I'm on a mission to reduce the amount of single use items in my home AND utilise my sewing fabric scraps!
This is the first video in a series where I show you the ways I'm going to achieve this, and hopefully I might inspire you too.
Today I'm sharing one method of maxing Beeswax Food Wraps (there are other methods, such as one on the Closet Case Patterns blog - do check that out if you would rather not use the oven). These are a great alternative to using cling film or tin foil to wrap your food in. Leftovers, snacks, your packed lunch.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Scrap fabric of various sizes. Cotton lawn, poplin or viscose/rayon worked best in my tests
Pinking shears
Baking tin/sheet
Beeswax (here is where I bought mine: www.amazon.co.... )
Chord of some sort
Clothes Pegs
An oven!

I love this series! It is my goal to reduce my use of plastics, and this will be a great way to store food in the kitchen. I live in Florida, so the heat may not work well for transporting food. I'll give it a go, but may have to still use glass containers for that. These will make lovely gifts as well. Thank you!
@Threadquarters
@Threadquarters 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the heat with you will be considerably different from in NI so I really don't know how they will fare! But its definitely worth a shot, and if not then as you say, glass containers are perfect.

Hi Suzie! This is a brilliant idea to use instead of foil or plastic 💝 I have plenty of viscose/rayon and cotton lawn in my scraps box so this will very handy. I've started to make project bags to use up spare fabric and plan to make zipper pouches too. Pretty fabric is more aesthetically pleasing than cling film any day 😑 I'm looking forward to more of your ideas, so yay to utilising scraps = less waste!! X

this is a wonderful idea. I am using reusable plastic containers and they eve really will need to be trashed. can the old beeswax coated cotton fabric be thrown into the compost bin when you eventually are ready to toss out. how do you store them between uses
@Threadquarters
@Threadquarters 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I think they would be compostable! To store I just make sure they are clean and then fold up and store in a drawer in the kitchen (they stay clean/aren't contaminated by anything).

Wow - what a neat, neat idea! Hmmm - if you used Liberty Tana Lawn fabric scraps, they would be designer wraps! The mint green fabric with Polka Dots from Sew Over It! I haven’t done anything with mine yet. That watch is adorable. I love the band on it especially.
@Threadquarters
@Threadquarters 5 жыл бұрын
Ha, Liberty wraps would be amazing! And yes, that's the same spot that you managed to pick up! I discovered that it's actually a Lady McElroy fabric, so also rather designer, lol.

Oh my gosh!! You are in my brain ha ha :-) I have spent hours this week watching various tutorials on this. Suuuch a good way to use up scraps and also being a bit more thoughtful about waste. Love this so much :-) How clever are bees! Have you also been Marie Kondo(ing) your house? ;-) (if you haven't heard of her check out her book, audio book or netflix series). Take Care, and thanks for your lovely tutorial. Gabrielle

Hi... Love the idea of this but how does the wax react to say a picnic on the beach in hot sun?
@Threadquarters
@Threadquarters 5 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I'm afraid I haven't tested it out, and I'm going to guess that your heat will be considerably more than any heat we get over in NI, so you may have to just test it out for yourself. But the wraps are perfect for storing things in the fridge so even if they don't work in the hot sun, they can still be used.

Don’t know if you are aware jojoba oil added to the wax + rosin makes the fabric easier to manage authentic fabrics are not recommended,, the best is actually linen.

Haya. With the double gauze, perhaps make small cubes to put food items in, as the gauze is a lot stronger then the container made from it will be stronger, just an idea. I don`t use any wraps, with the exception of occasional tin foil, I usually just rewash small plastic containers, but these are great. Thanku for sharing. Anna.
