I've never heard the 1st movement cadenza played with such fiery passion. I'm in awe.
@freeziac2 жыл бұрын
For those pianists who would like to learn this, I offer some humble advice: Don't be afraid to really exaggerate the dynamics. Beethoven wrote this during the sturm und drang of the classical era. I quote a professor who I played this for: Out of all the Beethoven concertos, I think this one is the most plosive. This is a vocal term bu I’m certain you can apply this concept when you understand the definition. Plosive means: adjective 1. denoting a consonant that is produced by stopping the airflow using the lips, teeth, or palate, followed by a sudden release of air. noun 1. a plosive speech sound. The basic plosives in English are t, k, and p (voiceless) and d, g, and b (voiced). The 1st movement is a lot easier than the other two, but practice it slowly and carefully. The cadenza especially needs intense work. The 2nd movement is notoriously difficult for its tender, slow nature and voicing work. Practice it with a good ear. I feel like everyone underestimates the rondo. Its notes might seem easier, but getting it up to speed is very difficult, especially the coda. Metronome will help! Lastly, enjoy this work, like any great piano piece. Every once in a while, step back to enjoy the progress you've made. Sincerely, Jackson T.
@tedzhang41682 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your advice!! I think Barenboim once talked about the effect of the German language in B's work too, about how the plosive-ness of German framed B's music into the same angular shape. Language really is a stunningly important factor for composers. And especially thank you for boosting my confidence in playing B's music more dramatically (although it is really a difficult task) !

This is the finest piano concerto ever written, interpreted and played in modern history of music. The first movement is simply tectonic and Shakespearean in implosion and grandeur. The movement simply haunts you to the eternal ocean of love and truth. What a conductor and the player on the keyboard. If Beethoven was here in the hall, he would have kissed them, I bet. You won’t ever forget it if you hear once,isn’t it? I see the Universe in this concerto. Bravo Maestros!!

The Maestro looks tired in this video(compare with the ‘83 video of the two Brahms Concertos. And then I find out that this performance of 3rd Beethoven was in September, 1989. Suffering from Emphysema, etc, he died on October 14, 1990 at 72. So he had only 13 of months of life left at time of this recording. I guess he was entitled to look a little tired.

There is something so sublime, grand, brooding, powerful and delicate, and beautiful beyond words in this piece. Richter has always been my favorite pianist for this but Zimerman, whom I heard for the first time this evening, has stolen his place I'm afraid. I can't avoid tears when listen to this concerto, it is simply divinely beautiful. At times it seemed as if I was listening to Shakespeare, or watching some drama unfolding that intertwined every human emotion with the infinite variations of nature. This concerto has no equal in my opinion. No, not stoned, just in awe lol.

my first piano conerto into the classical music world. First time listening to it around age 17, it came to me as an exchange of cassette with my classmate. At the time I had a cassette of Mozart's K525 and he said he loved Mozart's music most since it made people smarter(he did indeed as he later on advanced to get a PhD in Theoretical Mathematics)... and I got this No.3 from him... used to listen to it a lot at those stressful high school times where classwork was intense(plus the sleepless nights pressuring by the college entry exams).... turning out I favored more on Mozart during college and likewise loved the minor piano concerts most, the top two are No.20(d minor) and No.24(c minor)... and the No.24 made a full circle back on me, ostensibly because Beethoven's No.3 paid much tribute to Mozart's No.24

Ludwig von Beethoven is the son of a tenor in Elector’s Chapel of Cologne who inherited a penchant for dinking from his mother, Beethoven’s mother was daughter of a cook and it was, on the other hand, sweet and good. He had seven children of which only three survived: Ludwig, Kaspar and Johann. Beethoven did the summary studies that don’t seem tolast beyond eleven years. He evidenced, however, a great tendency towards music, from an early age and his father taught him to play the piano, violin and organ. At theage of nine, he was placed in the care of Christian Neefe, organist, who introduced him to the German masters of 18th century, after Bach, and taught himto know the masters of composition. In 1787, the Elector sends the young musician to Vienna to study with Mozart, but due to the death of his mother, he returns to Bonn. Aware of his shortcomings, he enrolled at the University where he studied German literature and philosophy. Five years later, he loses his father. However, he is supported by friendly figures such as Madame von Breuning and the Earl of Waldstein. He has been in Vienna for a month now to study with Haydn. This knowledge is later completed with the help of Albrechtsberger and Salieri. At the time, he enjoyed life in society that enjoyed him as a composer and pianist.Find well-paid jobs and honestly sell your music.In 1803, he organized a large concert at the Teatro An der Wien, where he presented Christ on the Mount of Olives, the First and Second Symphonies and the Third Concert. Despite Fidelio’s failure in 1805, and the mediocre success of the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies and the Fourth Piano Concerto, he became the most celebrated musician in Europe. His love life was less successful than the musical one, mainly due to his vanity as a sensibility.His true drama was undoubtedly the deafness whose first symptoms were felt in 1798-1799 and which provoked the cry of despair in the “Testament of Heiligenstat” addressed to his brothers, however, he managed to overcome depression in 1802 and wrote a set of incredible musical work until his death on March 26, 1827, consisting of masses, one opera, symphonies, piano concertos, a violin concerto, sonatas, etc,etc. This concerto is a masterpiece for the emotional sensitivity it conveys to which we cannot remain indifferent. Beethoven was an amazing composer who makes us vibrate, whether in calmest moments or those of greatest intensity. The pianist is fabulous in technique and sublime in the sensitivity he conveys. The orchestra and direction are magnificent. Thanks for this fantastic recording.

20:22 I think many film music writers inspired them by that passage . It's very similar to some film musics especially Ennio Morricone. But it's amazing 😁👏👏

This video is just perfect. One of the best pianist of the 20th century, one of the best conductor of the 20th century and the Wiener philharmonic; one of the best philharmonic from all history. And a wonderful concerto from one of the most important composers of all history of music. What else could I say, they also used good cameras....

I just love this so much. The musicians capture all the human emotions in one great musical work. Every time I listen I hear something new and joyous or sad.
