After being unleashed by Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara (Geena Davis), Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) shows his gratitude in a most obnoxious way.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Thanks to the carelessness of a cute little dog, newlyweds Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin are killed in a freak auto accident. Upon arriving in the outer offices of Heaven, the couple finds that, thanks to a century's worth of bureaucratic red tape, they're on a long celestial waiting list. Before they can earn their wings, Davis and Baldwin must occupy their old house as ghosts for the next fifty years. Alas, the house is now owned by insufferable yuppies Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones. Horrified at the prospect of sharing space with these obnoxious interlopers, Davis and Baldwin do their best to scare O'Hara and Jones away, but their house-haunting skills are pathetic at best. In desperation, the ghostly couple engage the services of a veteran scaremeister: a yellow-haired, snaggle-toothed, profane, flatulent "gonzo" spirit named Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton). The problem: Beetlejuice cannot be trusted-especially when he falls in love with O'Hara and Jones' gloomy, black-clad teenaged daughter Winona Ryder. Maybe because before that, he gives totally legitimate and impressive qualifications. Plus, back in the late '80s, The Exorcist was still seen as a harrowing experience. It was kind of a bumout to see the directors cut in the theater with a bunch of people tittering at lines that were shocking nearly 30 years earlier, but had long since become part of the cultural lexicon.

The outfit he's wearing appears to be a tour guide uniform, and his look is incredibly mouldy. Add in what Jeranhound said and we can guess at most that he was a tour guide who possibly died via poisoning or drunk to death or drug overdose and whose body wasn't found until at least 2 to 3 days after death. Edit: Also, the style of clothes and the timeline of tourism would indicate that he died in the 1940s-50s.
