Tried this last weekend and it was DELICIOUS!! My family and I devoured it all and went back for seconds. We visited Czech in the past and have been longing to eat goulash and this is just like it. We have a family member who is gluten sensitive so the only change we did was changing the regular bread crumbs to gluten-free bread crumbs and honestly none of us who are non-gluten sensitive noticed the difference. Still tasted amazing and like what we had in Czech. Will make this again. Thanks for sharing this recipe! ❤

I made this tonight with the dumplings. It will be something I make once a week from now on. It's utterly delicious and a favorite. Due to meat being expensive, I got a pot roast and cut very small pieces, which make a huge pot for another time too.

My Czech mom cooked this regularly for my brothers and me when were growing up. She still cooks it. An amazingly good tasting meal. The goulash is simple as shown in the video. The dumplings are more challenging because there seems to be some skill and experience required to get them to cook properly. My mom makes it all look simple. The only follow up I'll add is to enjoy this meal with good company. Afterwards relax for hour or maybe go for a walk to really savor what you just ate. Then come back and have a slice of Czech Apple Strudel. Savor that awesome desert as well.

As someone who lived in Czech for 1 year.. everything is spot on! Urquell for the win!! The goulash looks amazing! Nothing like the dumplings with it too. Question: how would you alter this if you didn’t want to use as much onions or even no onions at all? (I know you love onions).
@czechcookbook

Hm goulash actually is supposed to have equal weight of meat as onions. Other meals don’t use this much onion. I don’t think it would even be Czech goulash without onions. The taste would be very different.

I'm hungarian, and I think goulash became a common dish in many countries, especially in eastern/central europe. I had regular, and budvar goulash in Prague, and i loved them. Also I might add, that in Hungary goulash is a soup. It is actually called gulyásleves (or just simply gulyás), which literally means herder's soup. I think a stew type dish called pörkölt was confused with it.

@@czechcookbook oh great. I put a little but also think it would be fine without. I was making it this morning to put it into the crock pot for when I get home later. The weather is getting cool here in Mount Pocono Pa, and I was ready for some of my fall/winter dish. I discovered this recipe 5 years ago and love it. I always go back to the recipe and sometimes reference the video to remember how to make it. Thank you for sharing this recipe.

Would it be okay to brown the meat first?
@czechcookbook
@czechcookbook 5 жыл бұрын
In this dish it is important to brown onions not the meat. If you brown the meat you could burn the paprika, which will get bitter.

@@czechcookbook What if you brown the meat separately and then add it to the pot and cook it?

You can also brown the meat on the roasted onions and add paprika the last after browning.

@@czechcookbook Thank you for the responses. I really love your channel. I'll have to try this recipe. My German grandmother makes a form of goulash which is similar in style but slightly different from this. I've never had it thickened with breadcrumbs like this, but it looks so good. It's interesting because when I was in Hungary the goulash that they made was more brothy like a soup and had different vegetables in addition to the meat.
@czechcookbook

Yes that is very true. I also visited Hungary and noticed that their goulash is actually a soup. They call this dish differently I think they call beef goulash perkelt.

what Czechs and Slovaks call Hungarian goulash with dumplings is perkelt with Hungarians (without potatoes and thick), they do not even know the dumplings ... There is a pot goulash in the form of soup with potatoes ... check out KZbin videos called Magyar gulyás

@@czechcookbook Rats. It was absolutely cute and part of the fun of making this dish! Your comments about chopping the onions and having coffee flavored like paprika were just two lovely things! I have to purchase the good paprika online from The Spice House or Penzy's because my grocery stores here in the deep South have plain stuff or, if I'm lucky (!) smoked. Ugh.

@@barrymckinzey1121 I am glad to hear you enjoyed my first video. I took it down mainly because my personal life that is in the old video is not like that anymore. When people commented about it it wasn't easy for me to read. You can find the good Hungarian paprika on Amazon. Smoked one is definitely not the best to use. It will completely change the flavor. Wishing you success in finding the right paprika. :)
