Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 14 in C♯ minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2.
0:00 Adagio sostenuto
4:44 Allegretto
06:58 Presto agitato
The sound of the piano in the time of Beethoven was quite different than that of the modern piano, and in this video you will hear the original colors, textures, and the inner voices of the music as they sounded at the time of composition. This work is now available for the first time in 4K, ultra high definition video, with 96/24 audio on a period instrument.
Beethoven wrote the rubric "senza sordini" in two different ways on the music. It's not likely that Beethoven or any composer would repeat the instructions; if that's the case, the dual instructions are single: one for each stave. Kerman found the endless debate as to the meaning of the instructions quite amusing because it pinpointed diametrically opposed interpretations in musicology.
This video is a coproduction of the Valley of the Moon Music Festival and Voices of Music.

After many years of exploring, performing and recording the chamber music of the Classical and Romantic periods on period instruments, founders Tanya Tomkins and Eric Zivian have come to the conclusion that these well-known pieces can be experienced in a completely new way, not only through the unique qualities of period instruments but also through a full understanding of period style. For the past ten years, directors Eric and Tanya have immersed themselves in Classical and Romantic music on period instruments: recording, performing, and teaching these pieces from a historic perspective; this experience led to the idea of starting a music festival devoted to performing and teaching this repertory on period instruments. The Valley of the Moon Music Festival is not just an exciting series of summer concerts in the beautiful town of Sonoma, but it is also a place for emerging musicians to thrive as they incorporate this chamber music into their professional lives.
This video is a unique collaboration between the Valley of the Moon Festival and the Voices of Music Great Works Project. The Great Works Project makes Classical Music available free anywhere in the world, and these materials can be used by students and teachers and as part of the curriculum of schools and conservatories. Our video channel is one of the largest and most accessible classical music channels in the world.Fortepiano by Paul Poletti, after Jean-Louis Dulcken, 1795

There is really no substitute to the fortepiano to obtain those dark, warm, and very complex tones full of overtones... I can imagine two hundred years ago Beethoven surrounded by a group of friends playing this masterpiece to the utter bewilderment and amazement of his listeners...

We may be experiencing the launch of an era in which the standard practice is to perform piano music on the type of piano for which it was written. Some will say the fortepiano lack sufficient volume for a large hall, but high quality electronic amplification is preferable to the use of a piano that does not do the music justice.

As written for the fortepiano of it's time, Beethoven indicated this in the score for (senza sordino, lift the dampers). Carl Czerny said that by the 1840's that the first movement could no longer be played as written (the pianos had changed that much). Also the Viennese Pianos had knee levels (only English Fortepianos had pedals, a carry over from the latter half 18th century harpsichords).

I have been listening to this interpretation for a while, yet after looking more closely, even more nuances appear. Try listening to it with increased volume with your best headphones and paying attention to separate hand parts, but be careful. The 3rd movement feels absolutely fiery and furious in some parts, almost makes you want to just jump out of the chair. The recording quality is amazing, and Eric's masterful interpretation too, with insane clarity and spot-on dynamics. Also, is it just me, or does this piano lack a pedal? No cheating your way out of holding notes properly, making the interpretation even more impressive
@davidbooth508
@davidbooth508 10 ай бұрын
Something I learned just today about the forte piano the "pedals" can be knee levers or hand stops. According to Beethoven, the damper was to remain open during the entire sonata, allowing the notes from the previous measures to affect the tonal qualities of the following measures. The forte piano has a faster decay resulting in less sustain than the modern pianos so the resulting tone shapes from the previous measures would not be felt in as many measures as the modern piano. According to a music theorist I heard on this, the notes were designed to be heard in conjunction with the notes of the previous measures to get the full experience of the sound.

Nice to hear this piece realized on an instrument closer to what Beethoven might have had. The brighter timbre lends itself well to the _allegretto_ and _presto_ movements. The absence of pedals does pose a challenge in the first movement, which likes more of a _legato_ articulation. I prefer to interpret the _Adagio_ as fluidly as possible, avoiding the micro-syncopations employed in the melody here.

Riveting performance! The period instrument brings such an intimate character to the piece and highlights different harmonies, it's amazing. Also delightful to see the performer keeping to Beethoven's marked tempi! I have a question about the pedaling, though. Doesn't Beethoven indicate for the sustain pedal to be depressed throughout the whole first movement? It doesn't look like this pianoforte has a pedal. Is there another way to modulate the damping on the strings or would the sustain on this instrument have been considered adequate to achieve the same effect?
@VoicesofMusic
@VoicesofMusic 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question with a complicated answer. Beethoven does not mention pedals, he writes "senza sordino", literally, without mutes (dampers). On this old style piano, the dampers are controlled with knee levers under the keyboard. In the video, we have filmed some clips from the side so you can see the dampers off the strings. Scholars have endlessly debated what the meaning of "senza sordino" is, and one of the Voices of Music directors did a project with the Beethoven scholar Joseph Kerman on this topic. The short answer is that it is difficult to know the composer's intent, and that makes for some interesting interpretations.
