes me laugh about the press/ media when it comes to models is that most models are discovered when they are still children, many haven't even turned 18 when scouted. Kate was 14 so of course she would have been naturally very skinny but she got accused of being 'too thin', then accused of heroin chic, then whatever else, when its the stylists,make-up artists and whoever else plays a key role in the image making process that are responsible for images. The public are left to interpret the image how they want but its interesting how many allow themselves to be dictated to, and influenced by, the press.

@starlight angel🌌🫐 No, that's a comment of someone who simply states the truth without sugar-coating it. I'm not a creep and nor hate women when I say that men are *generally* biologically wired to be attracted to young women who emanate physical innocence and frailty (submission) as well as to signs of fertility (wider hips and medium-big chest). Kate didn't emanate much of the latter, but a *lot* of the first, hence why his statement. There is a reason why most men indulging in porn prefer watching young women who have a cute face expressing looks of submission and words of such, as well as having a delicate hourglass figure. As far as Calvin saying she has this child like woman thing that men go crazy for, this is true with a lot of men. From my observation a lot of them like the Lolita type of woman. Even in books and film and tv I've seen these type of women desired and make guys go crazy. Idk why but that statement is true.

Take me back to the 90's!! These days the majority of popular models are not humble, thankful or talented whatsoever. What they are is ungrateful, rich from birth and family heritage, bitchy and fake (personality and physically). So frustrating when people claim gigi and kendall to be SUPERmodels

Calm down. Not all the models were kind and humble, many only acted like that in front of the cameras. Now the internet exists, so it's much easier to find out about the bad attitudes of celebrities. And why would you want to go back to a time when anorexia and other eating disorders were common and even considered "beautiful"?

I think Calvin Klein has a point. Heath Ledger, Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny depp etc all had a “boyish” look which women loved back in the day. It’s the same now. As he puts it it touches a nerve. For men and women.

Alejandra Puente Here we have the typical brainwashed girl, caring only about being thin and actually thinking that fat is an insult, running from fat, chasing colar bones, thigh gaps, skinny! and your life is complete, because then you can post photos on instagram and facebook, people as ignorant as you will congratulate you on your thigh gap, and ask you for advices, you'll feel like someone finally, being known by your body, a piece of meat to be looked at... I have absolutely nothing against skinny or fat, or whatever your body is, but what I have a problem with is that people like you exist, dumb, but so dumb. Once you are recognized by your intelligence, which, with those clearly ignorant comments, I'm sure you aren't, the person you are, I'll actually even bother being bothered by you. oh... and god bless you :)
