Beer Review # 1554 Russian River Brewing Pliny The Elder Double IPA 2014 Re Review

We are out in SF for vacation and my wife just came back to our airbnb with a bottle she found for me. It was bottled 2 weeks ago!! I love her. It delivered, wow is the right word still in 2019. I am from Indiana so fresh Bells Two Hearted gives me a similar reaction back home. Glad to finally try this legend. Thanks Greg!

I've read great things about this beer, too bad I haven't found it in Canada. On a side note, It was great to see how excited you were before drinking this beer. It really makes me feel obligated to got my hands on it.

The monk Caffè in Philadelphia has it on tap regularly, not to mention that it also has great food. Balanced is the words I used to describe it. Love this beer. Cheers

Greg, I couldn't agree more. I just stopped by their brewery in Santa Rosa tonight and I was very impressed by this beer. I still find it hard to believe its 100 IBUs. Great review Greg! Cheers!

Hop heaven! I got lucky and had a guy that got one two me two weeks after bottled on date and oh boy was it a friggin' delight. Full of grapefruit and citrusy, lemon peel and tangerines. I swear I guzzled it man, it was so balanced and refreshing that once I got into it it just kept on goin down. Hell if we got this in VA the hell with having one bottle all time I would keep a case because I could easily drink six or eight of these in a session and not be the least bit burnt out on it. May be hammered but definitely not burnt out on the taste buds. Awesome review for an awesome beer. Cheers!

Fantastic beer, to be sure. I'm happy that I work in Santa Rosa and can make it to the brewery once a week for lunch. As for getting two cases in PA, good luck. FYI, even at the brewery there's a 12 beer limit on bottles to go.

Cases now are easily available in the Bay Area. A well stocked grocery now has up to 10 Russian River choices to choose from, all refrigerated of course. Open your wallet, it ain't cheap.

Good review. Its very hard to get Pliny even here in Southern California because by the time a store gets a shipment in they are already bought. People actually stalk the truck driver that brings the beer it's crazy.

Alex went a few years ago, at the time they just started supplying some major cain stores, Whole Foods and others, limited supply, they said, maybe now they let you purchase cases, I have not been there since, Whole Foods is the last few times I bought it, thank you for the information, I would buy a few cases too, Cheers!!!!

Such a great beer. The younger is fantastic as well! I've yet to see this on a shelf, but make a 2 hour trip a few times a year to grab some bottles.

Hey greg, pliny is definitely world class. But your mind will be blown away when try Supplication. It's seriously the best sour I've ever had, one of my favorite beers period. I think it's better than pliny.

***** - Greg, I dont think anyone is selling cases of this. Even at the brewery its a 6 bottle limit. Everywhere else around CA is usually limit 1, but some places let you take 2. It really is tough to accumulate these beers, ha. World class for sure. Cheers!

I live in New England and have friends in Vermont I visit often so I'm lucky cause I've gotten to have heady topper tons of times but this beer I've heard amazing things and is the west coast heady topper I'm so curious to see what it's like may need to trade for it. But trust me Greg that Maine Beer dinner in your fridge will blow your hair back and knock your socks off as well!

Someone gifted me this beer. Less than a month old. So damn good. Greg, i don't know if you're able to get Nikasi Tricerahops, but man that is a good DIPA as well. Not rare like Pliny.

There are beers that have stronger hop aroma and more profound bitterness like Three Floyds Dreadnaught or Stone Enjoy By but there are no rivals when it comes to the balance and sheer class of this brew by Vinnie Cilurzo. This almost reminds me of aged belgian golden strongs that are smooth as a cucumber with silky mouthfeel. And on top of that hop bouquet to die for. I'll drink to that but not Pliny because chances of getting another bottle to Finland is 0.06% (happened to get one as a souvenir from California).

For the money and the much more ease of access for us Virginians, i'll take stone enjoy by IPA any day over Pliny. Don't get me wrong like I said its frigging balanced to the makes and the flavor meld perfect in this brew and it makes it so damn drinkable but as far as double IPA's for price and availability, there's no beating stone enjoy by in my book, just imo. Again great review and cheers my Virginia hop loving' brother!

Shops in San Francisco will only sell one bottle per customer. There have been a few bribery scandals of people getting two bottles. After I did the moonwalk, handstand and body twerk City Beer would not sell me a second bottle.

I agree totally Greg - it's GREAT. Pliny is the 'cleanest' tasting beer out there...amazingly fresh & clean tasting. I hope someone sends you a Bootleggers 'Knuckle Sandwich' or a Alpine 'Exponential Hoppiness' to review...it'll be fun to see you bald & barefoot in the next reviews! Got a woody...whaaaaat???
