The set up of the movie could've been so much shorter. I have no clue why we spent so long trying to get all the pieces in place for the rest of the plot because it really felt like the writers were like "we need this thing to happen later so how do we get there? Lets just take the audience on this journey with us cause we need to pad the runtime" the final act was the most entertaining so I'm glad there was big payoff for what I had to sit through earlier. Movie was trying to do much with too many things. They wanted to do some sort of commentary on different generations of women dealing with loss but it was buried in everything else that was going on. They had like 3 scripts and smushed them together haphazardly. Because they were focusing on so many stories, all of them felt underdeveloped and rushed. Also if it was about motherhood and powerful women why didn't we get a scene with Lydia making the point that Barbara Maitland was a much more impactful mother figure for her??? Delia was just sort of there. There was such a strong message of found family in the first on that this second one ignores. It seems like this sequel is pushing the narrative that "your family is your family deal with it". I also have to point out that they give the audience a problem - Lydia can't see Atrid's father- and the when we finally meet the father they don't ask about that at all. Leaving the answer to why she can't see him up in the air. They pretty much give the audience a plot hole that didn't need to be there. Overall I was really frustrated while watching the movie because the atmosphere is on point. The score is on point. The special effects are on point. The performances are on point. They just gave us a horribly messy and convoluted story.

I enjoyed the movie, though not feeling satisfied afterwards. I think, the plotlines would have worked out much, MUCH better in a mini series, which would have given the writers the opportunity to flesh out especially the villians and antagonists more. After the movie I had the same craving of wanting to see more - - of the night Jeremy where had slaughtered his parents and which events had led to this. - of the movie detective and the stunt that killed him - of Monica Belucci's character and her soul-sucking cult - of the soul train and the 70’s style ghost cops and these russian guards that looked more inspired by Boney M.'s Rasputin rather than anyhing else. - of how the Maitlands found a loop hole and got out of afterlife limbo - in form of another claymation scene - and that dog we see, when Beetlejuice lipsyncs about the ones he had loved before. Also I still don't know how I feel about this Chucky-like baby BJ and why it's there. Aside from all criticism, I actually felt the original, wild, fun-loving Burton in this film again, I had considered already dead and burried. Edit for not being a native speaker.

Perfect summary, I totally agree. As for the baby, I very much believe it was a reference to Peter Jackson‘s „Braindead“ (sometimes also titled „Dead Again“). Before Lord of the Rings, Jackson made several movies that were very much like early Burton movies, only even more zany, weird and absurd. The baby biting Lydia‘s leg was probably a reference to a scene from the 1968 movie „Barbarella“. The whole sequel had so many references and movie quotes in it that I am quite certain about my assumptions.

I don’t know if it’s because I watched it in my native language (Latin Spanish) but some of the dialogues sounded as if they were written by a teenage Wattpad author, some jokes were unnecessary long, I get that the movies have the over exaggeration and ridiculousness as a key factor of Beetlejuice (I absolutely love that) but in this one the humor was basically dead, it wasn’t intelligent. I get that Lydia is now and adult and completely different with the Lydia we used to know but I can’t even see a resemblance of the OG Lydia in her, like apart from the clothes, nothing was in there. Also I can’t help but see Astrid as the edgy annoying character, I know she was fed up by her mother but it’s like she was written by a 50+ year old man, she only came across as stupidly annoying (for me). What no-one seems to have noticed (at least I haven‘t read it anywhere) is that the significant time-lapse between the world of the living and the dead has been scrapped. They should have removed Delores entirely and Beetlejuice should have been summoned because Lydia was desperate to save her daughter from the afterlife. The focus should definitely have been ENTIRELY about the relationship between Lydia and Astrid... it was just so completely fragmented. Especially since Astrid was the best part of the film. The original film didn't have nearly as much flash but it was much more endearing because of it. A simple story about family.... this one was more style then substance and had no problem breaking the rules set by the first film and switching things around even when it didn't make sense to. For example the musical moments were to do with the Maitlands and not at all to do with Beetlejuice... but this film forgot that... I really liked the character development for Beetlejuice himself as a character. While he’s still creepy (I think the beetlebaby wasn’t real just his idea of a silly practical joke/illusion), he does a lot of more actually thoughtful and kind acts for Lydia and her family like sending Jeremy to hell to protect Astrid and exposing Rory so he could no longer exploit Lydia anymore. Even though he goes about it the wrong way I think it’s kind of cute that he is legitimately deeply in love with Lydia and would do anything for her. In a weird kind of twisted way Beetlejuice is a far better option as a husband to Lydia and stepfather to Astrid than Rory ever was! I almost wonder if they make a third movie I wonder if Beetlejuice will have a full on redemption arc, as this movie definitely feels like it’s setting it up?!

