Lol, it is really interesting to watch people who don't make soap on a daily bases! Of coarse I make soap 2-3 days a week, as I sell mine and need to stay up on stock. Why is it interesting to watch you may ask? Well, first is choice of mold. I do use smaller molds, my smallest being 5# . I would never not line my mold, I don't have to, as I have silicone liners. The extra pieces you most likely toss are samples for me and it's a loss of profit to throw away wood stained soap! The second choice that intrigued me in this soap was how you went about formulating your recipe. I never have old oils, lol! I buy according to my recipe that I formulated specifically for hardness and big bubbles! Love big bubbles in soap! I do have a recipe I use for very moisturizing soap, it has a creamier lather. I never thought of formulating the way you just did, but I understand why you did! Can't have things going to waste! The third is how long you let it sit in the mold! After more than 10 years of making soap, I can't wait to cut into mine! I'm lucky if I hit the 24 hour mark! Usually like 15 hours is about right for me! I guess my other moment in this was seeing no fragrance. If I only got to make only one loaf in probably a month I'd be dying to fragrance it with something, lol! Although I understood you were making it for your Dad. He wanted just plain unfragranced soap. So yeah, that is what intrigued me about this particular video. Thanks Marie, for always making it interesting! Jill Gross

I read your blog yesterday about how soap is actually bad for your skin due to its high pH, and consistent, daily soap use can damage your skin. I had no idea about this! I always thought pure, natural soap was better for you than the ones with synthetic ingredients like sulfates. Now I’m off to buy some soap-free bars. Can we get a recipe/video for one too pls? Glossier actually just came out with 1 called milky jelly cleansing bar, but it’s friggin’ $18!! for 1! I adore Glossier but I have a sneaking suspicion they’re just copying Cetaphil’s gentle line which came out long before Glossier’s milky jelly line.

i would absolutely love to add shea butter or cocoa butter to my soap (at 15%), but read in your old soap-making post that the soap would need to cure for at least a year in order to be good. Is there ANY way, any way at all I could include butter without curing that long ?

Butters don't extend cure time.

Hi! I'm not sure what old post you are thinking of; as Clare says, butters don't extend cure time. If your *only* hard fat was 15% shea butter then you'd likely need a long cure time, but if you combine shea/cocoa with other hardening fats you can easily create a bar that ages up in 3-4 weeks. I've created many different bars that blend shea/cocoa and tallow and they're lovely: www.humblebeeandme.com/white-chocolate-peppermint-christmas-soap/ www.humblebeeandme.com/candlelight-christmas-soap/ www.humblebeeandme.com/rose-soap/ www.humblebeeandme.com/christmas-tree-soap/ www.humblebeeandme.com/sugar-plum-christmas-soap/

@@HumblebeeAndMe yes i misread))) i thought it was because of the butter but no. It only requires a long curing time when used instead of tallow or palm oil (it's in your tallow article)

The tallow that I got smells a bit pungent! What else would you use for hardness instead.

I would be watching out for DOS with this recipe. Your linoleic number was extremely high.

That's what I mention the likely short shelf life and suggest clear alternatives to avoid that for others in both the video (05:50) and the blog post :) "That high-ish safflower oil content ending up pushing up the iodine value for these bars, meaning they probably won’t last as long as a lower iodine bar and will be on the softer side. I’m not super concerned about this for a one-off, not particularly large batch of soap, but I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to replicate my fat blend. I usually use oils like Olive Oil and Rice Bran Oil for the liquidy bits of my soapy fat blends, and they’ve worked very well in my soaps over the years."
