I wish i would have had a high school teacher like Ms. Gruwell. Seriously, what she did with her students and how she got them to see the potential that they had was just amazing. There needs to be more teachers like her.

Reminds me of my father. He was the principal of a grade school. On the first day of school, he wanted students to write what they'd done in the summer. He came to my mother's class. She told him they couldn't do that. "Sure they can! He gave them a pep talk and one girl brought him her paper. "Honey, what does this say?" "I don't know; I can't read." You will reach some students but the students who are disillusioned aren't wrong. Minimum wage in the UK in it's double dipping recession is a pitiful 6pounds. To prepare a student for a workforce that pays into a very meager wage while advertising and the general consumer culture that surrounds them teachers a young adult, even a older adult to want more if they are to have self worth.

The point is she wanted to change that story....
@tracer43223 жыл бұрын
I don't think she was saying those actions were justified, she was saying their anger was justified. Rodney King didn't deserve to be brutalized by police and they had a right to be angry at that injustice. She never said that they had a right to hurt other people though. In fact, the entire point was that she was trying to get them to channel their anger and pain into writing instead of violence so that they could have a chance at a better future.
@AnaLuizaHella11 жыл бұрын
In 1998 after teaching for only four years, Gruwell left Wilson High School and became a Distinguished Teacher in Residence at California State University, Long Beach. But Hearing Erin speak is like watching a hallmark card cry. Full of syrupy sentiment but no substance. And there must be something good in her philosophy as if she was able to tell us how it was achieved then perhaps other teachers and students could benefit from it.... Maybe we have to bye her books. Maybe I will. But having taught for 12 years now and achieving great results in schools in the London UK and regional areas.

Wow. She's speaking as if the classroom is a warzone which I suppose is true. What a sorry state of affairs. How did it come to this? At the lower level the teachers themselves are to blame. But at the top level it must be that the entire school system of the western hemisphere has disintegrated. This kind of touchy-feely champagne sob-story might work to inspire a few kids but for the rest it's already a lost cause. Bring back 1950s style education and there may be some hope left.
@Joannemgores10 жыл бұрын
So are you speaking as an informed person who has walked through the neighborhoods where these children grew up? The fifties were a quite different time--esp if you were white. Now who's talking about a "touchy-feely champagne" of nostalgia.

don't forget the more important part - the parents, the relatives, the influences that engulf kids for longer time than school. some parents are so disappointed with the world they teach the kids to give up without even trying. I've heard that I will fail because I am poor from my mom, from my grandmom, from any relative who would ask what I would like to do and hearing my aspirations, they just looked surprised. I clung to the education I could have, spent 100$ equivalent of a gift I got on a dictionary that cost 94$. I could have bought clothes, sweets, alcohol but I wanted to learn because I knew it's my ticket out. And it was. I am out of the vicious cycle. And reading V. Megre books helped me a lot, it's an eye opener on completely new level. So the kids coming from such backgrounds need reassurance every day from their teachers not to give up, because they come back home and are kicked down.
@julijakeit5 жыл бұрын
@Snooty Fox what source are you quoting? Your evidence? stop spreading lies.
@tracer43223 жыл бұрын
The education system isn't what brought those students to this point. It's larger systematic issues of racism and classism. 1950s style education would not solve those issues, and it wouldn't help any student in today's world.
