Your father must be of Italian or preferably Sicilian descent. Your mother can be of another ethnicity but they really prefer full blooded Sicilians. You start off as an associate by somehow getting the attention of a member of the family through various criminal activities/knowing them from the neighborhood. If they believe you are a stand up guy and come from good stock you willl usually be given a contract hit to prove loyalty and that you aren’t a fed undercover. Some families you only have to be an accessory but most want you to pull the trigger. That’s called making your bones. After that if everything went smooth and the books are open ( accepting new members) they will be called and told to dress nicely and they go to take the vow of silence known as omertà. The ceremony you saw above.