The bigger potholes to me were: A. How did Beetlejuice survive the sandworm attack from the first movie? B. Isnt time warped in the sand worm realm and wouldnt the teenage boy murderer have been in that realm if he stepped outside his house (aka where astrid found him)? ---this is less of a plot hole and more of an unresolved issue: Why couldnt lydia see her ex hubby? Was he busy working in the underworld? We never got a straight answer on that.

I had fun watching the movie but I felt like they had too many plots going on that ended up getting everything rushed through. Monica Bellucci and William Dafoe’s characters really didn’t do much and Monica especially felt like wasted potential. I also feel like Jeremy wasn’t necessary at all, instead of him tricking Astrid it could have just been Beetlejuice that told her she could see her father again. They added 6 new characters yet 4 weren’t truly needed or actually interesting/done well. I definitely think it’s one of the better sequels and I really liked certain parts but I also wouldn’t be upset if it never existed (except maybe the MacArthur Park wedding scene since that’s was a lot of fun)

They could’ve split the storylines up, make this one about the ex-girlfriend (she looked AMAZING and was wasted!!!) and the next one about Astrid and Jeremy, or vise versa. Instead there was TOO MUCH going on and the pacing wasn’t good at all in my opinion!! No real climax like the first! I hope they do another one but I’m sticking to the original when saying it’s better. :/

17:37 I wouldn't call this a "plothole" but rather a retcon. In the 30+ years between movies attitudes about depression, suicide, and mental health have drastically changed in the public consciousness. Changing that detail was likely their way of avoiding the uncomfortable, insensitive way the original made fun of self-harm. Is it a good retcon? Was the change necessary? Is it just political correctness run amok? I'd say no but it's pretty subjective.
@DrDeadsy424 ай бұрын
You can accuse Burton of many things, but certainly not of political correctness.
@isabellep3294 ай бұрын
i feel like the randomness and anti-climax of the climax fit somehow. I hope there will be a director's cut released at some point because I would watch an hour more of this film with all of the scenes I have a sneaking suspicion were cut for time. All in all, I had a delightful time despite the obvious fallings-short and I agree, I might enjoy this film more than the original, but I'll have to rewatch both to decide. You put everything very well, very nice video!

Beetlejuice 2 was not nearly as bad as I expected, but it is definitely not better than the first. The first is a cohesive movie that manages the illusion that this is all happening in the same world/setting. Beetlejuice 2 feels like a music video/visual album. That visual album does look wonderful and is made up of very entertaining parts, but it doesn't succeed at being a cohesive story and I think that's a problem that originates in the script. This script lacks restraint and desperately needed someone to edit the hell out of it. There were too many story threads to tell in the length of a movie and the result was that many of them were half baked and pointless to the actual plot. I honestly wonder if the writer works predominantly in TV and is just not used to writing movie stories. As pointed out in the video, there are too many villains, and that isn't a nit pick but a major problem. Bellucci's character is pointless, yet gets this long entrance and we are often taken away from the story to see her pointlessly kill people. They needed to actually commit to her as the primary antagonist, or axe the character. I'd bet money they added her in after the story had already been developed because Burton wanted to work with his gf. If he's insistent on that, then you need to majorly rework the story, not just shoehorn her in. This video also hit the nail on head about Delia, she serves almost no function in the story and her interactions are given almost no weight or priority, which is such a disservice to the actor, character and original movie. I wish they had focused this story on the dynamic between Delia, Lydia and the daughter with conflict stemming from Beetlejuice/Dead Dad(s). Also they could have just not included the daughter at all tbh- stories can be marketable without focusing on teens and young adults. But they for sure should have gotten rid of both bf story lines as they both supremely sucked imo. Believe it or not, it is possible to tell stories about women without the inclusion of romantic conflict. Idk, it just really bothers me that so many big budget/pop corn movies are not carefully produced from start to finish- and maybe I'm being nostalgic, but I think this problem is a lot more common today. With all that time, money and effort, big budget film makers should feel a major responsibility to produce something that is as good as it can reasonably be. So if there are such obvious major problems at the script level, it honestly makes me angry.

I also just wish we had more interaction between the female leads.

It was nowhere near as good as the original, just another empty cashgrab nostalgia thing. It could have been a simple & sweet story about mother-daughter relationship à la The Little Mermaid 2, but they ruined it with multiple plotlines that make no sense, several grossly underdeveloped antagonists, lots of hollow references to the original, and even more cringe and unfunny "modern day social satire", and zero emotional core to connect to.

YES, you put so many of my thoughts about the movie into words! I think I like the sequel better than the first--or at least, it helps me enjoy the original Beetlejuice (which I didn't watch as a kid and have no nostalgia for) more. They should have cut Delores (but also, who can blame Tim Burton for including her?) to give more time to any of the other plots. Also, Wolf Jackson stole the scene every time he was on screen. I was so impressed that Dafoe gave us a character who could rival Keaton for my attention.

