Great video Steve. Also fuel oil truck drivers need to keep the drains cleared on top of the truck. The hatches have 2 way vents. Let's pressure out when hauling gas. Let's air in when pumping out a compartment. They release at 3psi and intake at 1psi. If water is sitting on top of them they will let it seep in. Also until that muck is gotten out the tank they better cut the boiler off before fuel delivery and not turn it on after delivery for a hour.

From all the oil related problems I’ve seen on your channel, soot, water, filters & pumps, makes me glad I have gas. LOL
@NotSoCrazyNinja4 жыл бұрын
Gas can be cleaner, but there is the issues of explosion hazard and, in my area at least, the cost. Heating oil is cheaper here by quite a bit compared to LPG and natural gas is limited. To service my house, the gas company wants about five grand. They can keep their gas.
@Renville804 жыл бұрын
Mark Reaves I want my gas company to move their meter outside so they don’t have to bug me for a time when they can get access for their annual inspection, but they said it would be about a grand as they would have to run a new branch line (plastic) and retire the old steel pipe. Nah. I’ll put up with phone tag once a year instead.

Could be former tenants getting some revenge, maybe served cold. Could be some drunk taking a piss down the tube every chance they get. Could be a bad batch (possibly the supplier has a tank that is getting water in it). Never know for sure. If it happens a second time, would be worth it to install cameras.

I’m surprised that Steve seeing water in the oil cleaned the pump change the filter then proceeded to run that bad oil thru the filter and pump before going to the tank and seeing if water is coming out the bottom and taking care 1st before running thru a clean filter?

I had an oil delivery a month ago and that night it poured over 2 inches of rain . Oil burner died while I was in the shower tankless and shortly the hot water went cold. After I got dressed I went out back just on a hunch and found the fill cap sitting on top of the tank vent. Called a tech I know and trust and we jacked up one end of the tank and drained just over 13 gallons of water from the tank. Called the oil company that delivered the oil and the owner told me he fired the driver, he allowed the drive on call to take the truck home and this idiot was adding water with his garden hose to the tank. He had over 30 customers calling up after their burners died after a fuel delivery! My tank is outdoors feeding my mobile home and I do run a water separator right before the burner pump. Oil company paid for al service calls from that delivery truck. He said one of them they drained over 200 gallons of water. Just glad it wasn't below zero.

reading over some of the comments im wondering if it was just a simple after the fill the cap was left off the nozzle and it snowed or got warm and had some runoff dribble down into the tank during a fill or afterwards till it was noticed then the cap put back on. i used to work for a gas station maintenance company and we would occasionally see that, the big fill tanks on the ground and would wind up with a bit of water in the tank if it rained heavy during the fill
@DrewsLair7 жыл бұрын
Thomas Guillot i know thats possible but one time we ran out of oil so we used diesel and forgot to put the cap back on, it rained and snowed like hell during sandy but nothing got in the tank

Good no Great video.. CONDENSATION!..It is not a myth, it is a reality, condensation in fuel tanks is real.. air space above the fuel level will form condensation,, lower the fuel level, the more the condensation,, keeping a fuel tank topped off with fresh fuel is very helpfull in eliminating condensation.. The condensate that forms in the top of a tank settles out in the bottom of the tank as sludge,, then when adding fuel to the near empty tank stirs up the sludge a bit and causes problems. The nature of fuel storage for heating use in a house is a slow use process, in other words the tank spends more time half full or less than full.. quite a bit of time if you think about it. I have saw several gallons of condensate in comparable size construction/farm equipment tanks which are "cycled" and refilled much more often than home fuel tanks,, In other words, it is always best practice to maintain a fuel storage tank always closer to the "full" level. Water separators are a huge asset in fuel storage management. Steve, in the part of the country you are in, the condensate build up in those steel tanks would be huge if those tanks are sitting half empty the majority of the time. and obviously the "nature of the beast: would make that a reality, especially if folks leave those tanks near empty during the off heating season. I do not think it was bad fuel, nor vandalism,, it is a build up of condensate. I have saw that much and many times that much condensate in tanks ... Looks like some company in your area would market a small fuel water separator to help avoid those problems.. Of course, you are doing a great job diagnosing and repairing and maintenance of those systems. Thumbs up good vid,,, Just wanted to share experience I know about condensation in the tanks,, It is a problem and an opportunity for a new solution in your area for home fuel tanks. That tank still has water in it, you can bet your ass on that.. (job security for you)..lol
@Yodumeee3 жыл бұрын
Yup. Hate hearing "bad batch" all the time. Gives the oil delivery guys a bad name. Every company even the ones with their own terminals get the same oil from either Chelsea or Braintree or Quincy all from the same tankers. And they dump the oil out of the trucks quickly it isn't sitting around. The biofuel as well attracts water it sucks
@daggggy4 жыл бұрын
they dip the tank before and after your lease the last renters didnt want to fill it so they put the garden hose in the tank so it read full

I can't believe that customer felt like he had to stand there hovering over you while you worked the whole time like that. That would annoy the shit out of me. They don't run on water. It would be nice to know where they got it so it hopefully doesn't happen again. I have a friend that got a bad load of oil about 15 yrs ago. They had a leak on the truck and it rained the night before they delivered, about 5-10 gals of water in his tank along with about 10 other customers.

I'm glad that I don't have oil heat. There's too much stuff that can go bad, and the high flue temp shows a lot of waste heat ($$$) going up the chimney. It would melt the PVC that vents my gas heat.
@raysabbatino254924 күн бұрын
Actually, that flue temp of the mid 400 is pretty much very good. when oil heat is running as it should there is no better and warmer heat.

Since the water goes to the bottom of the tank it typically takes several inches of water before it enters the oil intake line so when you pump it out through the oil burner you only clear the line and not all the water remaining in the tank just below the intake. So all you need is a little more water getting into the tank before it once again rises to the intake level and gets sucked into the line and stops the burner (and gums up the filters). Ideally you would want to pump the water from the bottom of the oil tank until you see pure oil (typically 5-10 gals) and make sure no more water enters the tank in the future. You can get some cheap small pumps from Harbor Freight as this is usually beyond the scope of an oil burner servicing.
