Shore Fishing UK - Smooth Hounds - Here is a very detailed beginners guide to fishing for Smoothounds from the shore in the UK. Shore fishing for these gummy sharks can be so much fun as they put up a great fight. Hearing reports of Smooth Hounds being caught from the shore in North Cornwall and Devon I had to give it a go. It was a long drive and hard nights fishing but it was so worth it!

Another cracking video John, some good Smoothies there. The one with the two traces reminded me of a trip to Oban a couple of years ago aboard Ronnie Campbell's boat after the Skate. A male, of if I remember right, around the 80 lbs mark was caught and tagged ( as are all the Skate on Ronnie boat ). The same fish, confirmed by the tag, was caught again within the hour. This also goes to show, that if the fish are handled correctly, then they suffer no harm, and being hooked doesn't bother them. Looking forward to your next video 🎣🎣👍👍

Fantastic nights fishing John. I get all the excitement from a chair and you get the being there. Had to revisit your dropper rig video (which I thought was well presented) and never used it yet, but will do in the future. I used to catch a lot of flatfish back home, dab and flounder mainly and caught always on an Aberdeen long shank. The longest rag worm I ever had was 3 foot long and had a pair of jet black pincers which would of scared a shark lol. Can't get rag worm over here in Oz, but you should check the methods they use for getting beach worm, thinner than a lug worm too. I also used bronze hooks over steel because I felt they had a better point to the hook but went dull quicker. Still, if you're into sharpening hooks, they could last a tad longer. Now, we have laser cut hooks with great points. Peeler crabs were not that easy to find ( crabs can only mate when they are crackling with a skin growing beneath the shell, or soft) but were considered the best bait. then Rag worm, then Lug worm. squid etc etc and used normal thread to tie the softer baits. Now we have stretchy fishing thread which I just bought a batch of ( wish I had this in the 60's, would've saved some time taking the thread off the hook and line ). some fisherman over here have resorted to not using rod stands and have concreted tubes into the rocks where possible and stick their rods into those. ( Fish won't pull rods into the water ) and have placed them at different lengths on the rocks). Keep those videos coming and I might have something sensible to say on one of them lol. Tight lines mate.
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker 5 жыл бұрын
Nomad - Thanks mate. As always, great comment. Aye, the long shank hooks do present worm baits well, I’ve had some brutish king rag before but never 3ft!! Peelers down here can be found through the year so we’re lucky. I have no real preference of hook except i won’t use stainless. 👍🏻🎣

@@TheFishLocker 3ft is very true. My wife caught the only flatty that day at Amble. I took a photo then but long since gone. I held it over a pencil and it was at least 2 ft to the ground draping another 1 ft over the pencil. I just asked my missus if she remembers the time and she does (only because she was the only one to catch a fish ). Anyways, it would be good to know if I had a record worm. lol. Funny thing was that, as you know, we buy worm by the bag and there was only one worm in that bag which usually had about 8 in it. Either that worm ate the others or the guys who filled the bags had a great sense of humour. haha. Sleep well mate.

Superb video. We've been catching decent smooth hounds up in Morecambe Bay these last couple of months. I agree: fantastic fish in every respect. Had a cracking 12lb starry smooth-hound on lug/squid a couple of weeks ago, so doesn't always have to be peeler up here, thought it's still top bait for many. I like your pulley pennel dropper rig - will be making up some of those before next session. I fish alone at night off rocks too, so ought to get myself a life jacket - yours looks nice and lightweight and not too obtrusive - what make is it? Once again, top job on the video. I can't imagine how you keep up with it on a hectic session like this but it's hugely appreciated.

A different species in the same genus is one of the most popular saltwater sportfishing targets here in Southern Australia. It grows to 25 kg and is both magnificent sport and magnificent eating. They're the most prized target off beaches here and very popular in both the commercial and charter realms too, people will pay up to the equivalent of about 100 pounds a person to target them from charter boats. We dream of sessions like yours, great video!

Great smoothhounds enjoyed watching that. Do think you choice of hook link is a bit light for smoothies tho a sliding penel and floro are a bad combination .try a few tests in your shed putting all the strain on the penel hook as it does not take much to break it after a few fish

Nick Epton - Thanks Nick. I do test my rigs out quite a lot in the workshop and have not had any real trouble with them parting from the pennel. The trouble I was having on the day was trying to land them into pools on the wave and the hooklength rasping the rocks. I will be going heavier next time but I had found heavier hooklengths don’t work as well with the pulley dropper rig. So it’s a bit of 6 and 2 3’s. 🤷🏻‍♂️