I feel like I liked a lot of the ideas in the movie but none of them really had enough room to breathe. Everything could work if they had given it a bit more time to simmer, or saved it for another movie. It felt like the all the emotional weight was missing. Like Astrid and Jeremy, Astrid and her dad, the fact Lydia's parents and boyfriend died in a week. Even if they said her biomom is still alive that seems like it would be traumatizing. Maybe that's the intent with the dream ending...? There wasn't really a resolution for Lydia like there was in the original. Maybe in the third she just marries Beetlejuice because she wants to.

@yanderefangirl83174 ай бұрын
I actually laughed so much in the theater when I saw this movie. I think the point of the film, is that it’s not healthy to keep yourself stuck in the past. Lydia had a difficult time moving on from her past traumas, Astrid never recovered from her father’s death and resented her mother because of it, and Dolores wanted Beetlejuice all to herself despite their murderous divorce. Dolores was literally Beetlejuice’s past coming back to haunt him. Plus, the ghost boy tricking Astrid into giving him her life shows that, despite how she acts like she knows better than her mother, Astrid is still a naive teenaged girl who occupies herself with all these ‘save the world’ causes because it helps her feel close to her late father. The stepmom was pretty weird but I think that was the point, because her weird artist personality was what made her so funny, but she also clearly loves her family even though they’re not related by blood. Lydia’s relationship with her manager shows that she rushed into a relationship because she was lonely, especially since her first marriage didn’t end well and her relationship with her daughter became strained. She also used her ability to communicate with ghosts as a way to avoid opening up to living people. Also, we see more of this purgatory type place and we see that most souls do go to Heaven or h-e-double hockey sticks, or they’re given a job helping souls go to where they need to go. And Willem Defoe’s character was just outright hilarious. And I love how they kind of made fun of woke stuff, like ‘Stop Oil’ and politically correct stuff.

I had a lot of fun with this film and I'm not usually into dark humour so that was a surprise. It's definitely one of the better legacy sequels for old properties than most. Like you I felt the villains were too many and not enough time. Couple of things I think that could have worked it out would be: Cut Delores' character. While I loved her intro and the look and design you're right she doesn't do much or contribute a lot to the story. You could still have Defoe's detective character maybe he's trying to track down Beetlejuice because BJ is constantly "bending" the rules by making himself appear to Lydia in the mortal world. Or have instead he's trying to track down a ghost murderer killing humans but surprise surprise it's Jeremy who was luring humans to his house and possessing them to kill them for fun and get out of his house because they couldn't see him. But then seeing Astrid could see him then he got the idea of having her trade her life for his [and like you said have them meet a few times before he tricks her on Halloween so his trickery is more gut felt]. Then Lydia could still call on BJ for help and it goes as it did in the film except for Delores showing up at the wedding maybe Richard could return once more to protest and help out giving him a bit more to do and that gives Astrid the time to break free of BJ's control and summon the sandworm who attacks, then eats Rory then stops BJ with the contract news. OR Don't have Jeremy in the story but keep Delores who keeps doing her thing. Show that Astrid is so desperate to see her father and angry at Rory keeping her mother co-dependant and distant from her that it gives BJ a way in to manipulate her and he's only more desperate now that Delores is loose to escape to the living world. Maybe Astrid mutters Beetlejuice under her breath as she leaves the attic giving BJ the power to form a connection and start giving Astrid the idea to go into the afterlife? Then it goes as before where Lydia summons BJ to help her save Astrid, while Richard saves Astrid in the Netherworld. Then at the wedding the whole trick and manipulation by Beetlejuice is revealed. And some more scenes between Delia and Lydia and Astrid could have been great like Delia maybe saying how she envied Barbara because she always felt Lydia preferred her over Delia. Little scenes like that could have helped.

I enjoyed Jeremy as a plot device to force Lydia to reach out to Beetlejuice. And even more it made sense how quickly he was disposed of as it demonstrates Beetlejuices strength and how op he is. I think the other 2 ghostly villains were disposed of too quickly. It was too easy for them to die.

I watched these out of order bc I live under a rock I guess and honestly I loved this movie so much! It made the first feel like a gimmicky prequel which is s strange feeling. It's weird bc I always heard people reference "Lydia's wedding dress" and assumed her and Beetlejuice had a romance and felt it unsettling to go back and see the actual storyline l-ol. But bc of that, now I wish there was a version where there was potential for that as it fulfills my soul's desire for a twisted romantic horror comedy similar to Edward Scissorhands. I think this movie had all the right elements, but should have been broken up into smaller films to create a complex storyline with room for character development and even more space for Burton to play with the details.

I only have one problem with this film - it feels like it was an abandoned television show pilot thanks to all of the subplots and side characters that don't contribute or coalesce thematically to the core story. I would've been so much happier if the film was just about Lydia, her daughter, the boyfriend and Beetlejuice himself. Everything else is so strong and yet it sucked so hard at the end when you realize all of the extraneous narratives and characters....didn't really contribute to the story in any meaningful way.
