While I didn’t like Lydia being easily influenced by Rory I do think it’s believable. Even a smart person when they’re at a vulnerable point can be manipulated, even Rory admits he used her grief to his advantage. I don’t think it undoes her character in the original, I think there’s a lot of subtext how Lydia got from where she did since the original to be analysed. I liked her relationship with Astrid, she’s definitely a better mother than Delia but not perfect either. I love that she was willing to marry Beetlejuice to save Astrid. In the end it’s satisfying she takes back her power and sending Beetlejuice back.

@@Dparish24 I disagree in the first film Lydia is against trying to make profit from the house but in this movie they switch her personality and give it to her daughter. The Lydia I know would have never stand for making profit out of her ability to see ghosts and they also numb her down like we are expected to believe that she can see ghosts but not thru his jerk bf ???
@DrDeadsy42Ай бұрын
@@crow_g1639 But that is the whole point. Lydia has lost her ways and needs to find herself after a tragic loss. She even says that she sold herself out at some point in the movie. This was deliberate.

After thinking about it, I think maybe they were steering it towards the animated version a little bit. There's probably a healthy amount of people who spent more time w/ that version. So instead of being the main opposition, Beetlejuice actually saves the day and punishes the antagonist as well as exposes a leeching predator... granted- it was all self serving but still, it felt closer to the cartoon version to me.

This didn’t work for me on many levels. Love the original. Key takeaways. No memorable lines, the original had many. Too many convoluted plot lines. Jenna’s character’s story didn’t work the resolution was awful. The only positive for me was they nailed the look of the original, but this needed more than just that.

I agree with pretty much all of this. After leaving, one of my first comments was "well, it seems like EVERYONE was having the best time MAKING this movie." We also happened to get the new SNL biopic trailer right before, and made the joke that it was fitting since how much this movie felt like a sketch comedy show. Like it wasn't a cohesive narrative, but a series of vignettes with shoe string connective tissue. The strongest thread was the Deetz women, and Astrid's burgeoning romance, and everything else just felt like non-sequiturs and interruptions to that story. [Spoilers] . . . . . It does feel like Rory's plot wasn't as fully baked but also had become structurally required in a certain capacity. He sets up the finale location, which would probably be the hardest element to change. But he's ostensibly a useful device for where we find Lydia and Astrid in the beginning. He's an active force that could PLAUSIBLY be getting Lydia into a space where she's as frazzled and distant as she starts off the movie. But if anything, we needed less of him sleazing around the Deetz family and more of his capacity as a tv producer. Using his faux-woke (said w/ irony) gaslighting shtick to keep Lydia going as his cash cow. Given how they used it more than once already, I would have honestly preferred Rory's presence be reduced entirely to just phone interactions after the opening and then in the finale. Have the engagement pre-established at the studio. Have the reveal of Charles's death become almost a relief, as it means postponing the wedding Lydia is clearly having reservations about. The reveal that Rory has, without Lydia's input at all, just arranged to do the wedding at the town anyways. This would free up a considerable amount of screen time to expand more fully on other elements while he remains as the negative but fully mortal force a la Otto from the first movie. And I gotta say, I would have preferred a slightly different ending with Monica Bellucci's character as well, but still keep it in this sort of anti-climax (because I really love anti-climax joke endings. Old fan of 8 bit theater). Make her entire quest not be to KILL Beetlejuice, but to serve him divorce papers. Clearly their vows would not have included "until death do us part". And then to wrap up the dangling thread she just TAKES Rory as her new husband and leaves. Astrid can still have her worm moment, but have it take out Willem Dafoe's character instead. Except, SURPRISE! He also had a major starring role as a cowboy! (with ludicrous costume quick change) and he rides the worm off into the sunset.

Something interesting about the death of Astrid's father (minor spoilers): We know from the original film that people who commit suicide become civil servants in the afterlife. Despite being consumed by piranhas, Astrid's dad is working as a clerk for afterlife immigration. Was his death not an accident? Did someone tell him, "you can't take that boat down the river in this weather, it's SUICIDE!" Is any sufficiently foolhardy death deemed suicide by the authorities of the afterlife?
@kylemendoza8860Ай бұрын
Yeah I had that thought. I guess it's being retcon. Because Beetlejuice was murdered. He is a silver servant. Unless He was being punished for being a grave robber in life. Maybe he jumped off the boat on purpose. Who the hell knows lol.

