Hello, David! It was great to see you in Kentucky and share some interesting after-supper conversation. Every single time I walked passed your booth, there was your wonderful wife all alone. Oh well, glad you stayed busy and we'll catch up the next time!

FYi. The green drone comb was around way before mite trapping was a thing. shock upon shock but queen breeders actially use them for the sole purpose of better mated queens.

Hummm. I wonder if having a piping sound would trigger the queen to try to go kill an emerging queen? Hummmmmm. Interesting

I see it as a good thing. People are trying and even if it doesn't work now, they may reconfigure it and make it work.

Odd, test comment worked? Maybe because I had dollar amounts in my previous comment? One more try: Love your way of thinking Dave! Always look for ways to improve bee keeping! And I loved the expo, was great hearing and seeing you in real life! I came up with an idea on my own, and wanted to share with you, to hear your thoughts on it. Sometimes you may end up with a weak colony, due to mites or other things, and when winter comes, if population is too low, they may freeze to death. I thought I would try to add something to make them survive the winter, so I ordered a seedling heat mat. It's very cheap, but not going to mention dollar amounts this time. I got one that is 10 x 20, and it fits perfectly in my 8 frame hive. Hoping this will help, so they at least won't freeze to death now. Think this could be helpful, especially for the hobby bee keeper like myself.

@@beek oh really!! Great minds think alike! :) Would love to hear how it works out for you! What temp are you going to aim for? During the expo sessions I heard someone (Etienne Tardif) say 18 C or 64 F is the most optimal temp for bees to consume least resources, so that's what I'm currently trying to aim for. Although, if you want the queen to produce more bees, I guess it would be better to get it up to the low 90's...? This could change winter survival big time! :)

@@beek we are fixing to get some really cold weather, single digits, this coming weekend in IL, so it will be very interesting to see how the heat mats fair in that cold weather. So far I've been running my heat mat since Dec 30th, and the temp has stayed in the mid 50s to mid 60s. Also top insulated the hive to make sure to prevent condensation up top.

If you could mimic the sound of a queen piping using a small electronic device inside of a "trap" of some sort you might be able to get a queen to enter it...

The Expo was great. It was nice meeting you, David. I really enjoyed your speech on Saturday, so up lifting. Love you're video's as always! I'm liking your idea. Would maybe work with a queen pheromone maybe trick her into thinking she has a queen intruding in her hive?

Fork can be improved. Needs blunt barbs on each prong so you don't drop your meatballs on the floor. also needs a laser guidance system so you can spear your meatball while it's rolling along the floor. 😅

Those green drone frames are a great tool to use for mite control IF USED PROPERLY ! If not, they are a breeding ground for mites. I hear many people using them to raise drones for mating. Regardless, there will always be drones available to mate with your queens. You couldn't eliminate them all if you tried !!! But if you leave the drone frames in the hive and allow the drones to hatch, you are also allowing probably 4 times as many mites to be born in the drone cells which is where they prefer to be because drone take the longest to develop. So by NOT taking the frame out and freezing it, they are breeding mites !

Something I've thought of, my idea was a little sounder, this plays another queens trumpeting call, may attract her in through the kill other queen response. Unsure if it would also attract workers though.

Putting a queen cell, unhatched, in a cage, one way in and no way out, should attract a queen to kill the cell thus trapping the queen. How to keep the workers out might be a problem.
