Jesse (Ethan Hawke) confesses to Celine (Julie Delpy) the loveless state of his marriage and the longing he has felt for her over the years.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Richard Linklater directs the romantic drama Before Sunset, a sequel to Before Sunrise (1995). Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) were strangers who spent a loquacious night together in Vienna. Nine years later, Jesse has written a book about the encounter. During his accelerated European book tour, he reunites with Celine in Paris. Before Jesse's flight home, he joins Celine for a picturesque walk around Paris peppered with intimate conversation: at first, about the minutiae of their day-to-day lives and their relationships, and then about their lingering feelings for one another. Before Sunset was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

This is the most moving scene of the film, finally all the frustrations explodes, Céline confesses first that she put all her romanticism during this one night and Jessie confesses he was dreaming of her constantly even after his marriage, so much passion, love and frustrations and this scene...

Jack Romaine I know it's beautiful but heart breaking. Her instinct is to try and console him by kinda making his dream of touching her a reality but she stops herself because she knows he's married, and the thing that just sticks it in and breaks it off is that he didn't even know she tried to touch him, and you just know that killed her. The fact that she can't even tell him how much she loves him just really hurts. 😢😢😢😢😢😢

I like how it feels like Jesse remembered the conversation in the first film Celine in Before Sunrise: I had worked for this old man and once he told me that he had spent his whole life thinking about his career and his work. And he was 52 and it suddenly struck him that he had never really given anything of himself. His life was for no one and nothing. He was almost crying saying that. Jesse in Before Sunset: I just...I don't wanna be one of those people who are...getting divorced at 52 and falling down into tears admitting that they never really loved their spouse, and they feel that their life has been sucked up into a vacuum cleaner!

That is a callback to the first movie. In a scene in "Before Sunrise" He tells her he can handle not having a fulfilled love life and kids if it means he can be really great at something instead. In response, she tells him the story of this 52-year-old man she knew who did just that, neglected his personal life for work and that he regretted it as an old man

It’s like throughout the movie Jesse was sort weary about what Celine was telling him, in some scenes you can see how hesitant he is believing Celine, almost as if knowing she’s holding some back from him. On the other hand, Celine had this hidden frustration that could almost be classified as passive aggressive in some moments, hearing about how she believes Jesse has truly moved on. They’re walking on tip toes around each other until they can’t keep up with the facade anymore and it all comes to a climax in the car.

In Before Sunrise, Céline talks about an old man she used to work with, who was 52 and suddenly realised his life was for "No one and nothing." In this scene Jesse says "I don't wanna be one of those people who are, getting divorced at 52, and falling down into tears, admitting that they never really loved their spouse, and they feel that their life has been, sucked up into a vacuum cleaner!" Ethan Hawke was 25 making Before Sunrise, each movie is set 9 years apart. If they ever made a fourth movie Jesse would have been 52...

Great acting, great writing, great directing, great EVERYTHING!! Those two nailed it, and nailed it beautifully, seamlessly even. For this scene alone could have allowed both Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy to garner Oscar nods for Best Actor and Actress. Brilliant! And just perfect in all that romantic reflection, all that nostalgic, endearing and philosophical reflecting steeped in this genuine, heartfelt romantic yearning, all that romantic longing. Yes, those two nailed it marvelously, flawlessly, and with this touching beauty and grace. Perfect (the condition of romantic loneliness and yearning that they captured and revealed).

Jesse opening up about his marriage makes me realize that if one day my parents decided to have a divorce, i’m gonna be fine with it, they both deserve to be happy. It’s funny because i always thought divorce is the most selfish thing that a parent could do, I despise married couple who gets divorce because i always think about the child’s situation, i never thought about the parent’s situation, maybe i did but i pushed it out because i empathised to the child so much. I guess Ethan Hawke is just such a great actor to pull off this marriage stuff and have me change my mind about it.😊😊😊

Her guard she put up to protect herself from getting hurt by revealing her feelings for a married man, who she presumed was happily married comes crumbling down as he reveals how he pined for her also and that was also the love he never got over. the weight of all those years spent apart both yearning for one another it all just hit her at once and her expression is magical. yes i was crying. when she reaches out crying 😭

He sais about his son: there is no laughter in there. I don t want him to grow up in that. So what did he do? He left home, moved to Europe and selfishly chased bis own romantic dreams. And romance is just imature love, with no responsability. The result is another broken family, a couple of kids who will grow up without a father. Just becouse he was still not mature enough to take responsability for his actions. He sacrificed his kids for selfish reasons, made new kids and forget about the ones in america. And you can t do that. When you have kids, you don t live for yourself anymore. You created that life, you have full responsability for that. No childish romance should stay in the way of what is right to do. Just take it like a man and do what you have to do. But this is tipical liberal bullshit.