I was surprised about how much I enjoyed this film. Did it have a cohesive plot? No, but I loved that it was just fun and how it paid homage to the original? I do agree that there were more characters than we needed, but I loved the heart of the film which was the family. It was nice seeing Lydia and Delia getting along and I am glad that Lydia and Astrid was able to patch things up again when they finally understood each other. While it was a quick scene, Astrid and Lydia seeing (what’s his name) Richard (the dad) was heartwarming and cute. God, the two musical moments cracked me up. I have no words. Lastly, when watching in theaters, many jokes hit. There were so many laughs in the theater and that is all I wanted.

I was hoping to like this and I ended up liking lol I actually thought that some characters were used well and not enough. I wanted to learn about Delores but we only hear the exposition about how her and Beetlejuice met. Her motivation to kill him didn’t make much sense because she could do whatever she wanted to anyone else so why fixate on him besides their relationship? I wanted to hear more dialogue from everyone except Lydia and Delia (the only one who spoke too much was Rory but I didn’t like his character but that was the point, I think). Comparing to the original, this was more absurd, at times gross but fun. The first one felt a bit scarier but the story focused on Adam and Barbara mostly, I feel like they wanted this to be about Lydia and Astrid with their mother-daughter dynamic.

My big issue was the Jenna Ortega and Monica Belluci's stories feel like two totally separate movies and both feel really rushed. Now I think you may be onto something with dropping Theroux. This might free up more time to explore the other plots and honestly more Monica Bellucci is always a good thing, at least in my book.

Everyone has issues with this movie,but everyone has different ones. I absolutely loved Rory and would not wanted to miss him. He is the actual villain here. He is the reason Lydia lost herself even further after she had lost her husband. I find it funny how you even quote Burton on losing his touch for a while and don‘t see that he reflects exactly that in how he portrays Lydia. He always said in interviews that he identifies a lot with Lydia, so it is more than obvious that he tells his own story through her.

As someone who has played Beetlejuice at a major theme park (Which is why I won’t do 2 shows a night, anymore!) I left the theatre in disbelief, rating it a generous D+. RORY (& Theroux) SUCKED! So hard to look at, & give any legitimate attention to! Keaton’s age really came through, as Beetlejuice wasn’t the looney tune, he was, 36 years ago. (It’s as if they gave him a major chill pill!) So much wrong with this overdue sequel! My friends were laughing the whole time, & I was thinking, “What the F-BLEEP-K?!” (& WTF IS with bleeping Beetlejuice?! DeFoe’s character was lame, just as the whole MacArthur Park sequence. (At least it should have been the more upbeat Donna Summer version!) How am I supposed to believe that Astrid not only crashed through a wooden fence, but she also smashed into a “Sleepy Hollow treehouse”, without so much as a scratch/bruise/concussion?! (TBH… I think the crash should have put her into a coma, & then the flick could have been about getting her back, & considering the poorly fleshed out dead boyfriend/trickster killer guy was about to swap her life for his own, maybe Delia could’ve done that?) BTW… Am I the only one who thinks that we should have Re-met Beetlejuice, still sitting on the afterlife waiting room couch, still with shrunken head, & still holding the service ticket with the enormously long number?! The whole Delores thing wasn’t a terrible idea, but it was terribly played out, & the end of it was…🤦♂️ What about, “the Maitlands found a loophole”? 🤦♂️ Don’t get me wrong. There were some good things about it, but… I just can’t think of any of them, at the moment. BTW… I’m genuinely glad that it has done so well, though I’m not entirely sure as to how, I wouldn’t mind a third & final visit to the Neitherworld. Perhaps calling it, “Beetlejuice 3: Third Time’s the Charm”? 💀🪲🧃🤦♂️

Too many pointless plot points that you just forget about, but my biggest issue is how much time they did spend on the Jeffrey Jones character when they could have done just one scene...maybe, if one...and move on from it and that pretty much ruined my entire experience.
