Becoming a player in D&D only requires a few things: becoming a character hoarder, a dice goblin, and to give up 4 hours of your time each session.

@@druid_zephyrus That's why I sort of have an unspoken rule: When I start planning session, I consistently forget about your character due to you not showing up often enough, you're out of my game because that is a sign that you've probably shown up to less than 50% of the games (I tell all of my players this up front, regardless of if they're a friend or a random person). I've only ever had to boot out one player, and he was really understanding of the whole thing and took it super well. I guess it helps that he wasn't really a friend of mine (or anyone else's in the game. Long story). I've never really had an issue with players not showing up outside of this. I'm super transparent with my players, and they're super transparent with me. This goes for all three games that I currently DM.

@@sophiatrocentraisin I am blessed/cursed personally. It isn't my dice. When I first sit down at a session I just instinctively know if I have luck or not. I feel the luck? DM hates me as I am rolling 17+ for EVERYTHING that whole night. I sit down and sigh? The group just pats me on the back knowing I'll be lucky if I see higher than 5 all night. Lady luck is with me more often than not at least. Edit: Oh yeah, I only ever bought one set of metal die. My other 20 sets are all dice my groups put in permanent dice jail and I ended up using them, rolling amazing...and was thus handed the dice to keep.

@@lucasliu7043 Should do, but players don't always. I have a player who's backstory is, as an awakened animal (custom pathfinder race): Elf man hit me. Elf man gone. Me go run. Sooo, yeah. Though I agree with a more extensive backstory, I find it more likely to get minimalistic backstories that I basically have to write out for them.
@piranhaplantX
@piranhaplantX 2 жыл бұрын
@@lucasliu7043 The opposite extreme can be an issue as well. Don't write a novel for your backstory, fill it with too many NPCs and places, and expect your DM to accept all of it. Doing that can trap the DM narratively or interfere with how he built his world. You need to set up just enough detail to make it interesting, and set up potential plot hooks for the DM to take advantage of later. Don't set too much of your character in stone, and definitely don't try to abuse it to try justifying higher stats or fancy items. But aside from that, I'll just say that I'd rather no backstory than too much. But if you don't put a backstory in my game, I'll probably have a talk with you to let you know I'll find a way to fill it in when you act out your character enough.

Ok so here's a fun fact that might help you: Doing that multiple characters thing can actually help you to an extent. It helps you understand how some classes work, and if you go an extra mile to make hypothetical character builds of various levels it helps you get ideas for how all abilities work so you can build a character properly when you go in for a session

@piranhaplantX

I mean, to a point. But none of that really sinks in, until you use these abilities in practice. Especially with specific DM's when it inevitably comes to one of the many things left open for interpretation. My most recent one probably has to be with the Artificer. There was a lot in that class that was left open, or worded on such a way that it could be abused. Like the ability to bag bomb at level two, if you take the RAW interpretation.

2:02 lol forever DMing is exactly why I’m not DMing to start lol. I just started getting into it, but can’t find any groups except one group of gatekeepers. My parents heard me annoyed yet again that the super nice group of DND is 100 miles away, and pipped up “oh, then how about you DM! You love writing, and I’m sure...” “NONONONONONONONONO! I wanna play first!!” “But this would be playing and you would have a group..” “yeah, AND I’D NEVER GET TO BE A PLAYER!!! It’s ALL over the forums how bad forever DMing is I don’t want to get stuck in that!!”

Coincidentally the question "I need how many dice again?" is prevalent in Shadowrun even though it's all d6s... the answer is to go buy one of those 'several dozen dice' yahtzee packs and consider getting more packs as your character levels.
