It's been a long time since I've felt this relaxed in a movie theatre. I felt like I was watching a classic VHS movie I discovered at blockbuster, which is how I saw the original Beetljuice as a kid. It was SO much fun being in that world again. I burst out laughing when Willem Dafoe did his "sneaking around graveyard" to the church. Every "slow" storypoint in the beginning just melted together perfectly by the third act. What a great movie experience. It sure as hell isn't oscar worthy material but damn, if this wasn't a fun time at the theatres, I don't know what is anymore.

I rather think an overabundance of gushing reports from the cast can often be cover for an underwhelming movie. While many liked the film, including me, its not very good. Its got some really serious plot and character problems. Its over stuffed and yet half-baked at the same time. It really needed someone to tighten it up as I think there were elements in there that could have made a terrific movie. My first thought as the credits rolled was: "I waited 36 years for THAT?" Between positive response I was seeing from the general public online and how Michael Keaton raved about it, I was unprepared for how little it met my expectations. Many new characters, none of them fleshed out in the slightest. They were trying to fit in a million things, but didn't devote any time to any of it. I didn't think the ex-wife character or the Willem Dafoe character were really needed. I would've liked to see more meat around the story of Astrid's fake boyfriend and Astrid's father in the afterlife. And I was waiting for one single mention of Otho that never came. Glenn Shadix is a legend and too big a part of the first film to not have been mentioned once. (It would've been great to mention Otho as still alive somewhere, because Shadix actually died in 2010...but Otho just wants nothing to do with the paranormal anymore, lol). And why not a Dick Cavett cameo? He's still kicking. Even would've been fitting for Delia to talk with him at the end of the film, if you know what I mean (not to give anything away). Loved Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara though. Excellent evolution of the two female characters and Keaton picked up right where he left off.
@Adamguy2003Ай бұрын
While I feel you're being too harsh towards the movie, I agree with you that the movie could have done more with Astrid's "Love interest," Jeremy, SPOILERS! particularly showing/ explaining why he killed his parents.
@mrbeast85Ай бұрын
Similar to My thoughts. It seemed to have everything but a strong core plot to drive it forward, leaving the movie lacking heft or stakes. It seemed to spend a lot of time meandering about before any of the threads really kicked in and then what had been a bit of a slow film seemed to be ending very suddenly. The plot about Astrid's boyfriend should probably have been the central story; it had stakes and emotional weight. I loved Willem Defoe's character (he really gives the role his all), but he had so little of consequence to do; ditto Monica Bellucci. If they had tightened up the story, jettisoned bloat like The Soul Train and Charles Deetz's bizarre and repeated appearances, they would have had a really good movie on their hands. As it is I think its riding on the back of nostalgia, Keaton's flawless performance as the titular ghoul and the spooky season mood it ladles on in lashings. I mean what more could you ask for in a film opening the Autumn season, but an upstate New England small town in the Fall setting, filled with Autumnal sun shafting through golden leaves and pumpkins aplenty? Even with the fundamental story telling problems, its very hard to hate the thing.

@@mrbeast85 I thought it was the lamest ending. Stark contrast to the first film, which is one of the BEST endings of all-time. It was more of a musical than a comedy. A little influence from the Broadway show, maybe? The first film had so many great quotable moments and one-liners, from a few different characters. I don't hate it. Keaton, O'Hara, and Ryder prevent me from hating it. But I'm very disappointed. Constant mention of Charles was in poor taste, honestly. We all know why the actor isn't in it. As for the great love of it, I don't think standards are what they used to be. It's also kind of missing a down-to-earth everyday character that sort of fills that void left by Barbara and Adam.

As someone who has seen the original at least 5 or 6 times growing up & def love it. This sequel brought me nothing but laughs & amazing energy! I think it is every bit as fun as the first one while exploring a bigger world as you said. Great movie & just makes me happy for Burton, Keaton, Ryder, & O’Hara & all involved. Really cool thing to see ☺️

I saw the original in theaters when I was in HS and loved it. It holds a special place in my heart. I went and saw the sequel yesterday, on opening day, with low expectations. It was slow for the first 20 or 30 minutes, but after that everything fell into place and I truly enjoyed it. Kudos to Michael Keaton, he may not have played the part in decades but you would never think it. He was fantastic.

Good review. I agree. One of my biggest likes was the costumes, the stop motion, and the real life props. I enjoyed seeing some of the original cast that returned. Ortega has found her home in horror and spooky films. Great edition in the franchise imo. Plot wasn't big but still fun. Glad to eventually add another classic to Halloween watches.

For all those that gave this movie good reviews what movie were you watching I found Beetlejuice very disappointing especially having to wait 36 years for it to come out. I really felt they had a long list of all the things they had to include in the movie they totally forgot to make any sense on how the movie was going to be written I can somewhat under why Jeffrey Jones wasn’t in the movie but that animation that they had on to explain his non appearance was was really stupid. I love it when Geena Davis said she didn’t appear cause Ghosts don’t age If that’s true why did Micheal Keaton who played Beetlejuice aged big time. LOL

Excited to watch this! One thing I’ll never understand is when people say “no one asked for this”. Technically nobody asks for any type of movie to be made or at least for the most part. That’s the fun of seeing things pan out as they do with film. If you say no one asked for this then don’t go see it, just like I do for a lot of movies.
@AmarianeeАй бұрын
Yeah, but that's not actually the case with this one. Fans have been consistently asking for a sequel for 30+ years, and it's been in development hell, with multiple scripts, for almost that entire time - especially when Keaton refused to reprise the role without Burton when the studio tried to move forward without Burton, but weren't going to do it without Keaton. This sequel was _very much_ asked for, by millions of fans.

I find myself really relating to Chris on this one. I've seen Beetlejuice once, in my 20's, and plan on rewatching it before seeing Beetlejuice 2. I thought the first was a decent film, but I don't have that nostalgic love for it like most people. Hopefully I like it, I do like most of the cast and Tim Burton of course. Thanks for the oddly relatable review!

Awesome review, with no spoilers. Perfect. Already excited to see this as I saw the original in the theatre when first released (gawd I'm old) and totally get what you're saying. Still, when all the original cast were very reluctant to do this for decades because they didn't want to mess with the love it had, then come back afterwards and truly love the sequel, we know it's going to be something special.
