Hi Steve I’ve seen the slime build up in the truck diesel filters. We have been adding Biocide to our bulk tank to help reduce this problem. This may be what needs to be added to home heating tanks Nice videos , I’ve learned a lot from watching, have a old Burnham boiler .

There shouldn’t be any sludge in those 275 gal basement tanks. Oil is being replenished repeatedly throughout the heating season. 1000 gal. buried tank that’s been in for 20 years I could somewhat understand some sludge. It’s a issue with the Refinery, I’d bet on it.

Just out of curiosity, when you say bio-slime, is that an issue common with blended fuels used in the US? Domestic boilers in the UK use class C2 kerosene and the sludge tends to be due to water in fuel tanks creating an environment for bacteria to create that sludge. It usually becomes a problem when either the customer lets the fuel run out and the delivery guy churns it up after filling the tank or from the fuel outlet, on the tank being too low to the bottom and drawing sludge through. I know you guys used red diesel so wonder if that is worse for sludge build-up versus C2 kerosene.

I’ve been researching the Bio Fuel. When introduced into an oil tank it actually breaks down the old sludge in the tank and also absorbs water. This is what causes the Bio Slime. Supposedly, it will eventually clear , but, IMO it will probably take a few seasons which is a PIA. The older the tank, the longer it will take. The oil companies should warn customers what they can expect. If I was still using oil, I’d probably order Kero instead of Bio if pure #2 isn’t available.

I was in the Petroleum business 30 years ago and if I had heating oil customers repeatedly having this same issue I would be raising holy hell with the refinery where I purchased my products. We bought almost exclusively from United Refining in Warren PA. Back then K1 Kerosene was clear, and #2 Heating Oil was light amber. If I was a home owner and I had this issue forced onto me I would do something to rectify it, and it would definitely involve a contentious person like Steve who could further substantiate the situation.
